You might be better off narrowing down what kind of shoe you want before trying to buy them online. First off, you need to determine what kind of pedal system you want to use as that will limit your shoe selection to some degree. Not all pedals work with all shoes. There are pros and cons to just about every pedal system. A lot of people like SPDs because they have a recessed cleat and the shoes can be easier to walk around in. I, personally, prefer a road shoe with an unrecessed cleat. It's all about personal preference.
Second, not all bike shoes fit the same way. Some run pretty narrow in the toe box and if you have a wide foot, you may want a specific brand over another. I've noticed, too, that my heels slips with several brands. Sizing is also an issue, as you also often have to go up a size or two from your street shoes. Another thing to keep in mind is that many of the brands use European sizing.
If you have local bike shops in your area, I would suggest that you go there first to try some things on. Once you start to narrow it down, then you can restart your search for a used pair.
