Metropolitan Branch Trail: Silver Spring to DC

Nope, this isn't to plan a ride. I just read about the Metropolitan Branch Trail in the latest Rails to Trails magazine. The trail will be 8.25 miles and run from Silver Spring to Union Station in D.C. Apparently, "current projections have the Met Branch complete by year's end."

For those of you in Silver Spring, this is pretty cool!
"How about if we all just try to follow these very simple rules of the road? Drive like the person ahead on the bike is your son/daughter. Ride like the cars are ambulances carrying your loved ones to the emergency room. This should cover everything, unless you are a complete sociopath."
David Desautels, in a letter to velonews.com

Random babblings and some stuff to look at.

I hope this is true. They've been promising this trail for years, with no progress. It would be fun to be able to do a loop from home to DC on the Metropolitan Branch Trail, up to Bethesda on Capital Crescent Trail, over to Silver Spring on the Georgetown Branch Trail, then back home on Sligo Creek Trail.

Yep, it's been in development for years and years. It would have really helped on my commute from Mount Rainier to Alexandria for three years. But I moved to Alexandria, and so I haven't kept up with the trail developments. If you ride the Red Line between Brookland and New York Avenue, look down on the right, you'll see where the trail is supposed to go, at least that part of it.

Even though I don't live in that area anymore, and I'm now going to move to Richmond (so that I can afford to buy bikes and not spend all my money on housing in this region), I'm still interested in seeing that trail completed. If Fenty latches on to it (he's from NE, right?), he'll get it done.

I rode the newly opened section of the Metropolitan Branch Trail today. It was nice, and very well marked.

I got on at the NY Ave metro station and rode home. Much of it is on the street still, but when it's all done it will be great.
