    Wow, Moving sucks!

    To disable ads, please log-in.

So I'm sitting here just decompressing with a glass of wine. I'm so tired, I was ready for bed an hour ago, but I'm too amped up to go to bed just yet. I've just driven a uhaul from SF to LA. I've taken a whole week to move, but I did the move completely solo, so I am dead! Anyway, now that I am moving down to (OC not LA actually), anyone know of some good riding groups or whatever down that way, (dana point, san clemente, mission viejo, laguna ish area)???

Can't help with the riding groups, but can comiserate with you about the moving. Doing that ourselves from a townhouse we are renting to a house we bought. Did the major moving this weekend (actually on Friday) with some help. Two of hubby's co-workers came to help. Right now I'm waiting for the satelitte guy to show up to hook up the dish for TV. He was supposed to be here yesterday, but they sent him to the wrong address so had to reschedule it for today. UGH!

Hope you find some folks to share cycling. I haven't gotten around this yet.

I also just moved last weekend. Just today was the first time I washed the floors in my new place. I don't have alot of possessions here (vs. Vancouver) so we could walk or bike over about 50% of my stuff...3 blocks between old place and new place.

Then biking around town ...to get more stuff.

I had problems getting someone to help dearie move 2-3 pieces of furniture since I work full-time and already sucked up time away from job for this. In the end, he enlisted a nearby truck driver, janitor, etc. to help him on the fly.

It would be hard to move everything on your own particularily if you have alot of stuff.

    I whole-heartedly agree.

I'm T-minus 1 week from my 500 mile move west and I'm dreading it. I've got a 3/2 (1200 sq ft) now and I'm going to a 1/1 (730 sq ft). I've already donated a lot of it and I'm finding more all the time that I am able to easily part with... but I'm still left with a lot after that.

Luckily, I hired a company to come in a move everything. I'm packing everything up, but there will be two youthful young fellows to haul it the 500 miles and then up three flights of stairs. My dad is getting too old for this kind of thing, although he is at least coming with me to supervise and hang pictures.

I wish you luck, E-V, in finding a riding group. If I ever get over this sickness I'll be in the market for one soon too!!

I certainly don't know anything about riding in that part of California, but maybe check out meetup.com. I found a road group and a mountain bike group on there when I moved here.

And I loathe moving too. My goodness. The next time I move had better be the last.

Moving does suck! We moved from a large house with huge garage, shed, etc. to a small apartment last June, a major undertaking involving selling and donating lots and lots of stuff. We did the majority of the move over one weekend all by ourselves, up three flights of stairs at the new place, in upper 90-degree heat. Misery!

Late this summer we are moving to Belize - an even larger undertaking in some ways b/c of the logistics of moving out of the country (with a dog) and having to get rid of everything, other than a few important things (like our Bike Fridays!!) that we'll store at my mom's.

Emily, I don't want to even fathom that. I'm having enough difficulty moving myself back to my parents' house (and DBF's heading back to Arizona). That's supposed to be Saturday. We're still packing. We did get rid of the couch today (it found a home). Internet goes on Wednesday, gas and electricity go Friday.

I must be a homebody at heart vs. a vagabond. I don't have alot of stuff in the latest move that we just did almost 2 wks. ago.

I moved 6 months ago from 1 province to another.

But right now, I'm highly demotivated to finish unpacking more odds'n ends, including more of my clothing. After working full-time during the biz week, it's just harder to get energized. I'm dealing with a brand new dryer that doesn't work, etc. It's these malfunctioning things plus other stuff...

I'm probably not being kind to myself because I've had to sustain a tremendous amount psychologically during these 2 home moves over last 6 months....death of sister, my partner now living in another province with our visits to one another, developing another blog for yet another organization, new job, new city, new faces..

I never thought at 52 I would be experiencing such significant upheaval.
Here's a throwaway story: when I moved from Toronto to vancouver, I truly had to discard some major stuff. I ended up discarding a large table size piece of stained glass art that I made.

Right now, I've hauled over a wad of art supplies but...I realize I don't have a proper cabinet/place to store all this stuff. I brought it over since I have too much of these supplies in Vancouver. Does that make sense?

Realize that I don't even have a couch yet nor coffee table. That is how bare I am ..in my new place which I like alot.

Yea, my life is in disarray for awhile.

I totally feel your pain. My husband and I both retired and made the final move to Georgia. When I tell you EVERYTHING went wrong, I mean it. Finally get here sleep, feel halfway human start unpacking and the apple laptop is nowhere. We have flipped this house upside down, it's just gone. Yup, moving sucks!

I should be packing instead of typing this message. Feel everyone's pain.

I'm starting to get things together today. Gotta put stuff into storage then do it all again in January, yuk!

As for finding riding buddies I assume you can google local cycling and maybe find something or stop by a local bike shop and ask them.

I'm in the middle of packing myself...moving in less than two weeks! I will be glad when the whole process is done and I am settled in the new place--kind of stressed out right now.

Wow, I've moved 7 times since I've been married (31 years), including one across the country move. The last 4 were done by professionals, but we always do our own packing. We make a checklist and then get to work. First comes selling stuff, if necessary, or taking it to the dump or Goodwill. That is done months, or at least a month in advance, which sometimes means doing without things you need for awhile. Then, everything that doesn't get used frequently gets packed, such as china, things in the dining room and kitchen, and tools, outdoor stuff. DH can wrap and pack dishes and glasses super fast. We've gone to U Haul to get boxes in our last 2 moves. We make a map of the new house on the computer and use it to help the movers put everything in the right place. Boxes are labelled with the location they are to go in the new house... not where they came from. This was really important for my last move, as the configuration of the house I am in is quite different. The last 2 moves were local, from one town to another, about 15 and 9 miles. I took all of the clothes in our closet and other valuables, including our bikes in the car. That took a few trips. The clothes get hung and put in the appropriate closets before the move.
When the movers arrive, they have been instructed to unload the kitchen boxes first. I start unwrapping and unpacking while they are still unloading the truck. The kitchen is done and put away by the time I go to bed. It really helps in waking up the next morning, to know your stuff is where you need it when you get up for breakfast. The other stuff can wait, but generally, we are done unpacking in a week or less.
I never had lived in a house with a basement until my last move. We had to dump a lot of stuff, even though I was going to a bigger house. The next one will be worse, because we will be downsizing, but even though it's not going to be for 5-8 years, we've already started discussing what's going to go, what's going to be donated, and what's going to a kid. The key for us has been to never accumulate any junk and throw out stuff that doesn't get used on a regular basis.

Chiseling away at it, but even though I just moved a year ago, and tried hard not to unpack much, I still feel overwhelmed with the whole process.

Totally know and understand where you're coming from. Just did the same thing myself. At least this time I didn't have to sell a house also.
