Marni, when you started private training, was it a bit of a shock when you realized you could do x or y? Do you think it all depends on your trainer?
I have been continually lucky in having 4 trainers, two former marines in their mid 20's, a retired and retrained sociologist, and a tri athelete who have all emphasized periodic "see how far you've come" workouts in which they have me do the exercise at the weight or resistance I started out a couple of times and then taking it up to the current weight and or resistance and making me take it to burn out. Some things I keep a mental chart on like leg presses which when I started out I could barely do 10 at fifty pounds, and am currently at 2 sets of 25 at 240 pounds so I am frequently getting reminders of how far I have come, and how much better I feel and how much more I can do. Yes it has to do with the quality of the trainers, as I know they all are not just saying it to earn their fee, but all have listened seriously to what I wanted to accomplish and have helped me, sometimes in the most unique ways, achieve that and just a little bit more. Most importantly, they have worked continuously with me for full body training, keeping the muscle bulk down, acknowledging that I am a biker and that certain areas need certain kinds of work.
That being said, the highest thrills I have had have been doing my first century ride (13.7 mph 15 hours including stops) dead lifting my own body weight two days in a row (two years ago) and most recently discovering that I can actually run a mile, and today I discovered I can run three!!!!
The confidence lifts come along less often now,but I am still growing at 5-10% in weight, resistance or repetition every 3-4 month's so its all good.
I also love my balance and confidence on the bike, especially when I decide to pull a sprint and can feel my legs respond and my breathing kick in and it's feels easy. That's the best reward.
