Sticky Problem!

Need some advice for a sticky problem. At the weekend my boyfriend took part in a 2 day organised ride from Paris to London and everyone had to wear numbers. Unfortunatly they were stick on numbers and now the pockets of his jersey's are all covered in the sticky glue.

Anyone know how I can get the gluey stuff off without damaging the lycra. It's such a mess and it's his team jersey.

Gum and Glue Remover:

A fantastic answer to anything sticky or greasy, Eucalyptus Oil makes short work of hard-to-remove adhesive labels, chewing gum in carpets, glue residue and even tricky bandaids. Simply apply the oil to a cloth and dab generously, soaking the item until the glue or gum lifts.

Use Eucalyptus to remove car registration stickers, children’s stickers from furniture, and labels from jars. Eucalyptus oil naturally dissolves glue and gum bonds without staining or abrasion to most articles (if in doubt, test on a small section first).

Adhesive Tape:

Sponge or soak the dry fabric stain with a suitable laundry pre-soak (spot stain remover) or in a grease solvent or kerosene. Kerosene will make the cloth oily, so if used, must be followed by washing in warm soapy water.


PS...I have two small boys who love putting stickers on their clothes...the washer tends to get them off the clothes well enough...I just make sure I check them before they go into the dryer (duh!)...but I doubt you put jerseys in the dryer...

I have not a clue how to help you mitre - but how was the ride? I read a thread about it on cyclingnews and thought it was a neat idea! I am sorry to hear tho that they used sticky numbers! Obviously a decision made by a man! LOL

Have you tried "Goo"? Do you have it there? It is a kind of citrus-based cleaner that I use to get off the gunk from price tags, etc. You might even want to try Simple Green.

Thanks for the tips girls. The eucalyptus oil option sounds promising. I managed to pick some of the glue off after I soaked it in warm water so the eucalyptus might help with the stubbon stuff.

Yes CorsairMac - it was an excellent ride. They only started planning it in September and was organised by ASO - the guys who do the TdF and everyone I spoke to at the finish said it was a fantastic experience.

It was also to give some of the British motor cycle police some cycle race experience as we're really hoping to have the Tour start in London in the next couple of years.

There's also this stuff called "Goo Gone" that has worked really well for me in the past, but I've never tried it on fabric. Might be worth a look.

Thanks, slinkedog! That's the name I was trying to think of. For gooey stuff, I always turn to critus cleaners.

why do I think freezing it might work? I'm just thinking maybe the glye would 'crack' off then. It usually works with chewing gum. I'm not sure about petrochemical products, as jerseys are usually synthetic and made out of petrochemical by-products, think solvents could penetrate into or damage the fabric. Eucalyptus oil comes from Australia I believe, we used to use it a lot, but I have a feeling you should never leave a quantity of it on some materials, e.g. light plastic, as it may eat through over a bit of time. Still I think that's what I'd try if freezing it did not work.
