Good shorts under $60.00

Any suggestions? I'm more then likely gonna order them online but I don't know what to look for or what's a good model. HELP!!

Good... for what? Pleasure riding? Commuting? Riding Centuries? Touring?

I'd definitely recommend that you try to find some higher quality shorts on sale. I.e. brand new they cost $80 but now they're on sale for $60. If you're just looking for something to get you started at $40-50 pair should be fine. However, my personal experience is that it's difficult to get quality shorts for less than $80.

I say $50 b/c my friends have gotten me some shorts but i'm not gonna get them til mid Feb. when they come and visit, so I'm looking to get one now. Well what are good shorts to ride in? For now I'm riding just for pleasure, 5-10 miles, but I do need shorts with great padding b/c the road here in Hawaii are just horrible; we have the worst roads here.

Also, you might want to read some previous posts about shorts (that a lot of women here have contributed to), which you can find under the "apparel" forum. It's located in the "Gear & Accessories" section.

You will find shorts that are made with four panels (four pieces of material sewn together) all the way to ten panels. I could be wrong, but.....I believe that shorts are 'designed to be more comfy' when there are more panels.

I once tried a pair on made with 4 panels which were VERY uncomfortable. The shorts that I really like - they have 8 panels. (More panels = more $$, in the ones that I tried on).

It can be confusing because there are SO many different brands, different types, etc......

Panels do make a difference, but when I'm shorts shopping the first thing I do is turn the shorts inside out to see the chamois. I tend to look for variable padding and channels in a chamois, as well as one that doesn't extend too far up the back. I've found some really good shorts from Trek and Nike for $50-$60.

One thing I'll suggest: When you try on a pair of shorts, crouch down into a riding position to see how they feel and where the chamois fits. Makes a big difference.

I prefer Shebeest shorts, with the Flex chamois. They're a bit out of your price range, but this is a good time to go hunting for internet sales, since in most of the U.S. it's the season for knickers and tights. Speaking of which, the Shebeest Pedal Pusher knickers are nice too.

I've had good luck with the DeMarchi shorts and Adidas Response Race Short. I've gotten both through Nashbar when they are on sale for $40. I've done up to 3hr rides in both and haven't had any problems. Look around, there are some good sales right now on expensive shorts that are last years models. Your LBS may have some left over also. Good luck finding some that work!

I put in a second "vote" for the PI Sugar Knicker and shorts. I like wearing the shorts, because my tan lines are higher in the summer!

The Sugar line is just the right price, made of soft material and has a THICK chamios to protect your bum from pain!

I've found the PI short attack shorts or the sugar shorts to be very comfortable and durable. When you purchase them at a bike shop they are usually over 60.00. You can find them for less online...Performance or Nashbar. I try to stock up when I find them on sale.

My favorite short is the shebeest SSS short which TE has on sale for just your price today. I like them more than the more expensive elite distance 2. I like them so much I ordered 2 on sale from TE today (and of course a sale jersey too!). I hadn't treated myself to any new bike clothes for a while.

My favorite pair are my Terry shorts. I rode over 240 miles on very bumpy fire roads and NEVER had one problem with them. But shorts are such a personal thing. We have all asked your same ? if you do a search you will see how many times it has been brought up and how often it has been said it is a personal thing.
You just have to hope you choose what is right for you and what you want out of them. I have a pair that is ok for short trips but kills me on long one's. just a roll of the dice if you are new at this.

I tend to prefer my sugoi or she beest shorts. My terry's are my back up and my canari's are for when everything else is in the wash. I just picked up two more pair of Shebeest today.
