We were on a twisty rolly section next to a house with a few horses in a field. The big peloton has just passed, and the horses were running around the field in a frenzy. I was in a group of about 20 riders, and i heard what sounded like a flat tire -- phwlap, phwlap, phwlap... I looked around - couldnt see anything. Thought it was a car coming up. Looked back, and suddenly saw a horse! Running along with the riders behind me! They all slowed, but the horse kept coming. I didn't know what to do -- if I slowed to stop, I thought it might run over me - it had a totally wild look in his eyes. So, I kept riding, thinking it would stop -- nope. The phwlap, phwlap, phwlap kept coming. I tried outrunning it - well, that's was just silly. We got to a 'T' intersection, and I thought that surely it would stop. Most of the other riders stayed behind him, but two guys come up beside me and say, "Um, ma'am, we don't mean to startle you, but did you know there was a horse chasing you?" !!!! Sure enough, the horse followed me around the turn. I caught up to another woman and got to deliver the punchline of the day. Usually, you yell "car back" when one is coming up behind you. "Horse back!!!!" We got to a decent downhill section, and I was able to get good distance on him. At the next reststop, the riders behind this said that when we passed another field with horses, this one slowed up and stopped by the fence, and eventually someone said the owner came and got him - assumed that when the big group went by, the horse got so excited that he just jumped his fence.
By the way -- the Wilson 100 was just wonderful! Great route, good food and reststops, and the weather was perfect! I loved the ride this year!
