Is anyone from Michigan doing this? Would be nice to meet other TE'ers.

just curious - what does "middle of the mitten" refer to?

Coming from a country that can get quite cold I immediately thought of what you do when you have to stand still somewhere in the cold - huddle right in the middle of your clothes

And since your hands get the coldest, "middle of the mitten" was pretty concise.

The lower part of the state of Michigan is shaped like a mitten. American elementary school children always recognize it on a map. I even did, and I grew up in Florida. The ride is just about exactly in the middle if the state, in Midland, appropriately named! Michiganders will hold up their hand and point to a spot on it to show other people where they're from. I have even done that, after living here 22 years!

PS- I don't think it gets as cold in Michigan as it does in Norway-isn't part of that country within the arctic Circle? I like to complain about it though, especially the extended periods of gray. Nothing but gray. For months. After all, I am still a native Floridian!

Parts of inland Norway can get very cold, but for the most part we're blessed with the Gulf Stream giving us much more temperate weather than at the same latitude for instance in Canada. Oslo has long periods of winter weather just around or just below freezing, and can have weeks of rain too.

    Thanks for the mitten image

You're like DBF. He constantly complains about Cleveland's weather. He's spent his entire life in either Arizona or Florida. I tell him to suck it up--it could be winter!
