The Paris system sounds fabulous!
This was featured in a TV news segment and I thought it was brilliant! North America needs more innovative thinking like this. OH, and more bicycles!

This is too much like forward thinking. It would get laughed out of a transportation/energy planning meeting in the US.

Yes, we have "Call-a-bike" here in Munich. I've never used it but you do see quite a few people riding them and you often come across the bikes parked in a quiet place, blinking to themselves and waiting for a new person to hire them. It seems to work quite well because they were introduced a few years ago and the scheme is still going. It's run by the German railways and a lot of the bikes are parked at the station.
