float: can you have too much?!

    To disable ads, please log-in.

this is a breakoff of the Speedplay pedal thread ...

FLOAT: I use Speedplay X series because of the float, however, it seems like it could be too much float and that is why people like the Zero's -- still have float but not as much.

So, what is the symptoms of too much float? How do you know if you need X series or Zero?

    Thanks!

I have Speedplay Frogs, with "infinite" float.

I don't have any problem with the float, but when I started riding with the Frogs I would accidentally unclip when my pedalling posture got sloppy. It trained me to have better control on the bike.

I suppose if the float was too much for someone's riding style they'd have a hard time keeping their feet/legs steady.

Here's a site that salsabike posted on another thread:

    http://www.cptips.com/knee.htm

it draws a cause/effect relationship between issues (like float) and specific knee maladies.

I have the X-2's on my road bike. I also found the float "trained" me to have better control of my legs/pedal stroke - especially when doing a standing climb. My legs initially felt very sloppy, and got better and more in control over time.
