Well, I own three. My Bacchetta Aero 24, my Trek Fuel, and my tandem trike. Some of the folks on bentrideronline.com own a stable of bikes. I just don't get it, you can't ride them all at once!
But I have to admit, I have my eye on Lightning P-38. I took one for a test ride the other day, and oh my, what a fun ride!!

The most comfortable recumbent you will ever ride, and boy, it climbs hills extremely well!
You can't ride a skinny tire road bike on a dirt road.
And you can't ride a Tuesday bike on a Wednesday ;)

Two...and for now that is enough. Eventually though I will probably get a mountain bike but that will be a few years.
I have 2, both the same maker, but different materials. I'm set for a while, but I think I'd be in trouble if I test rode a Moots.
I have 4:
2 road- the first generation was a second hand C-dale purchased from a friend which has been upgraded to a C-dale SuperSix.
2 mountain-a 26 inch wheel Titus and a 29 inch wheel Salsa.
Most people that mt bike a lot, or race have 2. My DH just cracked his frame and it tokk 5 weeks to replace. He missed 2 races because he does not have a back up any longer. Needless to say, we will be getting a second bike for him sometime soon.
I have three, but they are spread out at two different houses. That's how I justify it. I ride the steel single speed in Georgia on the farm roads and here in Miami I have the carbon hotness for tri's and the hardtail mountain bike with slicks for the trainer or whatever. I did eye a hot tri bike...hhhhmmmmm!

My old 1997 Trek 730 that is still in excellent condition. I'm keeping her because I love the steel frame.
My new 2010 Specialized Vita Comp. Still getting used to her.

A hybrid outfitted with studded snow tires
A cheap bike attached to the trainer.
So, that would be 5 in active circulation...but I will have to consider the concept of a Wed. bike....
Technically I have 2...my beloved Cdale road bike and a POS Schwinn mtn. bike that I haven't used in years. It's way too big for me (I was fit by some teenage boy at the shop and didn't have a clue what I needed, either) and was never comfy...weighs a ton. So I'm not sure I even count that one.

hmmm... I think according to the bike owning laws of Zen I'm due for more;).
i've got:
- road bike
- mixte
- xtracycle (aka my minivan)
- cross bike
- the rear half of a tandem
- my husband's old road bike which resides at the in-laws' cottage in michigan (which will hopefully be replaced this summer by a cross bike instead because of exactly what Zen said earlier in the thread about skinny tired bikes and dirt roads - i want to expand my riding options up there!)
i feel like i've got pretty much all my options covered, but it doesn't stop me from coveting other bikes. i'd especially love to add one with s&s couplers.

but I also have two single speeds that I've 'taken over' that really belong to my sweetie... they are all adjusted to me and he doesn't ride them but they aren't technically mine :p
I've got 3. Two road bikes (Trek) and a hybrid (Giant). But I pretty much only ride my Trek Madone these days. The hybrid is good on trails, but don't seem to have the time for that.

a road bike and a mountain bike that currently has road tires on. we get a lot of rain here for 8 months out of the year so I use the mtn bike for wet weather and groceries, errands, camping. Fenders on both bikes. No one likes a dirt/rain stripe up their butt. :rolleyes:
I have two bikes. My Rivendell Rambouillet steel road/touring bike, and my custom steel Luna road bike. I don't feel like I need more than that, they are good bikes and I don't do lots of different kinds of riding.
I agree with a previous post about why this site rocks...
I was feeling guilty about the purchase of a 2nd bike, until I read this post. Now I know that it is okay to have more than one bike, and apparently it's okay to have many bikes :p
Just for the record, I have a road bike that I will convert to a commuter, and I will be getting a Ruby Pro. Can't wait till she is finally mine!

My hybrid just left on the back of my brother-in-law's new camper :eek: Now I need a spare--just in case my bike has to go to the shop :D
I have 2 for now. A Gary Fisher HKEK mountain bike and my new Trek 520 touring/commuter bike. I had 4 but, had to sell two in order to afford a new bike this year. I plan to get a custom frame built up in the future.

Scott Contessa 30 Hardtail Mountain bike - currently on loan to a friend who wants to try dirt but not ready to buy.
Gary Fisher Hifi Deluxe - full suspension sweetness of a mountain bike.
Cannondale Synapse Carbon Roadie - I am bummed because she is a beauty and we have seen many miles but I got to admit I was steered wrong by a LBS that didn't care because they were going under in a matter of months. May be replacing the ill-fitting frame and keeping the components. My LBS wasn't sure they could do much to dial in the fit, the top tube is way too long. :(

Great to hear that women like to own a lot of bikes too!! Still not as excessive as the guys on bentrideronline (I am talking some own 10 bikes!)
Now, the next loaded question, because this always gives me a giggle. Do you ask you significant other for permission to get another bike? This kills me that guys think they have to get their wives permission to get another bike!
Four, but really only riding two these days. Road bike is a Peter Mooney with 26"/650c wheels equipped for commuting, touring, and long rides. Bridgestone MB-3 MTB (steel frame, no suspension) for errands, rainy commutes, and winter use. Old 80s steel road bike with sewups still ridable but not much use for it. The 1954 Raleigh 3-speed is hanging in my basement also.
I have two, my Kona Dew plus which is my "town" bike and used to commute and haul kids around and my beautiful f.s. mtn bike, a Specialized Era.
My partner has no less than four and is awaiting the arrival of the fifth, a custom steel commuter.
This means that I am due for a couple new rides (the next purchase will be a Luna for me).
In our house the appropriate number of bikes to own is n+1, where n is the number currently owned.
We always check with the other before bike (and other big) purchases, because our bikes are rather expensive and we like to involve each other in the shopping.

Get ready then - I personally own 10, with DH owning another 10 (or maybe 11). I like Zen's philosophy, but a couple more and I have two Tuesday bikes that can't possibly be ridden on Wednesday :D. I do actually ride my Bike Friday on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday because I keep it at the country house where I spend many weekends.
I also have a Monday bike (Luna=lundi=Monday) that Is my weekday bike that I keep at my city house.
I also have a Jamis Coda for errands and commuting, a Raleigh project bike that is still in the project stage, and a 1986 Specialized Stumpjumper that I raced when mountain bike racing was still a very new sport on the east coast. It's currently slated to become an Xtracycle one of these days.
So 3 bikes in the active rotation, and 2 project bikes.
