first go at cross - mechanical probs but loved it!

So at the weekend having never been into mountain biking and being a roadie I had my girst go at cross this weekend on my trusty surly crosscheck. I olved it and had overtaken 3 of the other women in the field when my brakes stuck and that was the end of the race for me - but I will definately be back for more!
Any advice on avoding brake problems?
