What is 'historical stuff'...books, dvds? A gift card for movies. Or a good fleecy jacket/vest for chilly rounds of golf. Magazine subscription.
As for my father in last few years, it's been a cheque. Really, he appreciates it. It's not as crass as some folks would think if one knew the low wages he used to earn. He and mother just rely on typical pension that govn't gives to low income earner. His employers never offered an additional private pension. Restaurants usually never do.
For a lark, I have bought a lottery ticket or 2 in past. Since he used to buy cheapo lottery tickets occasionally.

. Maybe you can do the calendar and a gift certificate to a restaurant in their area. If you call, you might be able to pay over the phone and have them mail it.
