Looking for advice

I am a beginner, somewhat, I have ridden mountain bike/road cruisers all my life and want to try and train for a 35 mile tour but have no clue where to start as far as road/racing bikes go. I would really like advie on what bikes/brands are reliable as I will probably have to look fort a used bike. What would be suggested for training for the above mentioned tour...is 4 months not enough time...thanx for any advice!!
