Skewer Swap?

I just set up my mag trainer (I had to ditch the wind trainer b/c of noise), and my regular skewer fits in the mount just fine. Is there any reason to swap out the skewer if this is the case?

I think people use cheapo rear skewers on trainers because nice skewers can get scratched up by being used in the trainers. I'm not sure if this is caused by mounting/dismounting, or from the pressure of riding on the trainer.

After I sold my old road bike, I found out that I accidentally had left my trainer skewer on that bike -- oops!

I use a Shimano skewer off my old bike because my American Classic and Campy Record skewers won't fit in the mount.

I haven't noticed any scratches on the skewer from the mount.

That's what I've always heard, too. DH, a.k.a. "Bike Boy," dictates that on our trainer bikes' rear wheels we use only the cheapo steel Shimano skewers with slight angle and the small head on the locking side and angled steel nut on the drive side. We also use old wheels and old (smooth tread 25 cm) tandem tires. Less noise, plus it makes no sense to mess up the good stuff!

How is it hard on the skewer? I'm not concerned about scratches - I've laid 'er down on the pavement before , so any nick from the trainer would just add more "character".

Trainer just beats up the skewer, especially if alu, which is relatively soft. If that's not an issue for you, then let 'er rip!
