I run a kiosk/ canteen at our local high school.
So that is a bit of everything - sandwich making, pastry-baking, sweets and drinks selling, listening-ear, advisor on matters great and small and provider of small practical solutions (eg safety pin, scotch-tape), homework help, weather forecasting, stand-up comedy.
Plus I make bread, youghurt and cheese for the household and do any "complicated" kitchen work (eg cakes).
Plus I am mother to DS#1 (19), DD (18) and DS#2 (14)
Sr Research Coordinator at a breast care center, offering National Cancer Institute (NCI) trials to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, part time I am a pharmacy technician and mix chemotherapy.
I went back to school and graduated last year to be an X-ray tech. Also have a computer/electronics engineering degree. I mostly got into building servers, refurbishing/fixing computers, desktop publishing, laser imaging, ... I didn't really like it so much so that's why the return to school. I love what I do now. I've just moved to OR from PA (I love having a career where I can easily do that) and am waiting to start my new job. The best part is, I'll be able to ride to work now. Yea!! :D
Wow, what an amazing spread of jobs we have. :)
I work for a network security software company. My husband works here, too, and writes software. My job is a little harder to nail down, so I won't bore you with the details. Suffice it to say, I work a lot, and do a lot of different things. ;)
We sell our software on a big beefy server to a lot of banks, hospitals, public utilities, retail companies, you name it. Basically, it monitors the security of the network and lets you know when something's up. Interesting stuff, if you're a total nerd. :p
I'm a licensed clinical social worker - and Director of an HIV/AIDS Service Organization. I love it. I also do training/supervision consulting work in social work.
Waaay overeducated and underpaid toxicologist (not to be confused with taxidermist - can't get a PhD in that, as far as I know).
I'm a full time undergrad student (at 39!) majoring in geology. :D I like rocks:D
I'm a senior, but I'm looking at 2 more years til I graduate.
I'm taking the scenic route through school. I do a bit of research and teaching assisting on campus for pocket money.
Teacher since 1991:
Teacher of Freshman Comp/Public Speaking at TSC (now the college of NJ)
Many years teaching the Writing Program at Rutgers Univ
A brief stint teach HS English ran screaming from the building. (Loved the kids - didn't play well w/ my supervisor)
Returned to Rutgers for a few years before making a switch to IT.
The last several years teaching IT at Monmouth Univ. while I began to work freelance teaching teachers how to integrate technology into the classroom.
Now my consulting business teaching IT to teachers and administrators is getting so busy I'm considering leaving MU.
What's nice is that in spite of all the hours I spend working - most of it I do on my own schedule so if it's nice I can be outside during the days. :D
Of course, as those of you in education know, none of this pays much at all.
Special Review Clerk, Registered Mail. At what's known as a 'con-con' facility. I look up bad address and make sure that those diamond rings get delivered to the correct address.
East Hill
Kay - your memory is REALLY BAD! You can get one the same place Miss Greater Richmond got her's at the US Open Champs - the Dollar store!
I am a child development specialist for a school system in Virginia, working in their Head Start program and serving children from birth through age 5.
Student is my first job. X-Ray tech.
Pharmacy Tech to help pay a few bills. Left dentistry after 12 years and to many God-syndrome docs.
I am several things:
To make money, I am one of the most hated people in the hospital, lol. I'm a phlebotomist, aka "Vampire." I am grateful I don't work the night or morning shifts, as I don't really wake anyone up to stick them! I work 1200-2230 for seven days in a row, the I get seven days off typically. Right now they've got me down for lots of extra shifts and on-calls (which is where I am right now...they called me in until 0300 this morning, and even called me in yesterday for 7 hours).
I am a musician and artist around town when I can as well. I'm a percussionist/drummer to several studios in the area, and orchestras, and do paintings to sell on the internet. I used to do jewlery, but haven't in a while.
I love my life, I love my jobs :)
Paralegal for a non-profit civil litigation organization. I've been working for the same organization for the past 5 years, but only a little over one year here in our new Northern California regional office (moved here from AZ to open this office).
Oh, and how could I forget the most important job in the world - Beagle couch (we have two - Snoopy and Lucy). :)
I've a B.S. in zoology, a M.S. in science education, and A.S. in veterinary technology, which makes me bullsXXt, more sXXt, all sXXt. I worked as a tech at a practice in Dorchester (one of the poorer neighborhoods of Boston) for 17 years, and have spent the past 7 years in a practice in one of the higher income suburbs of Boston. I've gotten black eyes, had my lip ripped open from nose to lip, had cat bites twice require IV antibiotics for 48 hours, also 2 episodes of Cat Scratch Disease that lead to lymph node biopsies. On the good days I just pick up dogs. I've dropped my floor to table lifts to 70 lbs, no amount of Kegel's assure my continence at higher weights. My body is feeling the wear & tear of my occupation too much and I'm planning on "retiring" next year even though I will only be 61. Hopefully I'll be able to find part time work to help make ends meet, ideally in a bike shop.
I agree with Duck on this one....I'll take the expert on vein poking every time!
H&B
~T~
my former career: therapist specializing in treating people with post traumatic stress disorder and addictions. I did this for over 15years and needed a change. ...
Law student UNTIL MAY 19, 2007: then I will be a law school graduate! then...just another schlump wasting away studying for the bar exam(s).
LOL, thanks for showing the Vampire some love... after the past two days at work, I needed the smile :)
Sorry for the hijack, TE. Duck, I wasn't aware that she was Dad's cousin's ex's second wife. (I'm serious TE:cool: ;) )
Means we're kinda sorta distantly related to Oppi? Unfortunately I don't have your or our mutual Mom's head for geneology.
Ok, I'll get us back on track; I work for da' phone co, in customer service now but might transfer to tech side of the house. And no, I don't want to hear about your bill right now, it's my day off.  ;)
now that i have a job change, and upgrade, i am a budget technician.
Day Drummer I send you much love for being a expert at getting blood from a turnip. My husband is on week three of hopsital stay (for who knows how long) and we both love the phlebotimists (even if I can't spell it) He's a hard stick and we would rather someone that knows what they're doing draw his samples!
I am a secretary at a small state university in Mississippi, (Delta State, home of the FIghting Okra) also a non tradtional student, working on a second degree (Psych). I want to teach somethingm, just as an adjunct- I need to keep my day job! I am also Mom to 2 fluffy pomeranians and these days I spend a lot of time driving back and forth from Cleveland to Jackson to see my husband who was just diagnosed with Leukemia.
First, let me state I'm insane for no sane person would do my job, really! I'm a middle school science teacher. Wait, let me add I teach 7th graders. You know those little ones with raging hormones. The ones that think school is for socializing, who needs an education. I typically get in the way of their socialing (this translates into "you're mean" which means I'm doing my job) thus hindering the development of their networking skills. I must be crazy to think that my discussion of genetics is more important than knowing who just broke up or who was sent to the office for sticking french fries up their nose at lunch. Back to the insane part - I must be for I've been doing this job (and loving every minute of it, well most) for the past 18 years.
Only 24 more days to go until summer vacation (I'm not counting).
Wow!! Someone else does what I do. I'm a biologist too. I restore all kinds of rare Southern CA habitats when another highway, home, school, etc. is built. If an oak tree is wiped out for development, I make sure as many as five more are planted to replace it. I also do rare plant and tree surveys, which means I count plants for a living.
I work for my two feline babies and to indulge my roommate's two dogs. Work also helps support my fiance's undergrad degree in computer engineering. Soon as he graduates, we're getting married and having human babies! We can have kids while he pursues a master's degree right?
I'm a full time Personal Trainer (I own my own In-Home Personal Training business) and then a part-time Fitness Instructor that only teaches indoor cycling classes (5 - 6 weekly), but I can, if asked nicely, sub kick-boxing, sculpting or aqua classes.
i'm graduating with a BA in cultural anthropology/ spanish lit/ latin american studies in... 4 days. WOO! :D
then i'm staying at the same university forever for an MS in Environmental Justice and a PhD in Anthropology. fingers crossed-- don't want to jinx anything (i will not purchase a "Michigan Alumni" t-shirt until i hold my degree in my hand, i swear)
i also work at a bike shop-- sales associate (but i'd like to learn to wrench)
I was trained as a bench scientist in genetics and molecular biology but I was not well suited for the emotional ups and downs of research. I never enjoyed it much and I got only a single publication. These days I do informatics database work for the National Cancer Institute.
Ex-biochemist here. I used to work on the protease enzyme that's in Tide laundry detergent.
:D Happy Administrative Professionals Day! :D
I'm an RN who works as a clinical educator in staff development.
Happy Administrative Assistant Day! I would be lost without our office assistant.
I used to do that, too. Mostly worked with commercial crab species, their environments, and predators. I miss the boat work and the lab and the beach work.
Yeah, the pay was pretty iffy and scarey... but the "sampling" of those big juicy red rock and dungeness crabs was mighty fine! *drool* :D
Washington, not to be out done, has the Evergreen College Fighting Geoduck (pronounced gooey-duck) that also has its own very interesting fight song. If you don't know what a geoduck looks like you should check it out - then you'll get the song http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoduck
The Geoduck Fight Song
(words and music by Malcolm Stilson, 1971)
Go, Geoducks go,
Through the mud and the sand,
let's go.
Siphon high, squirt it out,
swivel all about,
let it all hang out.
Go, Geoducks go,
Stretch your necks when the tide
is low
Siphon high, squirt it out,
swivel all about,
let it all hang out.
