You could probably do shorter rides with tri shorts. There are some gals here who wear only tri shorts, as they have comfort issues with traditional chamois. I have a pair of PI tri shorts that I like, so far. I haven't worn them for more than 12 miles at a crack, yet, but they felt pretty nice. My sit bones are pretty tough, now, though. I'm not sure I would have liked tri shorts when I first started riding...my sit bones needed all the padding they could get, at first.
I guess the best way to find out is to try it out. No?
I think my seat bones might take it just fine too for I do Spin in running shorts and there is no soreness that I can tell after one hour.
