The ABC of Doping (in French, sorry)

This is a somewhat old article prepared De Mondenard, a French sports doctor, about substances used in cycling. I know some of you read at least some French and might find this interesting.

If you don't read French, well just spotting the pharmaceutical-looking terms along with the associated dates should give you an idea of what's out there...

It's slightly out of date, but culturally relevant... *sigh*

A
AMERICAN COFFEE (le café américain) : mixture énergisante très répandue au début du XX` siècle lors des cour-ses de six jours aux États-Unis. Epreuves pendant lesquelles les cyclistes restaient sur la selle près de vingt heures sur vingt-quatre. Cette boisson associant caféine, éther, cocaïne et nitroglycérine permettait aux coureurs de lutter contre les hallucinations dues au manque de sommeil.
ANTIRADAR : tout type de produit qui permet de masquer la présence de substances dopantes dans les urines.
ASSURER LE COUP : se doper juste ce qu'il faut pour tenir la distance.
AUTOROUTES (avoir des) : veines larges qui facilitent les intraveineuses. La pratique intensive du sport favorise l'élargissement des vaisseaux.
AVOINE DE PHARMACIE (marcher à l') prendre des produits dopants.

B
BIDON-PARACHUTE : suppositoires de caféine ou d'amphétamines emballés dans du papier d'aluminium et collés autour des bidons à l'aide d'un sparadrap. Dans son livre Massacre à la chaîne *, Willy Voet, l'ancien soigneur de Richard Virenque chez Festina, raconte : " A l'approche du ravitaillement, je les glissais dans les musettes. À 80 kilomètres de l'arrivée, afin de préparer le final, les coureurs n'avaient plus qu'à sauter de l'avion en s'administrant un bidon parachute. "
BILLES DE QUATRE : expression des années trente désignant des pilules de strychnine ayant le même volume (4 mm de diamètre) que les petites billes de la cuvette de direction du vélo.
BILLES DE SPRINT : trinitrine. Pour atteindre une puissance maximale, certains sprinters avalent ce stimulant car-diaque à quelques kilomètres de l'arrivée.
BOITE À LAIT : expression disparue. Voir topette.
BOMBA (la) : les amphétamines. Cette expression a été rendue célèbre par Fausto Coppi. Le champion italien des années quarante et cinquante avoua qu'il en prenait pratiquement avant chaque course.
BOMBE H : bière. Cette boisson serait idéale avant l'effort, car elle permettrait un stockage maximal du glycogène, le sucre qui alimente les muscles.
BOULONS DE 18 (marcher aux) : se doper. Dans les années cinquante, ces boulons de calibre 18 se trouvaient sur les moteurs de 4 CV, une voiture beaucoup plus rapide qu'un homme à vélo. Aujourd'hui, " rouler comme une 4 CV " signifie se traîner.
BOURRER LE CANON : se doper au maximum.
BROUILLARD CHIMIQUE : produit masquant dans l'urine la présence d'une substance dopante.
BRUTAL : nom donné au vin rouge par Émile Georget, spécialiste du Bol d'Or, une épreuve d'endurance qu'il a rem-portée à neuf reprises entre 1903 et 1919: " Je marche au brutal ", répétait-il à l'envi.

C
CHAPERON ROUGE (petit) : Déca-Durabolin. Ce stéroïde anabolisant injectable est contenu dans un flacon fermé par un bouchon rouge. Très utilisé lors des entraînements, il permet une plus grande résistance à l'effort.
CHARGEURS RÉUNIS : soigneurs. L'expression, clin d'oeil à la compagnie maritime du même nom, est apparue au sein du peloton dans les années cinquante.
CHAUDIÈRE (faire exploser la) : utiliser des produits dopants et augmenter la dose à mesure que leurs effets diminuent.
COCA DES INCAS : potion à base de cocaïne consommée dès 1892 et destinée à permettre un démarrage fou-droyant.
CORNUES PÉDALANTES : cyclistes dopés. Expression employée par Daniel Delegove, le président du tribunal de Lille, lors du procès Festina en octobre 2000.

D
DOPING TO LOSE : méthode consistant à administrer à un concurrent des substances diminuant ses capacités physiques.
DOUBLE FACE: technique de substitution d'urine inventée par Willy Voet. Le soigneur, dans la caravane ou le local du contrôle antidopage, collait, à l'insu des officiels, un flacon d'urine vierge muni d'un sparadrap double face dans le dos des coureurs. Le tricheur entrait à reculons dans les toilettes et procédait à la substitution.

E
EAU CLAIRE (marcher à I’). n'avoir usé d'aucun expédient ni produit dopant.
ENGRAIS MUSCULAIRES : toutes sortes de stéroïdes anabolisants.

F
FEUX (pousser les) : augmenter la charge de produits dopants.
FRIANDISES DU "DOCTEUR X" : cocktail dopant d'un célèbre médecin espagnol des années quatre-vingt-dix qui mélangeait cortisone, ACTH (le synacthen, indécelable au contrôle antidopage), stimule les glandes surrénales et hormone mâle.

G
GRAND ASSASSIN : le champagne. Cette boisson, utilisée depuis plus d'un siècle, permet de désinhiber le cycliste lors de la périlleuse descente d'un col. Hélas, après une courte euphorie, le coureur trinque. Seul avantage: le cham-pagne est autorisé par les instances internationales.

H
HALT SCHLAFEN : de l'allemand " halte au sommeil ". Surnom des amphétamines donné par les équipes d'outre Rhin dans les années cinquante.

K
KÉKÉ : Kenacort Retard 80. Ce corticoïde, très répandu au début des armées 90, a un effet euphorisant.

L
LICHETTE (se mettre une) : prendre un " petit supplément de produits dopants ".
LUBRIFIANT : un bon lubrifiant désigne un dopant efficace.

M
MAX : Maxiton. Les coureurs ont coutume de donner aussi des surnoms aux amphétamines. Ainsi, le Mératran devient " Mémé "; la Ritaline : " Riri " ; le Pervitin : " Tintin " et le Tonédron : " Tonton ".
MILLION (un) : dose injectable d'un millilitre.
MISE EN PLACE : un protocole de dopage destiné à une course que l'on a spécialement préparée dans le but de jouer les premiers rôles.
MULE (charger la..., être chargé comme une...) : prendre des produits dopants en quantité anormalement impor-tante. Une pratique fréquente utilisée par des coureurs dont la condition physique est précaire.

OEUFS DE PÂQUES: testostérone orale (Pantestone) conditionnée sous forme de capsules brun rougeâtre, ressem-blant à des neufs en chocolat

P
PETIT DÉJEUNER DES CHAMPIONS : prise d'anabolisants le matin d'un entraînement ou d'une course.
PHARES (allumer les) : s'emploie pour un coureur qui a sûrement fait appel à des subterfuges. Son regard, au moment du départ, ne trompe pas.
PHARMACIEN : définition du soigneur datant de 1911.
PISSETTE (la) : le contrôle antidopage.
POT BELGE : la bombe atomique du dopage. Un mélange explosif d'une dizaine de produits : amphétamines, caféine, cocaïne, héroïne, antalgiques, corticoïdes...
PRÉPARÉ (être) : être dopé.

SALER LA SOUPE : synonyme de faire exploser la chaudière.
SÉRUM DE SINGE : hormone de croissance extractive recueillie sur des cadavres.
SOIGNEUR : " Infirmier, valet de chambre de l'athlète. Le soigneur accomplit les petites besognes utiles, [préparation des topettes, NDLR] dont il tire un maigre profit mais une grande gloire quand l'athlète sort vainqueur. Le soigneur se fait remarquer par son désir constant d'être fixé en photographie. " Définition tirée du " Petit lexique à l'usage des sportifs " paru dans Match L'Intran du 14 juillet 1936.

T
TOPETTE (contenant et contenu) : petit bidon plat en aluminium contenant la plupart du temps un stimulant. Venu du langage picard (même racine que toupie), le mot désignait une petite bouteille longue et étroite. Aujourd'hui, elle a pris la forme d'un flacon plat qui se glisse facilement dans une poche dorsale de maillot cycliste. On en trouve même en vente dans certains magasins de cycles.

V
VENIN (le) : liquide au goût âcre consommé quelques kilomètres avant l'arrivée et qui a pour but de masquer la prise de dopants.
VITAMINE E : érythropoïétine, la célèbre EPO. Cette substance favorise l'oxygénation sanguine. "Avant l'EPO, je faisais du vélo. Avec l'EPO, j'ai eu l'impression de faire de la Mobylette ", expliquera en 1999 Erwan Menthéour, un des rares cyclistes à s'être repenti.
VITAMINE G : hormone de croissance. Ce nom de code était utilisé dans l'équipe Deutsche Telekom à la fin des an-nées quatre-vingt-dix.

W
WARNED OFF ALL TRACKS : " interdit sur tous les vélodromes ". Cette inscription prohibant l'usage de stupéfiants figurait à l'entrée des stades anglais dès le début du vingtième siècle.

Y
YEUX EN BOULE DE LOTO : le journal sportif L'Auto donne la définition dès 1924 : "Yeux fixes et exorbités sous l'influence d'excitants ".
YEUX DANS LES COINS : expression contemporaine désignant la présence de comprimés d'amphétamines introduits dans des pâtes de fruits. Dans Massacre à la chaîne, Willy Voet raconte : " Nous nous amusions à les planter en guise d'yeux, avec un nez en prime, si le coureur en voulait trois. J'ai connu des cyclistes qui allaient jusqu'à 100 milligrammes d'amphétamines par jour, dans ce cas, nous dessinions de véritables squelettes sur la friandise. "
YEUX DE LANGOUSTE : expression imagée tirée du Miroir des sports du 4 novembre 1965. C'est le cycliste Lucien Teisseire qui l'utilise pour désigner les coureurs dopés dont " les yeux leur sortaient de la tête. "
