Please keep posting pictures of her. I just adore her!
Unfortunately, Maud, my oldest golden (11.5), is entering the latter stages of DM. My husband thinks it's time to let her go, but there's still that sparkle in her eyes. Her mobility is really getting bad, although sometimes she surprises us. Definitely within the next six months we are going to have to let her go.
My first gsd was diagnosed with DM at the age of 11 and lived to 14. She let me know when it was time to say goodbye when she gave me The Look. I had the greatest sense of peace as we both prepared to say goodbye. She taught me so much in the short time we had her.

My favorite picture of Kali as a puppy.
Kali still hasn't grown into those ears!
In my research, I saw that GSDs are prone to DM. Your sweetie looks like she adapted well to her wheels! Did she lose control of her bladder at any point?
Maud first started showing signs of it when she was around five. First, the weakening in the hind legs and then, occasional (now frequent) fecal incontinence.
What's DM? Sounds like hip dysplasia. My mom had a golden retriever with hip dysplasia. She died at age 6.
What's GSD (German Shepherd Dog??)
so many questions...
Sorry, you can't take the bureaucrat out of me.
GSD=German Shepherd Dog.
DM - Degenerative Myelopathy. To put it in very simplistic (and not completely accurate terms), it's doggie MS. The dog gradually loses the use of his/her hind legs, has fecal incontinence, etc. I believe it eventually progresses to the point where they lose control of their bladder and front limbs. The dog simply cannot tell where his/her legs are because they lose feeling in them.
Apparently, they located a gene linked to it, so now breeders can test for that marker and work toward eliminating DM.
Kinda reminds me of this (but MUCH cuddlier)...

this bat is one of my favorites:

the California Leaf Nosed Bat
She was on a schedule to minimize accidents and when she did have one, it was usually in her sleep. We'd play wheelbarrow out to the yard in the early morning hours to keep her happy. :) As for her wheels, she did better in the yard than in the house. Her wheel would get hung as she rounded a corner in the hall and then she'd get the most pitiful expression on her face. So during feeding time and frisbee time, she'd hop into her Doggon Wheels.
Andrea--:D :D
Bmccasland--hubby and I once rented a cabin in the woods with a hot tub on the deck. Every evening a little bat would come for a visit as we sat in the hot tub under the stars. It was so neat watching him zoom in on the insects.
Kali does help us get better reception on the t.v. :p
:d :d
Been a bit since I posted, been lurking though. :) Here is a pic of my new baby, a two year old Shar Pei, Bailey, that joined my home just this Saturday. She is amazing, loving, and chases the bunnies outside like nobody's business... :)
Hey Inv :)!!! Where ya been??? That's one cute doggie!!
Bats are cool & cute but a bit messy.
Been settling into the new home, relationship, doggie, working full time for two months and just getting healed up and better! What a year and a half. Body aches a bit for the colder riding, but can't wait for the weather to break and start rollin in the sidis again. Good to be back!
Is your new girl a rescue? Looks like she's a tripod. :) Welcome back and please keep us posted on your riding adventures as a bent rider.
She's a rescue from Operation Scarlet in Lancaster, PA. We don't even want to think about what happened to the leg. No surgery, it just got broke off the vet said, but it is ok right now and healed. She is the biggest sweety and a perfect dog for me with all my limpiness. We walk about the same speed! :) Snowing today, maybe riding by the weekend! WHOOO HOOO!!:D
I can see a trailer in the foreseeable future. :)
invsblwmn - Welcome Back!
Cute doggie too! What's her name?
Some of the rest of us are waiting for spring, and some of us are just plain slackers or whimps and have no excuse for not riding. :o
Her name is Bailey. She is now best buddies with my partner's "Bindie" a Jack Russell/Sheltie mix. The cats are not so thrilled, but they are adjusting. :)
Bailey is gorgeous!:)
I think I may have figured out what Shiloh is mixed with--English Setter. Border Collie and English Setter. I'm not very familiar with English Setters, but upon looking up the breed it makes sense. It would explain the spots, the pointing and the ears--border collie ears with English Setter fringe.
I think you should add Briard to the mix. ;) You're Shiloh is quite fetching! I could watch her all day.
Or Chesapeake Bay Retriever ;)
Tulip, is that your wood floor? It's purdy.
I managed to catch Indy lounging in the sunlight yesterday... hold on to your cute-meters:
That's so cute... the elvis look!
Hehehe... I got the tail end of a yawn for that one
Invsblwmn, Bailey and Bindie are lovely. Good luck with Bailey -- she's already lucky to be in your home.
Tulip, I love seeing Shiloh. Any progress with the reactiveness? I ask because I had a scared-of-lots-of-stuff rescue bulldog, and I love hearing stories of dogs finding their confidence.
Andrea, that's a great shot of Indy. We call those "sun puddles" and Lloyd seeks his out every morning.

We're still friends? Right?
Smurf, those are a great series of photos!
Shiloh's doing MUCH better. We've been working with a trainer and I've learned so much. He no longer balks when we're walking. He used to decide that he wanted to go THAT way and would put on the brakes not not budge. He would do that, too, when he heard children, and refused to go down streets with children, even if the children were not out--he remembers where they were.
But now he jauntily walks at my side (he's gotten alot better on the leash, too). He's still shy of people, and when we pass groups of kids waiting for the schoolbus he perks up his ears and watches them but he keeps walking. So do I, which is key. He's so interesting looking that people want to pet him. As I've gotten more confident with him, he's gotten more confident with me. I think he's starting to trust me, so he meets people when I say it's okay. He even wagged his tail when we met one of the neighborhood kids the other day.
He's also better at meeting dogs on a leash, but we're not at the point of doing that too much. He's fine with them while off leash. The trainer suggested a 15-foot leash to allow them plenty of maneuverability while meeting other dogs. It works well.
Well, the other thing if you think there's border collie, where there's border collie there's usually blue heeler. Cow dog "accidents" are pretty common depending where you live. Blue heelers have a pretty dominant color pattern and Shiloh is sure sporting it. You can get a DIY DNA kit for anywhere from $100-$150. If you're the curious. I'm dying to know what Lucky is but for that kind of money I'm happy just to love her.
That was the first guess, but I'm not convinced. First off, blue heelers do have brown in them, usually on their legs. Not a smidgen here. And they have short coats, but Shiloh's is not really short. And the ears, well, they are what they are. He also has huge paws, and blue heelers typically have very small paws for some reason. Image Google English Setter and you'll see the resemblance in alot of ways. On the other hand, he has a rather dingo-ish bark-howl thing.
A DNA test would settle it, but I'm not going to spend the money now, and I rather like speculating. Plus, the DNA tests will probably tell me he's part Shizu or something.
And another thing, Shiloh's from Texas. So I figure there's all sorts of hunting dogs in Texas (and cowdogs, and sheepdogs...)
Great snaps Sundial!
I love the second snap it gave me my first smile for the day.:)
