Doing a long run with little build-up

I'm just getting into biking and the farthest I've gone is about about 12 miles. I want to try and do a 37 mile loop this weekend (the shortest option in a century), but I've read that one shouldn't increase mileage like that. I'm a 55 yo jogger in reasonable shape- and there are rest stops along the route. Am I crazy to try this or do you think I could do it??!! Because it's a century there will be help along the route.

Thanks in advance for your input!!

Sorry- the title should have been "long ride!"

I think you could do it, since you jog. I'd say know the route and where the stops are, so you can pace yourself with the rest stops. Don't skip one unless you are sure you can make it to the next one. If you don't finish, you don't finish. No shame in trying. You're probably going to go farther than 12 miles, anyway, and that will be an accomplishment.

If you have someone to ride with you, it will be easier. I think if you are going to get sore or whatever, you will feel it in your seat and in your arms or hands because they're not used to the distance, but maybe not. It may just be general fatigue.

Previous to doing the Big Dam Bridge fun ride (25 miles), I had only done 15 on one stretch. Hubby had only done about 7 miles, but he hung in there and did the whole 25. It wasn't bad.

This might be a late reply... but you can do it.

If you are a runner... adding mileage to your cycling routine will be easy. Just stop when you need to and rest. The 37 miles will fly by.

Thanks for the encouragement. The ride is next weekend- 5/27 (I was already thinking this weekend was over when I posted!), so the advice is appreciated.

Welp, I'd try to get out and do 15 or 20 some time this week - it should give you an idea of what an increase in mileage will feel like. LIke the others, though, I think it won't be a problem. You are probably pretty good at pacing yourself.
