Western brown snake found in cinemaNick Calacouras

Western brown snake on loose for a week

ONE of the world's deadliest snakes caused mayhem after it was found warming itself under a popcorn machine in a Northern Territory cinema - less than a metre from teenage staff.

It took one week to catch the 60cm western brown.

The snake, which staff had thought was harmless, was first seen by a security guard as it made its way up the front ramp of the CMAX cinema in Palmerston. It disappeared through a vent.

Staff believed it was a harmless tree snake. They did not see it again until Friday night - when they discovered it living in the cinema's candy bar.

Manager Andrew Cripps said: "I think the heat from the popcorn machine was an attraction.

"Someone noticed it move, so they went to investigate it.''

Snake catcher Gordon Canning was called in and saw teenage staff members searching for the snake in cupboards.

"I don't think they realised just how deadly this thing was,'' he said.

"They weren't far from it - maybe a metre. It could have been bad.

"If people see a snake, please, hands off.''

Mr Cripps said the staff on duty were of different ages - but one was as young as 14. He did not know how the snake travelled from one side of the building to the other.

"We found a dead rodent the day before, so now we assume the snake and the rodent had words - and the snake won.

"I'd be worried if we had a repeat of this incident.

"It could have been a much different outcome. Brown snakes can be very dangerous.

"We have lizards getting in all the time. They are part and parcel with the Territory, but to have a western brown is a lot more serious.''

Mr Canning captured the snake and released it away from populated areas.

    Oh my!!!
I thought most people in Aust would know the rule of never assume a snake is harmless unless you have your snake identification skills down pat. Better to be wrong and find out its harmless than the other way around. They were very lucky.

Someone told me a story just yesterday...that happened in my town.

A lady drove her SUV through the ride-through carwash. Her car had a spare tire on the back with a cover. The cover blew off in the carwash. When the carwash worker went in to retrieve it, he discovered it was filled with "lots of baby copperheads".

    YIKES!

OK now I will be too scared to take the cover off my spare tyre.

The rodent also wanted to live in the candy bar - I would, too! - but the snake wanted to keep the licorice for himself!!

Apparently last week some woman in south Florida left her sliding glass door open and came home to find a gator in her living room.

I can just see it... sprawled on her couch... flipping channels...

Hahaaha, gators always make me think of Lake Placid and the little old woman who fed the gator until it was enormous.

Yikes and I am worried about bugs getting inside.

I saw golf on TV the other day and they had to stop play while a big gator cruised across the golf course. Funny but I guess it makes for some very nervous golfing. LOL at least you would have a good excuse if your game was off.

I miss Nanci! I email her every now and then to say hi. Her and her boyfriend had broken up sometime back and it was a hard breakup for her. I wish she would come back to the forum though!
I couldn't resist I emailed Nanci to ask how she is and to see if I could talk her into just poping in and saying hi! We will see if she does.

I was thinking about her when they found that croc in a kitchen in Florida. Surely she wishes it was her kitchen!

Warm thoughts to Nanci. I miss her too.
