That's a fair amount of climbing for that mileage!

Hi Veronica,
but who's talking? you are averaging 15,000/236=63.5 ft of climb per mile
and moi is averaging 10,000/150=66.6 ft of climb per mile.
SOOO YOU ARE DOING FAIR AMOUNT OF CLIMB YOURSELF... ;) ;)
Anyway, it will be a while before I can get my milage to 250 miles/month.
just crazy about hill climbs,

OK, my goal was originally 500 miles, but I have never ridden that much in one month especially in January. Right now it looks like I will end up a little over 200 miles all but 70 outside. Which is 86 miles better then I have ever done.
Ok, now I have a rant I get so sick of seeing all the miles you warm state people always get. I live in the snow belt of Ohio, which means either bitter cold or snow on the road, sometimes both. The last half of December, January, February, most of March and even into April. Just glad I don't live in Minnesota or Alaska. I guess it just angers me how unfair it is for northern states to be compared with warm states on places like bike journal:mad:. I would love to see you warm state girls come out and take a spin with me and my friends in January, you'd freeze to death in the first half hour;), and people claim the Belgians are hardy:). So when I get 8-12 miles outside almost every day I'm pretty happy. Long rides of 2 or more hours could be life threatening on some days, with ice, cold, and snow. Oh yeah go inside and after a hour your board to tears. We can't help to get the miles you do.
Who's comparing? I only really compare my stats to my stats. Yeah, I'll go look at what other people are doing. But they are not living my life.
I wish had time to ride both days on the weekend, but most of the time we have some chores to do.
I wish I could ride more during the week, like self employed people do... but that's not my life.
I wish I had a longer commute and a place to shower at work. But I don't.
My monthly goal is to ride more than I did last year for that month. It takes into account weather and other things, like when I have conferences or I'm off, because those things happen pretty much at the same time.
You could move. ;)

Just ignore 'em. There is also the assumption that everyone is a roadie not understanding that one dirt mile can be as hard or harder than one road mile.
It's all about you and your goals, not someone else needing to compare themselves to a total stranger to feel like they've accomplished something.
Well its not just mtn biker, road biker...
I do not race at the moment. Do not have a license. But its not even that at all. If you want to compare milage compare yourself to those in similar situation to yours. To compare to something you are not is.., well not very good. Like apples and oranges.
Yes racer type rodies log a lot of mile no doubt about it. To be competive, we used to say ride minimum of 200-250 miles a week. But many here are not. Many are just out for the exercise, the love of riding and the sense of freedom bike offers. Some of us are commuters. Some racers do not commute on a bicycle at all.
THEN!!! look at someon like Fredwina and he Randonrunner (sp) people. Racers are totally outclassed for distance and endurance by people like Fredwina. Comparing Fredwina to me is like the hare and the tortise. Sure on a short stretch I might out ride her but she'll be pedalling along when I'm exhausted and slumped over on a bush hours earlier.
Veronica compared me to her because we were up to similar sort of thing. roadie and climbing. Otherwise no comparison. Far as my 150 miles are concerned, that is just my goal. I find it very interesting that Brandy is riding over 500 miles this month. She lives not too far from me yet I harbor no sense of inferiority just because she is riding four times as much. Its great that she can ride 500 miles, do the agony ride, and climb nearly 4000 feet in 30 some odd miles. It isn't for me though. Her posting is an incentive for me. Just as Veronica's and Fredwina's post. I'm inspired by their feat. ;)
I think we need to see the personal achivements and goals of others as an incentive and inspiration for what we want to do. It isn't about competing to see who is riding faster, climbing more, or riding farther, or riding in heat or cold. Besides after years of competition, you WILL always find someone faster than you, can rider farther than you...
Sincerely,
Smilingcat
Well said smilingcat ! :)
CR400, I'm sorry that you can't get out & ride as much as you'd like, I do feel for you! It must be so frustrating. In the meantime I hope you ski or do other fun things in the wintertime.
I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say no way would I compare my mileage to anyone else's, much less anyone who lives in the land of ice & snow.
There are people who somehow, someway, lord knows how, manage to rack up mass quantities of miles despite the nasty weather where they live. They are superhuman and/or crazy :D - but no matter, they leave me awestruck.
But that's certainly no negative reflection on those who cannot, or choose not to, bike under difficult or potentially dangerous conditions.
Springtime will come for you, sooner or later. Hang in there.
Some good riding here ladies
Well done
:)
I had an approximate goal for January of 547km on the road as that is what I did in Jan 2007. I am 46kms away from that with a week or so to achieve it. So am on track and feeling good about that
:)
Sorry Ladies,
I tend to be way to competitive with people. But I am actually happy with my now 200+ miles. And we are getting a warm up so I will be able to go outside if I don't have to work, and maybe hit that 300 for January.
I've fallen short of my goal this month, oh well. Got bogged down with papers for school and then I went out Wed. and flatted about 8 miles into my ride without a tube(AHH bad me!!), and had to be picked up, and then Thursday flatted towards the end of the first part of the ride(did a group ride and was going to put in an extra 1.5 hours after it) but after changing the flat, I realized there was a hole forming in the tire and the tube was popping through  so I rode home. So all in all I fell about 4 hours short this week, which is putting me about a 90 miles short for the month. Oh well, I still made it over 800 so far with a few more days to go. I should hit about 950-1000 for the month still.
Smilingcat- that was a great post you wrote! I loved reading it. You are dead on with what you said.
I hadn't thought about my goal in monthly terms until today.
Today, I exceeded 100 miles for January...pretty good given weather issues. So, Feb goal is 100.
March is 250. For April through August, 400/mo is reasonable. This will get me past my goal of 2,500 miles, so I guess my goal is too low.
So, at this point, if I don't exceed my annual goal by 1,000 miles, I guess I should be disappointed:o:(
I hit my goal of 500 and still have a few days to go. Most of these miles are trainer miles given the winter temps and the fact that I'm a weather wimp. If the weather holds tomorrow I'll ride after school and maybe break 100 road miles for the month. I'm off to a good start!
I fell short of my goal by 98 miles.
I've put an entry on our website about the month's training and how it went.
