Oooh, trying to ride herd on a bunch of academics in a forum would give me a migraine!

Much more frightening than a forum of testosterone-laden carbon-or-nothing full-kit racerboys with a chip on their shoulder!

It's not that much work to moderate when everyone is well behaved and civil. I think the larger the board, the harder it gets. Some boards have strict rules, others are looser. It helps to know your member base.

If you think that your board will have some nasty fighting--have strict rules, and stick to them. Don't let one or two members get out of hand. You'll be accused of playing favourites if someone gets banned, and a perceived favourite does the same, and doesn't get banned. As a moderator, your biggest function (after getting rid of spammers) is to be HELPFUL. Welcome people, make them feel they are adding to the depth and breadth of a board. Don't belittle people. If you need to correct someone, try to do it without sounding spiteful, or condescending.

One last thing--have a hidden forum if you are not the only moderator, and use that as a 'test' forum. Make certain that your moderators (or you) can ban someone without taking out another user or two as collateral damage. Have your moderators practice thread merges and moves, deleting threads and posts, etc.

I got called stupid once on this forum and the poster wished that one day I'd be shot and buried in a hole. Possibly this person should check out the other less moderated site and share her well wishes with others there :D

Even though one or two ladies on this forum might be nasty, I LOVE THE SUPPORT AND THE LADIES. I can't say enough good about the way most of us are respectful and helpful. This is a top notch place to be!

most of the time everyone here is considerate, kind, and sympathetic.

It's not that were women...it's that we are women who have an physical outlet that helps us remain sane.

I belong to a couple of other all women boards and civility and tact are quite often foreign concepts. :eek:

I've actually never done that. But I read a Haggadah once, and I liked the bit that (paraphrased) goes -- if I haven't cleaned it yet, I hereby declare it clean anyway!

I'm sure I would love it.......if I got it. I don't get it. But that's why I love TE, I learn sooooooo much here and everyone is so lovely and kind.

"It" is a part of the Passover seder that is called the 4 questions. They are asked by the youngest child (person) at the seder and henceforth, the story of Passover is told through the answers to the questions. The way Trek phrased her original comment she used the the language and intonation of the real questions; i.e Why is this night different from all other nights? and Why do we eat reclining on pillows this night when we eat sitting up on all other nights?
FYI
I also do not do the total cleaning out, etc before the holiday, but as it often coincides with the beginning of the good cycling weather, I will use that as an excuse, not the fact that I just never do it.
