For those who missed it last week: “Don’t Buy Any Food You’ve Ever Seen Advertised”

Michael Pollen said in the beginning of that video that the H1N1 virus came from a large pork operation in Mexico, but that's not true. I read in Newsweek that the ground zero for this strain has not been found, and that the little boy they singled out in Mexico is not the first patient. That it was occurring simultaneously in different parts of the world.

That is probably not germane to his topic, but I wanted to point that out.

"Ground zero" for this particular strain might be unverified due to a lack of surveillance of the farms in question, but the general evolution of zoonotic viruses and the high risk of CAFOs isn't in dispute.

i never thought of it that way before.
Some of the crap you see advertised is horrendous.The first thing that comes to mind is that bagel with cream cheese filling.

As an addendum to :"offshoring" food production outside of one's own country:

In the past few months, it just bothers me to see 'fresh snow peas' from China at the market. It is super hard to believe that this fresh green produce has not been already grown/treated with a chemical so that it survives the flight to Vancouver, B.C. Before in past years, I did see all fresh snow peas labelled from British Columbia.

And snow peas are not super hard to grow in temperate climates in North America. It is grown locally across Canada and we have greenhouses to grow it easily here in the winter.
