Been catching up on this thread and it's great how you all are supporting each other in the battle of the bulge! I've been fighting weight gain for several years now and finally have it on the run. I am 5'1" and weighed 170 pounds 2 years ago. Fought and fought, different diets, sometime exercise, sometimes not  Finally, in January, weighing in at 160 pounds, I started taking spinning classes, also signed up for the Flat Belly Diet on Prevention.com and so far I am down to 149!! I want to lose 20 more pounds at least, so I need to stay motivated and keep going.
I hope you guys don't mind if I hang out on this thread and maybe I can join your next challenge!!
Thanks, Bambu!
I agree 100%.

Hi all... I will be out of town for a couple of days. Will update the weekend's weight chart when I return. HAPPY WEEKEND ALL!
Jes
I just realized that I never posted on Friday!
I weighed in at 167.7. After a full week of logging all my food and exercising, I'm down a lovely 0.1 lbs. Nice.
To be fair, Friday night I was up all night getting sick...so something obviously isn't working right at the moment. I then spent the weekend NOT logging and not exercising. Ugh.
I had a very bad moment last night. I was looking at my naked body in the mirror in the bathroom right before bed and I realized that no matter how I turned or sucked or flexed...I could NOT make myself look good. Wah. When I'm this overweight, exercise sucks. It hurts when I do it and it hurts after I'm done. I've GOT to turn this around. I've never been so overweight in my entire life.
I think my plan is just going to be head down, foward motion. I know what I need to do and I'm going to force myself to do it. Screw enjoying myself or my workouts or 'feeling better'. At this point, I'm reaching critical density...I need to tough it out and get things going in the right direction.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just needed to get it out, I guess. :o
Catherine, why not give super low carb a try, if only to jump start things and get some semblance of control. You mentioned to me before that you did well on moderate low carb. Have you ever had your glucose tolerance measured? I wonder if you have impaired glucose tolerance like me.
For me, I combine super low carb with high protein, so that I can slowly make glucose by gluconeogenesis, as well as burn amino acids for fuel during cycling. I bring bottles with carb free protein shakes on my ride, as well as almonds. It does take your body about a week to adapt to running on a higher percentage of fat than carbs, but if you goal is to lose body fat why not give it a try. Even if you don't have impaired glucose tolerance, it will put you in a hormonal state that favors fat burning (glucagon>insulin) rather than fat storage (insulin>glucagon).
WHen you eat a lot of carbs, you secrete insulin to clear the carbs, even with normal glucose tolerance. If you have impaired glucose tolerance its even worse, cuz you'll have to be in a state where insulin>glucagon for a longer time to clear a glucose load.
Many don't realize it, but even fruit and so-called healthy starches, whole grains, etc. rapidly turn to sugar when they are metabolized, and do induce insulin secretion. If you have a very effecient glucose metabolism, this is probably not problematic, but as we age it can become less effecient, especially in those of us that put on weight.
Hey Trisk - I know I'm not glucose intolerant (or at least, not severely) but in general, I do perform better on a modified carb diet. For me, the greatest benefit is the overall reduction in cravings.
But unfortunately, that's not the reason I'm so overweight now. I'm just plain lazy. I gotta get off this self-defeating train!! I'm not one of those people who is doing everything right and just not losing (at least, not at the moment). For me, I'm not even doing it right. :p I've not been inspired and I've just been too preoccupied with other things to get back on track like I should have.
Thanks though!
Sorry I didn't check in right away. I've been keeping up with my Friday weigh-in's but haven't had a chance to log on lately. I weighed in at 158.8 last Friday.
OK.. I'm having trouble saving the excel sheet this week so I'll type it all here... if you aren't on the list, it's because I didn't get a weight from last weekend... let me know and I'll get you back on the list next week!

Good job everyone! GO MOTOCHIK!!!!!! OVER 5% LOST! :D That's awesome!
Hmmm.. I just previewed this and it took out all my spacing... sorry for the bunching up of names, and number, but apparently that is as good as it gets! I really did have it all nicely in columns when I started! :(
So here I am hanging out at 149. Not sure what direction I should take. I did try WW for 6 weeks and did not lose any weight. My Dr has been messing around with my thyroid medication which I am sure does not help. I have not been sleeping well for close to 3 months. Dr changed my medication about 2 weeks ago and I am now actually sleeping again. What a relief. I am thinking about a decreasing my carb intake a bit.
I fit into my cool red pants that I haven't been able to wear for four years!!! :D
Today's weight- 175.4
This makes an even 5 pounds, which might not sound like a lot, but I am thrilled, and motivated to keep going!
167
Down one — now at 179. :)
139 today :( Besides being TTOM our office went to lunch twice this week and I didn't get much excercise either.
I was late getting up and jumped in the shower before I remembered that today was weigh-in day...so I'll weigh tomorrow. Oops!
Ugh, I weighed in at 122.1 this morning. I know it's just a 'fat' day but I'm definitely up at least a pound since last week, maybe more.
I missed last weeks weigh in because I did my first organized ride. So back at the scales this week. It was 153.5. I believe that is down 1.5 from 2 weeks ago.
Kim
OK, hate to admit it, but I am up to 129. I did so well while cutting out alcohol for a week, but we went camping, and like an idiot, I made peanut butter cookies. Bo, were they good!! I did ride 73 miles on Sunday, but I guess that wasn't enough.
On another note, my hubby just bought me a new fancy scale that has body fat measurements. Haven't seen it yet but I am sure it is more accurate then the one I have now. (hope mine has been weighing heavy!)
Brenda
show me at 138.2 which is good. my problem has been since i went to a 4-and-3 schedule. i now have 3 days to be off my routine, but i think i've been good so far this weekend.
142 again! :(
Lynette
Hey everyone... I'm out of town, so I'll check in on Monday morning with a weight and then get everone else's recorded. Good work this week! I'm VERY afraid... three days of eating and being with friends.... very little working out. I hope to hit the trainer tonight once I'm home!
Jes
Sorry I haven't checked in until now but I did weigh myself Friday morning. 157.8
Ugh, Saturday morning: 168.0!
Somebody smack me. I've GAINED more weight since this challenge started than most peole have lost, for Pete's sake!
Anyway, I did put together a long term plan for myself. 30 lbs to lose, 7 months in which to do it. I've got weekly loss goals (not weight goals) so that I do this for the long haul. I don't remember how long this challenge was going to run, but I hope that it'll be around at least enough weeks so that I can get back down to my start weight! :p
Hey guys - I am bailing out of the challenge - I won't be home for 2 out of the next 3 weigh ins and won't have access to the computer. I have been training HARD the last two week and maintaining my weight just as I should be. I am up a bit but know that it is muscle - I am so close to goal weight (3#'s) that at this point it really just seems insignificant to keep going with the challenge.
Thanks and I will keep checking back and keeping tabs on how it is going! Keep your resolve, friends, and good luck!
Enjoy your traveling and congratulations on your hard work! Jes
I, too have to bail on the weight loss challenge. My unexpected surgery has made it very difficult for me to workout, let alone sit on a bike seat for the next 3 weeks. Boy, does this SUCK!
Catch me on the next one. I will be all better!
JEN JEN: I really hope you heal quickly and can get active again soon! Being sidelined is so frustrating! Take Care!
Weigh-in for 4/11/08:
174.2 :)
138 today.
Flybye - Have a great time in your travels.
Jen-Jen - Hope you heal quickly, without any complications or further set backs.
Well, I am up to 151:( I have been trying hard too. kind of frustrating. I will keep at it. Something has to work.
Is there any chance I can join in, if it's not too late, perhaps I can pinch Flybye's place, as she has dropped out.
I have not had the best of health for a while, since being diagnosed with COPD...........BUT since hearing all about Running Mommy and her IMAZ she is about to do, it has drawn me back to this site.
Probably like many, when you are out of salts, you think everybody else is slim and fit and doing well.............well, of course I am dumb thinking that. However, it still does not get away from the fact that I have piled the weight on, as have not been able to exercise or ride.
So, please let me know if I can join in.
If I can't, still like to wish good luck to all you other guys.
Clock
Everyone is welcome, at any time. (Of course I don't make up the spread sheet but I'm sure that's what they'd say. )
I am UP this week. Jeepers creepers. 122.4
Not sure how much longer you guys are going on this challenge, but I count me in. I have about 20 pounds to lose. Was doing really good in January, but have kind of stalled, so I'll need to change something to get the weight loss going again.
I'm starting at 149.
Same at 179.0. I've been exercising more and eating no more than 1200 cals per day, plus just started working with a personal trainer. Won't anything work anymore? Completely bummed out!
144 - Ugh! Pretty disgusting, actually. :(
How many more weeks do I have to turn this around?
Lynette
137.2 this week. woohoo.
kjay - dont get discouraged, it'll happen. you hit plateaus as your body adjusts.
Damn, following PinkBike at 137.2............ but well done.
Although far too much, I weigh in at around 170 but since being unwell, it has shot up to 187!
Carrying extra weight with this damned COPD thing, is not very sensible, so I really have to make a big effort.
...............goes off to make porridge for breakfast.........without sugar!
