No, our bikes weren't stolen! I ended up paying a visit to the ER![]()
I've been trying to get rid of a nagging flu like hacking never ending cough for about a week now and since none of the cough meds that I have are doing the job quickly enough, I decided to buy another bottle of cough syrup. I've convalesced for the past 5 days, been off my bike& work.
(I should probably tell you I felt a bit off with some sort of phlegm in my chest about a week before my 200km but let it slide as it wasn't bothering me & didn't bother me on my rides. The weather has changed down here & I probably caught a bit of a chill one morning or on the last 15km of my 200km when the sun went down & became a bit chilly.)
I have some Robitussin & told the pharmacist about that product & she offered me some Rykoden. I have some of this at work but didn't like it as it made me very very drowsy.(zzzzz.fell asleep at my desk at work!) Rykoden contains codiene (will check the sp) which I don't normally think about while taking medication.
So, I took some Rykoden after dinner and was just getting myself ready for work and our swim session otday when I felt really strange. I started shaking, felt woozy, dazed & confused (hee hee.more than normal..), vomited, my mouth went numb along with the left side of my body.I wondered if i'd poisoned us at dinner

Ian came home from walking Yukon & decided that perhaps we should go & visit a dr. I didn't want to bother the folks at the ER but that's all that's open late at night in the Perth region![]()
The Doctor said "You've just experienced the side effects of codiene and you're ok". If that's what codeine does to me, i'll stay far far away!
I'm coolio now & have decided just to let the cough take it's course. I normally don't take medication for flu's etc as they usually go away on thier own.

CC - that sounds scary! Actually, I've been there too, and refuse to take codeine....vomiting for 3 days straight was no fun.![]()
I'm glad you're okay, but sure hope you take it easy until you really are well. I know it's tempting, but please stay off your bike for a bit!

Can you go visit your regular doc? The left side of your body going numb doesn't sound good to me. Were they rushed in the ER?
I'm concerned for you.

Ladies,
Thanks ((((((((hugs)))))))))
I'd no idea that codeine has those side effects! Freaky!!! THis is why i don't take medication if i feel blech, i'd rather just let my body fight it!
Off to wikipedia codeine!
Python-I just noticed your post. I had a few hot toddy's and so much red bush tea with honey that i was getting annoyed and stopped!

Good cure for a chesty cold and cough.
Whisky Toddy
Take two capfuls of Whisky and put in mug.
3/4 fill with boiling water.
Add 1/4 teaspoon sugar.
Add 3 to 4 teaspoons of honey and stir well.
Take the Toddy to bed with you and drink there (very important) because you will sweat...and I mean sweat.
You should sleep well and feel a lot better in the morning. The Whisky tends to blast any phlegm and it also kills germs. The Whisky fumes help to clear the nose. The honey helps to soothe irritated tubes and passageways and eases sore throats.
If I get a heavy cold, it nearly always makes a beeline for my chest. I find that Whisky Toddy really helps. I'm asthmatic too and have found it helps stop me wheezing too much.
I'm Scottish by the way![]()
P.S. It's the only time I will drink Whisky (usually because the cold is so bad I can't taste it). Normally, I loathe the smell and taste of the stuff.

Had you had a hot toddy around the same time, or a bit before you took the meds with codine? If so, the numbness etc. (not sure about the vomiting) is likely related to mixing the codine with alcohol....there is a reason they tell you not to drink alcohol when taking codine... and yah, I know this one from experienceTook a cough medicine with codine a couple of hours before taking some Nyquil (which has alcohol in it) when nothing would stop a caugh....had that numb and dissoriented feeling. That was the only time it happened with taking a medication with codine, so was defenately from mixing it with alcohol.
If this was the case, you might be fine JUST taking the cough medicine.
Zen-The ER was pretty quiet & the DR seemed to treat me like someone who didn't have much to worry about..
I'll make an appt with my dr as i'd planned.
PA-I didn't have a hot toddy yesterday, just tea. Oddly enough I had one ready but didn't take a sip.

Some people do not react well to codeine at all. My dentist gave me some once for a tooth infection I had bad pain with- after one dose i felt so AWFUL, like I wanted to just die! So ill, dizzy and nauseous- sick all over, shaking, terribly drugged, and my heart was racing too. I probably "should" have gone to the emergency clinic, but I didn't want to move....I curled up in bed and toughed it out until it wore off about 8 hours later, but I never ever want to take codeine again.![]()

I went to my dr this afternoon & we discussed what happened. Oddly enough i've had codeine before in Nurofen plus but with no side effects. We're not sure if it was just the codeine or one of the additives in the cough syrup but I can assure you I won't be taking Rykodene again!
We discussed the cough etc & gave me a prescription for something with Roxithromycin. HOpefully this kills the cough!
Thank you for your support ladies. It's nice to have you in my life!
Btw..Zen..you're a cool chickie`

Ah! Sorry ladies. I should have made that clearer.
NEVER mix alcohol with medication. Bad combination. I seldom take medication for anything (strongest the odd aspirin usually for headaches) as I've found that most of the "cold and flu remedies" are a waste of money. Over here most of them contain paracetamol which I've found to be totally useless for me.
Also, don't overdo the Whisky Toddies. I did once. Had a stinking, chesty cold. Took one Toddy, decided I felt a lot better, so had another...and another...by the time I got half way through the fourth one, I was decidedly wobbly-legged and ready to party "C'mon Germs. Let's Party!!!)
I had an evil hangover the next day, but by teatime I was fine and the cold had gone. Definitely wouldn't recommend doing that though.
On a more serious note though, it does seem strange that only the left-hand side was affected. I would have thought a bad reaction to codeine would have affected all of you. Scary![]()

HOLY SMOKES!!!
You scared the jeepers out of me!! WOW- very scary!
But I'm a lot like you. I hate taking stuff. I would rather let nature do it's thing. I'm also allergic to a lot of meds- esp. antibiotics so I'm a bit gun shy when it comes to taking stuff.
People tease me because when I go to the dentist for a procedure that requires novicaine I have to have someone pick me up. I become disorriented and loopy. I certainly wouldn't want to drive afterwards!
Anyhoo, hope you are on the mend. I have quite a box of goodies ready to send you!
