How much

Okay, one of my co-workers, who I have been working with for 6 months is getting married at the end of the month. My other co-workers and I( there are 6 of us) are planning on taking him out to eat and getting him and his wife to be a gift certificate to one of the places where they are registered. My question is how much should I put in?? If it matters, we are not invited to the wedding. I j ust don't know. I know it probably doesn't matter, but that is how I am. Hope you all are doing well

Not that I'm the queen of ettiquette here or anything, but if you're taking him out to dinner and getting them a gift cert., would you think that $15/$20 each would be good? Don't know what the budget allows, but that would still allow them to get something nice that they've registered for, but didn't receive.

I was thinking along the lines of $15/$20 but I don't want to look to cheap. In the end I know it won't matter because he is on the "self-centered" side and may not appreciate it the way most people would. Thanks Tri

I'd set an objective goal...like the cost of a place-setting divided evenly. I wouldn't do a gift certificate...make it something they're registered for.

I think taking your work colleague out for a meal is a nice thought. A gift certificate is a nice thought too.

If it was me (and I am quite different), I would think it more than acceptable to receive the gift certificate without being shouted a meal. After all, if he wanted to share a meal with you to celebrate, you would all be invited to the wedding. (I do realise that wedding budgets don't always stretch that far.) What's wrong with the certificate, dedicated to a goal or not ($10 per person), and giving him a special morning tea at work?

After all, it's the thought behind the gesture that counts.

Around my workplace, the going rate seems to be about $20/person. Sometimes the person "in charge" of the gift will buy something, sometimes a gift cert and sometime they just give the cash with a card signed by everyone.
