Thread Drift

OK, you guys. Tell me what you think. You know I'm back on the dating thing. I've gotten emails from several guys in the 60-62 yr old range. That is to say, 14-16 years older than me. They seem like really interesting men, but they're closer in age to my mom than to me! Interesting older men, but not men I would date. Am I being foolish in declining to get to know them because of our age difference? Or am I just going with what I find attractive...and there's no over-riding that.

One guy I said "no thanks" to based on his distance from Chicago. Mr. FarAway lives equally far away, in the other direction, but is 'only' 51. (We have our second date next Saturday) And I have my doubts about such a distance in dating--limited time as it is, and then the travel. Anyway. The age question. I want to ride and xc ski and run with a partner. Not saying a 62 year old wouldn't, but...and then the plain ol' attraction factor. So. Whatdya think?

Attraction means a lot but you really shouldn't discount someone merely on age. I'm probably going to be strung up and shot for this, but I'm thinking the only concern as far as men and age would go is his compatibility with your desired sex life. As it is, older men tend to be on the 'right' side of the balance of 'confident and self-assuredness' and 'concieted and arrogant' that all men seem to be on, maybe due to age, maybe due to just experience. Who knows?

Then again, between having a husband 6mo older than myself, and a boyfriend 14 years older than myself (not at the same time) the older guy was still more immature and more insecure than XDH. *shrug*

Regarding the distance thing; if it *really* works out, and you decide to cohabitate, someone would end up moving anyhow. Make it be him ;)

lise, I went through an older man phase when I was single - I think the oldest was 20 years my senior - I was 23 at the time. See, there is your problem, the guys in their 40s are dating women in their 20s. I was in a bar rest room one day and this woman was complaining to her friend about this problem - and then went on talking about this guy that she really likes, but, "I hear he is hooking up with some 20-something bimbo" I was the 20-something in question and really resented the bimbo label. Now at 40 I can understand while she was pissed - although I still resent the bimbo comment.

Anyway to answer your actual question, yeah, I would probably date an older guy - i think about 15 years would be my cut-off.

I have been married forever, so for whatever it is worth, I say try dating an older guy, who knows, you may find him quite attractive and athletic.

I wasn't implying that I was going to oil the chain like a bike chain. It has auto-oilers, so just keep the reservoir filled. It must oil sparingly, though - makes me nervous that the chain doesn't feel very oily. For starting, I generally use the handle-butt between the knees method, and I always wear my kevlar chaps and hard hat with face shield.

Lise - I'm not a good one to talk about age differences. Everyone I've had a crush on/dated/"married" has been older than me. All of them.

I'm sure there's some deep and meaningful insight there.

Trust me, after a year of bike-soiled dish towels, bike/mechanic/outdoorsystuff cluttered house, drama, money issues, mania and mayhem, I understand the laughter, and you might, too ;) In lotsa ways, I'm 'very' 20.

Lise, Bubba is 10 and a half years older than I. He's 58 and going strong. He chases me up the hills and I chase him down. Comes out even in the end. May it go on forever. Those that have met him can tell you if it's just my rose-colored glasses but I think he's a young 58. Our regular ride friends, both road and dirt, span 4 decades and sometimes 5, depending on the current year's crop of twenty-somethings (living in a college town they tend to grow up, get real jobs and move away).

We met when we were 24 and 34. I don't think it would have worked if we had met when I was younger. I think the years mean less as you grow older. I have always been attracted to older men which, of course, was a big problem in high school but my parents and I made it safely through. Whew! :eek: :D I think each person wears his or her age differently. My parents were born old. Bill's mom has been young until recently - she's 96. We were starting to wonder if she is bionic.

If the guys are 62 and play golf at most, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to meet them. If they're going to the senior olympics in swimming/cycling/whatever -- I'd be ringing 'em up at least for a cup of coffee. I know some older guys that can wax my Amici Veloci axe on the bike.

310 pages.... wow... I've been busy back to work and got behind on reading TD. Was going to skip it but saw that BMO3 managed to entire thing so thought I'd better get caught up.

All I can say this evening is:

"'tis a braw, bricht, moonlicht nicht t' nicht." Not sure if the spelling's right though... My dear Scottish Grandpa taught me how to say that when I was a wee bairn. I remember my favourite movie when I was a kid was about some Scottish kids who find a baby and try to look after it themselves. Can't remember what it was called. Mid 1960's? Anyway, I LOVED the way they said "wee babby".

Lise - my ex and my SO are both 10 years older than me. Kelownaguy is 56 and is very athletic and active. We do tons of active things together and although there's a chance I will spend some years alone after he's gone, you never know. I'm certainly not going to let something like age stop a good relationship. I'd take a mature man over a young idiot anyday.

Lise - I would date an older man - but if he was old enough to be my father - umm... no - that would be just too wierd for me - my daughter is starting a relationship with a man who is older than ME :eek: - and I'm totally wierded out by the whole thing!
