I've been wearing the Pearl Izumi Gel Lite Race gloves this summer, and they've been doing the job for me -- at least in that area of my hands! I started the season prettty miserable in that part of my hands, so I'm sympathetic to your search for padding.
Some of my occasional discomforts come from where on the bars I hold on, and for how long. I started the season in a pair of Specialized gloves I'd been wearing for a year on my upright comfort bike, and when they didn't seem to do the job, I tried another pair of Specialized gloves, a step up from those. The more I learn on this road bike of mine, though, and the stronger I get, I'm starting to think I'll be using those other gloves again!
(I learned a new thing this morning, trying something I saw the boys on THE TOUR doing: I shifted where on the hoods I hold on, and it was AMAZING what that did for my hands, and even my shoulders!)
We can do a lot with "adapting" our gear to our needs, but if there's one thing I've learned this summer, it's that I have to fix ME as well as adjusting the bike and accessories!
