View Full Version : Bike Chain Tattoo
I see there is some interest in my tattoo idea. Great!!! General question for you out there because I am grappling with this myself:
Would people prefer an actual picture of a duraace chain glued onto their arm (or ankle or whatever) or would they prefer something that looks like a tattoo artist actually did it. Specifically it would be black or that tattoo greeny-black color and it would be a rendition of a chain, not a photo. Possibly/hopefully able to fool people into thinking it's real.
Thoughts?
I am going to try to attach the a photo of the two things I am choosing between.
PS Admin, what are the rules about selling stuff? I don't want to break them. This is potentially not a one-time deal like selling my bike was. I am NOT going to advertise ever.
OK. Here is the photo version. A slightly dirty duraace chain.

I think one that looked like an actual tattoo would be cool. I want to get one for DH for Christmas.

My vote would be for the one that looks like an actual tattoo.
I would love to have one. I am always going on about how much i hate tattoos and would never get one because I am commitment phobic:D Temporary is PERFECT!

I won't ever get a real tatoo because I hate needles and I know there will be a time in my life where it just isn't so cool anymore. However, with that said, I have thought if I was to ever get a tatoo, it would be a bike chain around my ankle. Basically, what I'm saying is yeah to your idea! I would so get a temporary chain tatoo. I vote for one that looks like a tatoo, not a picture of an actual chain.

My friends and I were looking for bike related temp tatoos for LRRH (they were not to be found :( ). This would have been (and still would be) perfect! I vote for the real-look tatoo, too.
I was really leaning for the real look too. I have searched and searched for a great looking bike chain tattoo and have never found it. So I am going to make it myself!! I hope.
I would love to get a real tattoo but it is NEVER going to happen. I am way too afraid of the pain/infection/scar...plus way way too afraid of the commitment. So temporary it is. I'll let everyone know when they have arrived.

Hey Doc, selling your bike here was a GOOD thing - and I'm very grateful!!:D
I can now ride without the hand swelling - yeah! And I would be very interested in the tatoos as well. Great stocking stuffers (so what if I stuff my own stocking - I'm never disappointed!).

I would like one too.
Me too! I vote for looks like a tatoo, not a picture. I would get one for my 70 year old mom, too. She just recently cut way back on her cycling! :D

Actually, come to think of it, a temporary tat would be fun to freak my boss out with. :D On the other hand, if she didn't freak out, then I know I could get the real thing AND keep my job! OK! Make my vote for looking like the real thing. :D bikerHen

I would totally be interested in a bike chain tatoo that looks like a real tatoo! That would be so much fun!! In fact, I can think of a few of the guys I ride with that might want one as well.... ;)

I'd like to have one to freak out my students! I have a couple of actual tatts, but in places that only DH and I get to see. But this chain tattoo would be a fun thing to wear so it's plainly visible.

I'm voting for tattoo-style, too, because after wearing them enough, one could decide if they wanted to get a real one and have an accurate mental image... ;)

I actually joined the forum because I was searching for bike chain tattoos and this thread came up! I've just started biking again, and rode my first 1/2 century (almost - 48 miles, 2 summits!) a week ago! I am riding on my mountain bike (no road bike yet) with no pedal clips and I have scars on my right leg from getting clipped by the spiky pedals... enough that I joked I should get a tattoo around my ankle to hide them :) Then I started thinking how cool a bike chain tattoo would be, and that I should get one after I ride my first century - maybe next year :)
And of course, temporary would be perfect!
Do you still have them?

Actually I got one that was a glittery gear stack with LRRH in the middle as a temp tatoo the evening before at the dinner. Maybe they sold out-
On the first cross country I did, one of the ladies had a whole book of tear out bike related temporary tatoos that she periodically passed around. She couldn't or wouldn't remember where she got it, but I could see a whole business there.
I would buy a bunch of temporary tatoos bike chains anytime just to stuff my stocking, and to have on hand for fun times.

I would wear a temporary bike chain tattoo around my neck as a chocker and maybe have the tail end look like it was falling down into my cleavage! This is Portland after all and I already stand out among the youth oriented bike crowd due to lack of piercings and tattoos (also no beard.....that's an observation- lots of facial hair with the bike crowd).

I get a bike chain tattoo nearly every time I ride! :D

I get one almost every time I ride, too. But I've been riding for 6 years, so it's not a novice thing- it's a right foot clipping out thing. Most people I know unclip with their left foot down- I put my right foot down (since I'm left side dominant) so it's on the drivetrain side and therefore more apt to get tattooed. ;)
I would LOVE to get a chainring tattoo (permanent- not just temporary).
I'd want it to bend around a bit, like my usual Chain Stain. I think it's a cool idea.

Yes, my right calf seems to get most of my greasy chain tattoos!
@radacrider, your tattoo is beautiful!

I've often thought that for the long-distance tourers among us, a permanent bike chain tattoo with the name of each state (or country) you toured through would be appropriate. My chain would be embarrassingly short, sadly enough.
As for the temporary tattoos, I'd enjoy having a book of them. Sometimes, you just need a bike chain necklace with the free end heading south. (Love that idea)

Just wanted to post back here with a pic of my temporary tattoo! It was really fun to have for a while, and when I posted the picture on Facebook, all my friends thought it was real :) Not sure how to size the photos, so it might be huge - sorry about that! Thank you so much to "doc" for sending them!

Another right unclipper with nearly permanent chain grease tatto on my right leg.
Would love to have a bunch of temporary ones. Real one, unfortunately, are beyond the pale according to my husband and children and on my upbringing.

I am another right unclipper...but somehow have learned how to avoid the chain when stopping. I didn't realize that until reading this. I like the idea of a real tatoo though, may have to look into this. Then again, I don't heal as easily as I once did so perhaps a temporary would be better.

There are lots of places online that will make custom temporary tattoos - I found this one that has the chain ring grease mark - haha: http://www.tatsandtags.com/bicycle-tattoos-2.html It also has 3 pages of other cycling related temporary tattoos. Here's what the chain grease tattoo looks like:
