Good for you for exercising instead of hitting up the junk food. Sorry to hear about your loss. However, it sounds like you inherited some good, sturdy genes.

Had 2 quite bad 5Ks Thursday and today. I don't know if it is the cold temperature or something else, but I have a hard time running atm.
...and I somehow won my age group! I've done that before, but only when there's been only 1 or 2 of us; official results aren't posted yet, but there were a lot more than 3 of us in our late 30's running. 5k, in about 25:55; lost some time trying to retie my shoe with gloves on. And mile 3 was 8:00 flat, even with a steep hill and headwind. Pretty cool!
Have a good weekend, y'all!
wow, way to go skhill!
Hopefully I'll get out for a run later today ... lots to do around the house, but it's SUNNY and above freezing!
It was sunny and gorgeous out yesterday, around 41. I felt seriously guilty about not going on a ride, but, it's a pain to take the bike on and off the trainer and lug it down 4 flights of steps. So, I went for a 3 mile run. I felt good, went slowly, and only had to take 2-3 walk breaks, all for 30 seconds or less, mostly when going going up the 10% grade hill, near the end. I am so trying not to push myself. I want to start wearing my Garmin, but I am giving myself another month or so.
The stretching has been helping me tremendously. No DOMS and my hip is no worse than it is usually. I've found that wearing certain shoes is aggravating that, so I am also working on that.
I did get out for not quite 5 yesterday. My quads were a little sore, I think it's from running on the slippery surface - using my muscles differently.
Now it's pouring snow...
For those of you who run, do you find that it helps to balance out muscle weaknesses developed from cycling? I'm hoping that running will help balance out my glutes/hips/adductors some, as I find these are weaker from cycling.
Not the hips, no ... just like cycling, running all happens in the sagittal plane, and only in one direction. Weak hips can cause even more trouble for runners than they do for cyclists.
Targeted hip strengthening exercises, or yoga (or both).
What running brings that cycling doesn't is the weight bearing and impact, for strong bones.
ETA: if you wanted to add an aerobic sport to strengthen your hips, try board sports. Do NOT add a cutting sport (like soccer) until you've strengthened your hips - that's a very common way that women, especially, injure our knees (BTDT).
I went for my first snowshoe run this season (and second snowshoe run ever). WOW, is that a workout!
I don't have running snowshoes, just plain snowshoes. They are women-specific, so they are a little narrower. I didn't have a problem running in them. I averaged about 13-14 minute miles. I'm going to try and do one snowshoe run a week--weather permitting.
Hey!
I will put a race report together soon, but I ran my first 50K saturday, and I was the first female :D:D It was challenging, but great!!
Wow! Kacie, you rock! Can't wait for the report!
I'm a wuss. :o I haven't even dared try to get the car out since the big snowfall, and there's certainly no running on the roads near me (even if I were motivated ... as much as my lungs hurt after my interval session last week, I'm wondering if I haven't gotten a bit of "regular" asthma in addition to the allergic type I've known about). Nothing to do but clean house. Ugh.
Congrats, skhill!
And congrats, Kacie! Can't wait for the race report!
I ran 4.65 miles with my husband yesterday. It was POURING on us and has been for days around here. Our normal route was a no go as it was totally flooded in one area, so we did an out and back instead. It was his first rain run and while I kept telling him that running in the rain was better than riding in the rain, I don't think he really believed me...until yesterday. :D
I have to take some time off from running:( My feet have really been hurting quite a bit since last Monday. Bummer...time for the spin bike now during the weekdays and skate skiing on the weekends. Happy running to everyone.:D
I did 3 miles yesterday. It was so cold that I was wearing my summer running gear over and under my winter running gear and then my old winter trousers over my newer ones. Felt very padded but warm :)
I was hoping that the weather forecast for this morning was all wrong, and it'd be decent running conditions. Well, the forecast was all wrong; instead of 10 F it was 2 F! So it was off to the treadmill at the Y. 6 miles, in 55:55-- faster than I meant to go, but all the tvs were tuned to ESPN...
Can't wait for the race report, Kacie! That's awesome!
It was ridiculously warm in Denver - just ran 3.5 miles (longest run since July, haha) and was way too hot in a light long-sleeved tech shirt and shorts. But I finally found a group that doesn't leave me in their dust!
Ran on Sunday, again today, with mah dawg. I love that moment where we're just on a whole different plane together, it's so basic. Run, run, run, breathe. Nothing major, probably 5k-5mi. I've been busy. Back on the bandwagon!
In celebration of finishing my last paper of the semester, I ran 3 miles on the treadmill. I am fighting a cold and it appears this wasn't the best idea. I managed to do it in 34 minutes and 6 seconds, just 6 seconds longer than my 5k race I did last June. I guess I was running faster, because I did take 2 walk breaks of a couple of minutes. I think there's something wrong with the calibration of my treadmill that shows speeds slightly less than what I think of as normal, i.e. 6 mph is showing as a 9.57 mm. Who knows.
I then decided to do the Shiva Rea core workout with the 8 sets of 12 push ups. OK, as I was switching positions in the intervals, I felt a bit off, but I finished and did better than last time. Then I went to do a cool down video. As I went to move from stretching out on the stability ball, to standing, I felt dizzy, so I sat down. Of course, now I have yet to do the pigeon stretch which is what is keeping me OK with the running. So, other than the 2 cups of coffee, the Claritin, and the fact that it is fairly warm in the room where I work out at home (we have new energy saving windows that have made a huge difference in this room), not feeling that great to begin with, I think I did too much. :).
Crankin! Why do we always over-do it? Hope you feel better soon. Last week I had the stomach flu. I tried to make breakfast for our kids when I started to feel dizzy and blacked out. Landed smack on my face. Woke up a minute or so later with a mouth full of blood. I ended up with 2 black eyes, a swollen cut-up nose, split lip, and various scrapes and bruises on my face.
ANYWAYS . . .
I did speedwork on my inlaws treadmill today. Why does it seem harder to run on the treadmill than outside? The roads are covered in ice. So if I wanted to do speedwork, treadmill it had to be.
Treadmill again for me today... yuck. I'd planned on 5 or 6 miles, but at just 3 I felt wiped out. Then a brilliant thought-- it might be because I gave blood last night. So 4 miles was enough for me today...
It's warming up, and if the sleet/freezing rain holds off I might be running outside over the next few days!! but if the ice comes, who knows.
Treadmill for me last night. 4 miles while watching Star Trek. I had to speed it up in the middle of the run or the movie was going to end before I was done and I didn't want to have to run without it! I timed it just right. Credits ran while I cooled down. :D
Yikes Limewave! Feel better soon, and you too, Crankin!
Bad weather in the forecast pushed our departure date back a day, so you KNOW what I got to do with the extra time today. :D Definitely no running on the roads with snow on them, so five laps of the one-mile fitness trail again. Better than nothing. Better than dreadmill. :p
Geez, Limewave, that sounds awful. All I did was sit down and hold my head for a few seconds. But, I took my time getting in the shower, as I had thoughts of fainting in there. I did manage to get my pigeon stretch in.
The cold outside is really bothering me; I am chalking it up to not feeling well. I don't want to end up being one of those old people who complain about the cold weather. Normally, I'd be outside running or at least walking. I had to go out and buy a couple of holiday gifts this afternoon, go to Trader Joe's, and get $ from the ATM. I wish that my cold would either come out all the way, or go away. I'm occasionally sneezing, my sinuses are a little achy, and I feel achy. I have that "far away" feeling, that's driving me nuts. I hope it's from the Claritin. Early to bed tonight and no running or riding tomorrow, maybe yoga. I'm supposed to ride outside Friday, but it looks like it might be all the way up to 36.
Limewave, that sounds bad :( one wouldn't believe what can happen to you while preparing breakfast ;) Get better soon!
On my last runs, my lower calf started to hurt when I was halfway in. Nothing too bad, but noticeable. I can still feel it today, after a 2 days break. I'm not sure if it's just a little soreness or something I should take more serious. I think I'm just a bit concerned because of the many stories about Achilles-Problems I have heard.
I would hate to have to take a longer break :(
Lime, that's terrible! I hope you and Crankin are both feeling better.
The ice came last night :( and since I don't have a treadmill (I use the one at the gym when I have to) I'm putting the bike on the trainer.....Ugh!
Get better everyone!
I tried to run on tuesday. HA! THat was funny. You know how they say you should, "listen to your body?" Well, my body was clearly telling met to go home and eat chocolate. So....I did....:D
Today was my last training run before Saturday's Celtic Solstice 5-miler. Went out and did 4.1 miles in darkness, before our snow today (1-2 inches...mid-westerners, promise not to laugh!). At 2.5 miles, my Sony's battery died, and I ran the rest of the way listening only to my own labored breathing and the slap-slap-slap of my big duck feet on the pavement.
