I'm stuck in the middle ring on my road bike. When I try to shift up or down, the derailleur moves, but not far enough - the chain just rubs wickedly and doesn't actually shift. I noticed the problem afeter cleaning and relubing a couple of days ago, but it could have been that way a while as I've only been using the roadie for the commute to work recently and I barely ever change gear at all for that as it is a short, flat ride.
Any ideas? :confused:
Is your front shifting indexed? Most likely the cable has gotten slack and you need to tighten the adjusting barrel. Also check the derailleur limit screws. Full instructions here.
I need more pictures and less words! I suspect it's cable tension rather than limit screws, seeing as shifting is equally buggered in both directions. Now I just have to figure out which bit is the adjusting barrel. :p I'll have a fidget some time I'm feeling adventurous - guess I can't make things too much worse... :o Cheers. :)
The adjusting barrel is a thing that the cable housing stops at which can screw. It could be located where the cable from the levers meets the frame or it could be where the cable enters the derailleur. Turn it so that it sticks out more.Quote:

Best bet is disconnect cable from derailleur and start from scratch. Also make sure the shifter itself is operating in its fullest range.
Thanks for the help, ladies. I have found a free maintenance workshop run by a local club/cycle advocacy group which is not only nearby, but also next happening this Saturday. I shall most certainly be taking advantage of it. :D
