What helmet are you wearing and do you like it? I left my helmet at a race a while back and have been making due with my kayak helmet while searching for a new one. I am picky and do not like anything- too big, looks like a mushroom, does not fit right so on and so on. Help! I need a great helmet with lots of vents and looks good, fits great. And not 180$

i have a Limar. i love it. it was a little spendy(100.00), but it fits my head right and keeps me safe. my ex-boyfriend is a huge road racer/track racer and he picked it out. i knew nothing about helmets, i tried a lot of them on and this one was the best.

I'm on my third Giro Gila. Sadly, they don't seem to make that model anymore, but you can find them at Performance and Nashbar on clearance sale. I'm thinking the Havoc might be a good choice also.

My LBS told me that $70 to $100 is the best range of helmets. Above $100 you pay for more vents and better styling, below $70 you find the bargain basement stuff for weekend warriors.

I have a small head, and Giro is the only brand that fits me well. They definitely have better venting than Bells.

I too wear a Giro Gila, but different models fit different shaped heads. Bell makes xcellent helmets too, I've wrecked several and been most satisfied- I'm not dead or a vegetable.
I'd go to a good shop and get fitted. If you think it's ugly or uncomfy go elsewhere, 'cause if you're gonna wear it you should think it looks sharp. Do not put up with a minimum wage moron fitting your helmet, you deserve somebody good. About $70 bucks is right, although some shops are totally overpriced. Seems pricey, until you live through your own death and realize how cheap you get off with a good helmet.
Fit is crucial- I went over the bars in a helmet that had too much space on the sides and concussed pretty badly from my head moving inside the thing. The next crash I went OTB in a Bell Pheonix and landed on the top of my skull on a steel railroad track. I got up and walked away with a black eye. The thing fit my skull shape correctly and did its job. I'd buy a major brand, Bell. Giro, but let the fit determine the model.
It's just like buying any other kind of clothes. And being picky is fine, so am I.

I'm on my second Giro--my current one is a Havoc. I got it mainly because the other one was pretty beat up, and the Havoc was fit me beautifully, has a built-in visor, is a nice green color, and was on sale too. Very comfy and cool-looking too.

I bought a Giro Gila. Now my poor pink protec (yes pink)will have to wait until I go kayaking.
