View Full Version : I think I may have gone too far ...

Hi Ladies,

Today was my second ride since my accident in May. (The doctor says that my fracture is healed enough that I can't screw it up further and that I have to start riding to try to get my cartilage to go back to it's original shape.) My first ride was really short and sort of in the neighborhood. Today I rode about 17 miles. I was going along just fine and even doing 15-16 mph on the flats. But then I hit my first climb since May -- about 800 feet over a mile. Not a super big climb, I know, but it's a start.

Anyways, I'm huffing and puffing up this climb as slow as molassis, but at least I'm moving (I lost all of my cardio!). Then this guy comes up along side of me. He starts calling me Babe and is all Rico Suave with me. Of course, he's a total Lance wannabe -- Trek Madone with the Discover Channel paint scheme, full Discovery Channel kit, Gyro Atmos in team colors, Discover Channel water bottle and, of course, a pair of Oakley's identical to Lance's. He starts telling me that if I ride with him, he can teach me how to be a real cyclist but that I was doing OK for a beginner. He was so condescending and kept calling me Babe and Hon. I kept answering with grunts and one syllable answers as he kept talking hoping that he'd get the hint and leave me alone.

We finally got to the top, and I decided that I was going to drop this guy. I stopped at a light and waited to make a left hand turn. He wanted me to keep continue straight with him so that he could "teach me a little bit about cycling" and I told him that I had to get home. He then suggested that we ride together tomorrow, again so that he could teach me somehting. The light turned green and as I was taking off I said "Thanks, but my doctor promises me that I'll be riding just fine again as soon as my leg isn't broken any more!". I looked over my shoulder after I completed the turn and he was standing there with his jaw dropped. I then hit 38 mph on the descent and even passed a car (while I was in the bike lane -- no sense being stupid).

Was I too *****y to this guy?

I want to see the look on his face when your leg is healed and you pass the posing POS on the same climb. "Hi there, remember me honey? I'm feeling much better now" :p

Now THAT is motivation to train. :)

Rock on Susie! What a jerk! (I wanted to say something else, but I am sure all of us can fill in the blank.) But what is even better is that there is someone out there better then him (You, when you are well and others) and you were probably the first person he could talk down to. Glad you stood up for yourself and I hope you are feeling better soon!:D

Wow, Susie!
I marvel at your restraint!
I would have told him to do something that is biologically impossible for him!!!
But your comment to him was right on!

If anything you were too nice. I agree with everyone, train, get better and then drop his punk *** on the climb. And do it with a smile. :D

Well restrained , sister
My motto is "Don't give 'em *any* energy" ie not even negative energy

Well ridden, btw and keep it up!

You were far more polite to that jerk than I would have been!

I was on a group ride many years ago & we were climbing a pretty big hill. The guy next to me put his hand on my lower back (to help me up) - except I was having NO problem with the hill.

I snarled at him, "GET YOUR HAND OFF OF ME!"

Condescending jerks.

I agree wholeheartedly with the general consensus so far. I think your response was just right. The restrained but witty comeback is even more cutting than an emotional response--gets your point across without letting the jerk know how much he pissed you off.

I hate it when guys just assume you want/need their help, without knowing you or even asking. And that "babe" crap, when he doesn't even know you--jeez, I've got steam coming out of my ears and I wasn't even there! You did great!

Slime was just trying to cop a feel. Why do they not understand the whole "time and place for everything" concept?

That is so great! I really hope I'm not offending anyone here, but the men who ride those Trek Discovery Channel bikes are such tools! I know one or two guys that ride them and they sound exactly like the guy you described...condescending wannabes.

You said the best thing possible, I think it's hysterical...good for you!
