I am actually biking today, I just wanted to get the new thread started.:)
You've been thinking about that title all week and couldn't wait to post it... weren't you?
I'm not running either, just showing up to hassle people.
No running today for me! A second day of rest in a row to nurse my slight (presumed) left-foot tendonitis of the big toe! :o This is my last week of actual, planned running until the next season. I have a 8K race on Sunday so it's also taper week. Tomorrow I'll be testing the course, but ride my bike down there to avoid having to run up the hill (which aggravates the toe...).
I hope someone gets a run for me though. It's raining and I don't dislike running in the rain!
I just got back from my run/walk. Today I started a couch to 5K program and I found out running is not that bad.
I hope everyone else has a good running week!
Actually Yoda, I sat down this morning and said..hey, nobody started the thread...oh boy, I get to do it..and then went...SNAP...I have nothing witty to put in my title....and I seriously wracked my brain trying to come up with something...it was pretty funny....
No running for me today but I just made my hotel reservations for the half marathon in May :D:D:D It's becoming more and more real and I'm very excited.
Hi! I don't usually post here, but love the reading! I ran five miles today on the treadmill. We got 2 feet of snow here in W. NY in the last few days, so no outside work. I am doing 10 minute miles with the last .25 of each mile at an 8.5 minute pace. I don't run on pavement much, so it will be awhile until I can get out on the trails.
I have signed up for the Western States training run over Memorial day. The first day is 32 miles and then 20 and 20. I'm taking it one day at a time!! I also am doing a 22K trail run locally in the beginning of May. Yikes!! I'd better ramp it up! I also spin three times a week and do resistance training.
Happy running!!
Laura
Got outside for a run today. It was a little chilly by the time I got home but it was still great. I ended up doing 5 miles. I'm pretty happy b/c I'm consistently doing 9:30 miles even on the hilly routes. That's pretty good for me. I'm more of a slow and steady girl for the most part.
Yikes HorseMom - that's awesome that you are going for all that. I could never do it but I am in awe of those that can.
I ran 3.5mi today after I got home - man that time change is nice :D I included a few intervals on the flat and then ran the steep hills coming home. Interesting note - apparently one of the houses caught on fire in my neighborhood. There were two fire trucks there and a pumper truck was leaving as I ran by. Didn't look too bad, though.
For the month I have run 16.5mi so far - that is doing good for me
Good title, RNRG! http://smileys.on-my-web.com/reposit.../happy-098.gif
Horsemom, that is brutal! I've done 2 big days in a row but never 3. The nice thing about it is that walking is perfectly OK! And you can eat everything in sight and then some. Mmmmmm.....food. :)
Last week was a little slim for running as Mr. Yellow had his shoulder rebuilt (labral tear, 4 screws, shaving off of the scapula, removal or some bursa) and I had to supervise the narcotic stupor and play nurse. But he's functioning by himself now, so I'm back to a more normal schedule. I still wanted to get in a couple of long back-to-backs, which I did Saturday & Sunday in the snow/slush/mud...even though I know I can make it, I'm still having performance anxiety about the 25K this weekend. And I won't be running in snow, which will be a switch.
Ah, but this week is cycle down week, so I get to take it easy. Had a nice, relatively easy (if not muddy/slushy) 4 mile trail run after work today. I'll run tomorrow, have to take Wed off as I have a night meeting for work, fly out on Thursday, easy runs Thursday and Friday AT SEA LEVEL (!!!), rest Saturday, and the big run is on Sunday. It's in Froglegs' neck of the woods, in Los Osos, CA.
In case I get swamped later in the week and don't post it...
Good luck this weekend Yellow!
You'll do great.
HR - that's crazy running.:eek::D
I'm not at all happy to be running in the dark again in the morning! However, I had a very good run. 3.72 miles, 35:58, 9:40 pace. It felt good! :)
Wow Horsemom! You are my Heeeeero! I'd better not tell my DH about your event - he'd immediately decide it was a good thing to do (all winter he's been finding 50ks & things to do in the mountains while sitting on his butt on the couch, not running, not skiing, etc). Frankly, I'm frightened!
Okay, I haven't read the running threads since ski season started. My last ski race was Sunday, and today was going to be my very first, ultra-short run of the season. So I was up sick all night last night , and I'm home sick today. So I guess I just needed to vent about that. I am achey, freezing, sleep-deprived, and can't eat. Okay, an hour ago I had a little Jello (yay- it stayed down - and in).
I would normally still be skiing (well, my plan is to alternate days until my legs get back into running and the snow gets bad), but I have a 1/2 marathon on May 10th or 9th or something, so I've gotta get crackin'. At least the wind is howling out there, so I don't really want to be out in it.
Sigh......
It sounds like some of you have great plans! Have a fun one, Yellow!
Hey Yellow, good luck! You'll be awesome!
Horsemom, that sounds like a really cool event. I read about the Transrockies challenge (running) recently and I thought it was interesting, but your three-day event is really more accessible than that 5-day thing! I am not yet putting in the distance required to race a 32-miler but if I ever do I think it will be for trail races, not pavement marathons. I hope you enjoy your remaining training months!!
Good luck Yellow!!You always do so well!
I survived the respiratory flu. What an evil combination. DH now has it. I am finallly aware of my surroundings and oriented to time, place and person again:D. After 15 years on the peds floor I am usually able to avoid it but it is a different bug this year.
I managed to get in my slow 11 mile long run this past Saturday in the rain, snow slosh and a recovery 4 miler on the tread mill Sunday, and intervals last night after work. Today I need to run a tempo. The sun is out :)so I need to take advantage of the rays. I have about 5 weeks until the Salt Lake Half April 19th. Yellow I'll be calling you to meet for dinner and hit the bike shops.
TEIGRY where is your half mary?
Good to have you back JLZ.
A cautious "yay" on 3.5 km which was much more of a run than the shuffle I've been doing so far to protect my shins - after my PT said that "I'll live" last week, I was feeling a bit more courageous.
He worked those trigger points so hard I'm still a bit sore on day 6 (and going back tomorrow); he can work on the back side which cramped up overnight.
Oh. went at 6.30 am too. *pats herself on the back* :p
Yo,
I did my walk run today. I did a 5 min walk and then 4 min jog/ 1 min walk for 25 mins and a 5 min cool down and then inside to do my weights and leg exercises.
I was tight from cycling last night but no knee pain.:)
Thanks for the words of encouragement! I am really not a super runner. I run 8-15 miles with my horses when I do 50 and 100 mile races to ease the burden on them! I don't look like a runner at all!!!!
The thing with trail running, especially in the mountains, is that you *can* walk - in fact, you pretty much have to walk the steep upgrades, so it is like power hiking. Another key (and I am not there yet) is to learn to let yourself go and 'roll' down the grades when you can. It takes alot of concentration to keep from stepping wrong, or getting out of control. My running partner (in CA, I am in NY) is super on the downhills--like I said, I am still learning.
Ran 5 miles on the treadmill today--a little faster than yesterday, but boredom is setting in!! We have 2 feet of snow - but I really really want to trail run!!
Keep goin' girls!!!!
Laura
Had a good treadmill ride today -- felt much better (physically and mentally) than on my ill-fated trail run on Sunday. Did 5 miles at a 10:15 overall pace -- my fastest ever. Finished strong. I felt like I could have run 6 if I'd had more time.
We're going to the coast this weekend, so I'll finally get to run outside on a flat road, which should be interesting. The last time we went down there (the week between Christmas and New Year's), running was very hard as it was warm, sunny, and humid (not much shade), and I wasn't in very good shape, I found out as my DH left me far, far in the dust. I am in better shape now, so I'm looking forward to trying again!
Emily
Ran 4.75 miles outside (beautiful day) at a 11:30 minute mile pace.
I tried a walk/run combo, but my legs were hurting from my 12 miler on Sunday. Running hurt less, so I ran.
Oddly I go FASTER when I walk/run, versus just running for longer distances. :o Very sad.
Not sad at all!!!
It's the same for just about everyone I know on a run longer than an hour.
I run-walked my last half-marathon at a rate of 1 minute walked for each 20 minutes ran. Some guy passed me while I was walking and I passed him immediately after. As I got next to him, he said "I guess this run/walk thing is working!?" and I told him he should try it sometimes, it sure worked for me. We chatted for a few seconds and then I left him. I looked for him to pass me on my next walk but he never did...
Every time I start running after walking I feel just totally fresh. It's much easier to take scheduled walking breaks than to walk because you can't run anymore.
Keep doing it! You'll find it really efficient!
Run/walk works really well for a lot of people. It allows you enough rest to help maintain form so you're more efficient when you do run and you're less likely to hurt yourself. I walk through aid stations on my longer races. I don't walk a full minute but I do take breaks.
I'm not running right now. Well you all knew that. I just wanted to whimper a bit.
I ran 2 short miles this evening. I practiced things from the running form thread and I can see where I am off! I still have residual aching things but there was nothing new and the old stuff appeared to be abating. I realized that the reason why walking never felt better than running was because my running form was my basic walking form, ie heel to toe. I can see by a midfoot strike how there could be so much power but for now if I stop thinking about it, I start going back to the old way.
Practice.
Anyway, I'm pretty excited!!
I water ran for 20 min tonight as part of my tri-club workout. Boooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg.:p
I thought about running today. I even took all my gear to work with me. Does that count? :o
I made it outside today! Hoorah! No wind, no rain.
5.5 miles. Had a similar to Emily run... Shoes came untied several times, had to stop to potty, my "semi-tied-on" vest kept falling off, and came across a couple people on the trail that were "chatty". But all in all, it was a good run... a lot of breaks make it seem easier when you start -- refreshed over and over again!
I tried some of the ideas on that "run mechanics" you-tube thing someone posted. I realized that I was also doing the shuffling and landing heel first -- having sore toes from shoving them into the ends of my shoes and sore calves to go along with it. Today went much better! I had to concentrate on lifting my feet more / pushing off more on release, and that made it easier to strike as my foot was already coming backwards, so as not to land on the heel.
OK.. bottom line -- a little more effort, but my calves feel GREAT, and my toes don't hurt! AND, according to the i-pod nikeplus, I ran my fastest mile ever today! Hmmm... I guess they know what they are talking about! And my back doesn't hurt tonight!
My first run outside since Thanksgiving. First, I SERIOUSLY taped up my foot, though. I went for 43 1/2 minutes. I think it was about 4 miles. I'll have to clock it with the car later today. My foot was a little sore, but I'm walking fine now. Yay!
I did a little pool running myself today after my swim. Just 10 mins. Although I felt fine, I am so completely paranoid about adding anything new in to the mix while I am jsut recovering from the knee injury. I wll run again outside this w/e.
My current plan is a swim, a bike, a run during the week, and a swim, a bike and a run over the weekend. Everything easy, easy, easy....
3-13-08 Run: How slow can Karen go?
Yea, that should be the title.
I was scheduled for a 60 minute run. I did 1 hour and 6 minutes (took a wrong turn), 5.30 miles with a 12:30 minute mile. OUCH.
I haven't run that slow in about 6 months. The last time I went this slow, it was in my HIM and I had to walk the whole 1/2 marathon and couldn't even train a month beforehand due to injuries.
I did a 5 minute walk/2 minute run combo. Which typically I do a 11:30 minute mile or faster with this. Somehow I added a minute to my per mile pace.
Yea, I was a slug out there. So sad.
Oh well, I can only get faster, right?
Karen, sorry you had a bad run.
I had a great run this morning! I pushed my distance up to 4 miles (first time!) and still improved on my pace from Tuesday's 3.7 miler. My running feels wonderful right now; everything clicking into place. Makes me wish I had a race soon! :D
C'mon Karen, cheer up. You're putting your body and mind through a lot lately, have some kind words for them!
Unless you're trying to go pro and get sponsors, I say don't worry about speed!
Gentle run on most of this weekend's race course this morning. I did the unthinkable: I did not want to run back up the hill and stress my tendon more so I drove down  (it's 3 km away), parked the car near the start of the race and took it from there.
I think the trails are going to be quite wet on the weekend, it's already muddy and it hasn't rained that much. That should make for an interesting race!!
Karen - we all have days where we just can't get our legs to work - trust me, I'd say about 1/2 of my days are like that
Anyways, I had today off and decided to do my long run of 8mi for the week. Went pretty well. I did 3 loops of 2.5mi each with a 1/4mi walk to and from the loop to w/u and c/d. Well, as I was finishing my 2nd loop it started to rain some, so I picked up the pace quite a bit for a while until it stopped. Didn't want to be 2mi from home if the sky dropped out
I ran 6 miles today and it still felt really great! I continued to think about my form and where my feet were hitting. Nothing hurt (unless I'd start to slip and go back to running on my heels) and I had more energy. It could be that this has been an easy week too though :o
Regardless, I didn't walk at all. Usually if I do a longer type run I have a turn around point or stairs or stoplights somewhere along the way. I did constant loops with this one and still felt good at the finish.
Karen, please don't be too hard on yourself. I've been thinking I've really been sucking lately and it's not a fun thought. You've been through a lot and it takes a while to catch back up. Sometimes it's frustrating to be amazed by small accomplishments; I know for myself I look for more then get disappointed. And re speed, Grog is right. If you don't enjoy yourself, what's the point?
Thanks for all the kind words ladies. I appreciate it.
Yes, it was a sucky day, but I know it's just one day. There are good days and bad. One day you right like a gazzelle... the next day a tired turtle.
I was honestly SHOCKED at how slow it was though. But my nutrition was off during the day, and I think it showed.
Eh, I'm sure this weekend will be better.
On the upside, I had an amazing ride on Wednesday. I blew past a lot of boys and my boyfriend said he had never seen me ride so fast! Even a 25 mph headwind didn't slow me down!
First run of a program I am following from Running for Mortals. I guess I should have refreshed my memory. I ran a minute and walked a minute. WRONG....I was suppose to run 1 and walk 3 for 6 sets which I also lost complete count of the sets and did probably did like 8 to be safe.
If I have no aches tomorrow I guess I did no harm.
~JoAnn
Well I finally went for my first post-op run yesterday. I had been trying to get myself out after school for the past two days but I've been so tired and my eyes are fatigued and blurry by that time of day so I kept bringing my running gear back home unused. Anyway, after I got home, I had a nap and listened to a Running podcast that motivated me to get up out of bed, get dressed and just do it. And I felt fine. It was weird to run without perfectly clear vision but I was careful to avoid rough road and I felt confident enough.
My body, on the other hand, wasn't used to running after 10 days off, and it objected a little. It was the first time I had tried out my new cut-down left orthotic and, sad to say, I still felt pain at the top on my foot so I guess I'll have to go back in for a recast. That's a drag. Once I got going, my foot stopped hurting though and my other achey parts started to warm up so I was able to do the same 3-4 minute run intervals that I was doing 10 days ago. And today I am feeling fine, no shin pain at all - hurrah!
I will go for a run again tomorrow and then DH and I are off for a week on the west coast so I won't be doing a lot of working out. I might run if the opportunity presents itself but I'm not going to stress about it. Training begins agains the day after Easter.... :D
I have been struggling this week, I put it down to a combination of time of the month and some serious passive smoking! I visited my folks in Scotland last week, now all my family and all my Scottish friends smoke , I never have :D, its always been like that. For the last few years when OH and I go up to visit we take bikes/walking gear etc and are generally out and about but this time as OH was away I was on my own, the weather was pretty awful for hill walking and I don't like MTBing on strange trails on my own, so I pretty much just visited friends and family and was smoked on. God knows how many cigarettes worth of rubbish I have inhaled but after two days I was insisting we go to the pub so I could get away from it (yay for smoking bans!). Now I used to live in that environment about 10 years ago and coped (or did I? ) but now I spend no time in a smoky environment and have no friends here who smoke so all this week my chest has been so tight and sore, I just know its from the cig smoke
I ran on Tuesday for 5 miles and struggled for breath a bit and ran with the club on Thursday for about 5.5 miles, I was better but it was a harder run that I am used to as we were chasing the faster runners so I still struggled for breath especially up some hills which I can normally cope with.
Today is start of period day so I'm always a little out of whack but I set off for a trail run then turned round after 1.5 miles as I was just drained, didn't even have the energy to run downhill which is not like me. I have obviously not eaten enough this week, seemed to be constantly hungry at work Thursday and Friday. I came home from the run and have eaten some yoghurt and honey, some G & Bs ginger chocolate :D, a pitta bread and some houmous and I have just polished off the most enormous bowl of pasta and now I'm eyeing up the remains of the Margarita ice cream I made a few weeks ago.....Had a bit of a thought, maybe the reason I get so tired during my period is because I don't eat enough, you need up to 500 extra cals a day around this time or something ? Nutrition has never been my strong point. I have a 25 mile MTB ride planned tomorrow - I will be filling my camelbak bladder with sports drink, I normally just eat a bar when I remember (usually when hungry and its too late) but I'm taking no chances.
Sorry that was long!
