Any riders in Bend?

Heya girls. I was talking to a co-worker today who lives in Bend. She apparently was having wine with some friends the other day and somehow while her defenses were down they talked her into signing up for Cycle OR 2008!
N E way, she asked me about any good "books" or references that she could look into for help in getting ready to ride it.
Any suggestions? Do any of you gals live down in that area?


Along that line, there's another gal in Redmond who just started with us who moved here from New Mexico. She's mostly a mtn. biker but revealed that she's in the market for a new road bike. Probably in the $1000 price range. She doesn't know ANYBODY down in that area so she'd really appreciate getting any help from anyone with her shopping. Don't ya just love spending other people's money????
I gave both her and the other friend this website info but thought I might see if there were any kind souls who would like to see about helping them out.

I have to post something because everyone will say "SK!" But I'm overloaded right now. We just moved here and we're still living out of boxes and have to go back to California and Utah to see elderly parents and clean out mini-storage in Calif and . . . .and . . .and. Ooh, my head's starting to hurt. I'd help but I have to be honest about what I can do.

I know there are folks who have ridden Cycle Oregon that post over on bikejournal.com. She could try there. Does she cycle already?

As far as finding a roadbike, I think I'd try Sunnyside and Hutch's for the widest selection. Pine Mountain has great staff but only a small cycle section. Dan McGarigle, the owner, knows bikes but I haven't a clue about the rest of the staff (other than that they know backcountry nordic skis). Bend Bike n' Sport is under new owners and is probably a good bet also.

Once I get my training plan going for the year I'll probably post some rides and maybe they can join. We mtn, road and cross so a little of everything.

I wish I could help. I really do. But the calendar is booked from here until what looks like eternity.

SK-not to worry!!! It's perfectly understandable. I think we're all feeling the "spring chore crunch" and then you have all that other stuff loaded on top!!!
Actually, the info that you provided is really helpful, so see, you did in fact help. I'll pass all of that stuff along.
The gal who is doing Cycle OR does in fact already ride but I believe she was really more of a weekend warrior (nothing wrong with that!!!) and then she had a kid...and...and...and.....
She was just lamenting to me today that she "hates spinning" and so I calmly stared into her eyes and said "repeat after me....spinning is my friend.....spinning is my friend.....I have gears and I must learn to use them...." She'll be fine. I'll just load her up with a batch of CYA (Echidna's (TE member and employee) own personal chamois cream) and try to meet up with her on some weekends between now and then to do some rides.
My other friend (local) and I are signed up for the Summit to Surf ride (from Welches up to Timberline and down to Hood River) at the end of July so we might get the Bend gal to join us for that one. Yeah Team Pear Bottom!!! "You're not the Bosc of me!!"

Oh, I feel your pain. Our new bedroom furniture was delivered yesterday and now the boxes have exploded all over the place. They were being good little boxes before. Stacked up nice and neat with Bubba's winter essentials perched a top. Now, they've run amuck.
