Another HEP crisis for the compooter-impaired

I'm working on changing over our email addresses due to the move. I've got new addresses set up, contact lists imported, igoogle home pages and tabs designed and ready to roll, even a calendar for the hardworking retiree --- I've been one busy bee.

BUT I can't figger out how to edit a contact in gmail. I'm feeling stupid. I cannot, for the life of me, find "Edit at the top of the page." Anyone know?

    OK, that was question #1.

#2 - how do I set up an email distribution list so that I can send out one whopping big "Yo! We've changed our address!" without an address line 5 miles long and giving away everyone else's email address? I set up a group, but gmail immediately converts that to individual email addresses.

#3 - Anyone remember that discussion way back when about protecting the AmiciVeloci.org domain? Cuz of all your hep, I just called my old phone company and they switched it to a direct bill to my credit card. Piece o' cake. Thanks, all.

#4 - Downloading emails from the old Yahoo accounts? I haven't even started on that problemo yet. Whew! Where's the wine?

Here's a big THANK YOU ahead of time because I know you guys will make this soooo easy.

I love gmail but sometimes it irks me. It IS good for help though! Here's what I found on editing contacts:

I found where the place is to edit by clicking on "contacts" on the side of the page. The link is right under the trash link.

    Editing contacts
To edit or delete a contact, open your Contacts list by clicking Contacts on the left side of any page, and following the appropriate instructions below.

    To edit a contact:

    1. Select the contact in the Contacts list.
    2. Click Edit at the top of the page.
    3. Make your desired changes.
    4. Click Save at the top of the page.

To add a contact to a contact group:

    1. Select the contact in the Contacts list.
    2. Open the Groups drop-down menu.
    3. Under Add to..., select the group you'd like to add the contact to, or select New group to create a new group.

    or

    1. Select the group you'd like to add to.
    2. Enter the contact's name or email address in the Add this to group box at the bottom of the contact list.

To remove a contact from a contact group:

    1. Select the contact in the Contacts list.
    2. Open the Groups drop-down menu.
    3. Under Remove from..., select the group you'd like to remove the contact from.

    To permanently delete a contact:

    1. Select the contact in the Contacts list.
    2. Click Delete Contact at the top of the page.
    3. Click OK.

#1 - Click on your contacts on left side. Once it brings up all your contacts, find the one you want to edit in the middle box and highlight it. On the far left it will bring up all the contact info. The "Edit" button will become available. Have at it. Don't forgit to save

#2 - You can always do a BCC that way no one will see who the other people are and/or have the email that is 5 lines long of just email addresses.

    #4 - Not sure, haven't tried.

HEP is on the Way (I think)

    SK,

#1: If you go to the Contacts section and click on the contact, it should bring up the contact with a link to edit contact information.

#2: You can put the group as a Bcc and put your email in the To part. That way it will just look like it's going to your email address.

#3: Hmmm...don't remember that discussion, but I'm glad it all worked out.

#4: Where's the wine indeed?! As far as downloading your old Yahoo email, what do you want to do with it? Have it reside in your gmail account? Archive it on your hard drive somewhere?

    Hope this helps!

Edit: Uh oh, I see that my typing skills aren't what they used to be.

#4 - had Bubba's fine roast beast aus jus but no wine. Remember, I'm in Boot Camp still. I'm thinking I may fall off the wagon tomorrow with a little beer and BBQ. Hmmm . . ..

Oh yeah, my question -- I was thinking I'd just download our emails to my hard drive and then copy to a CD. I have to say he's much better about deleting than I am but then he doesn't do special projects like jerseys, buffs, etc. I make sure he cooks instead.

Anyone have a better idea about saving those old emails? Mostly I'm afraid of losing two things - email addresses that I didn't get added to the contact list and passwords for online accounts that I may not have in my "secret place".

How on Earth did you get all the way up there? Climb down off that wagon this minute, missy!

It's too far past my bedtime to contemplate your other problems just now.

O'tay! Bubba just said "Baldy's BBQ for dinner tonight." So that means off the wagon with a huge thud.

Argh! For some reason, gmail has now decided that I can just click anyplace on the contact record line and a window will pop up with the contact's info. Only then I can find the edit button. At no point before that does an edit button show up, at the top of the page or otherwise.

Gmail supports pulling e-mail from another account over POP3. If you have POP3 enabled on your Yahoo account then you can go to Settings/Accounts in gmail and Add another mail account and then download your Yahoo mail to Gmail. I am guess you have POP3 on your Yahoo mail because you got it through SBC/AT&T. Otherwise you can forward the e-mail one by one to another mail account like gmail.

I thought POP3 only worked if there is a client program on my computer, such as Outlook Express which I don't use.

    From att/yahoo:
    POP Access and Forwarding
Use AT&T Yahoo! as your permanent email address. Forward to another mail account, or download your AT&T Yahoo! messages to your POP3 mail client.

So, if I set up another email address (for instance, me@gmail.com), I can load the whole kit and kaboodle in one fell swoop to gmail WITHOUT Outlook Express in the middle?

    I'm feeling so ancient . . .

POP3 is a protocol to retrieve e-mail. Its not dependent on what kind of software you use.

SK, POP3 is a protocol that you can use with clients such as Outlook Express or as Parity pointed out, gmail.

    In a word, yes!

You don't necessarily need to have a new gmail address -- I think you can add the Yahoo emails to your gmail account.

Here's what you need to do:

    1. In gmail, click the Settings link
    2. In Settings, click the Accounts link
    3. Click the Add another mail account link in the Get mail from other accounts section.
    4. Enter your yahoo/sbcglobal email address and click the Next Step button.
5A. Enter the username, password for your Yahoo mail account.
5B. If you want to access the email messages on the Yahoo mail account thru a client besides your gmail account, check the box to leave a copy of retrieved messages on the server. If I were you, I'd probably check this box.
5C. I haven't tried the Labels or Archiving options. I think if you want the Yahoo emails to go to a special folder, you can check the box to Label incoming messages and specify a new label called Yahoo Mail or something like that.
    Click the Add Account button.
    6. If you want to send email thru the gmail account with your Yahoo email address, select Yes. Otherwise, select No. Press the Finish button.

I haven't tested this much, so I'm not sure how well it works in obtaining mail from your Yahoo folders.

I'll be interested to see how it goes...
