It is good to mix things up from time to time, and I like the new look!

Also, 90 seconds between posts? I get the spam prevention thing, but given that I type pretty quickly...

Yes, we've jumped a couple of generations ahead -- from version 3.8 to version 4.2 (skipping 4.0, 4.1). I'm still working out the kinks and am open to suggestions on styling/colorscheme.

As for the 90 second limit, it was 60 seconds, but the spammers have been hammering us hard lately so we are playing with settings to see if we can slow them down.

I am still trying to figure out where the other parts of the forum are - gotta be there somewhere ;) I like the new color scheme! Thanks to the Jim and the administrators for all of the work and effort put into this site, you are all awesome!

Is the drop down menu at the bottom the only way to access the forums other than General Discussion? I am probably looking right at it...going to go and clean my glasses ;)

Yeah ... maybe with more dinner and less beer I'd have found my way back to the threaded view by now, but I can't find it. And when I do find it, I still hate having to change a bookmark to get to the same(-ish) page that my bookmark used to take me to. I get you need to update the software periodically, but a FAQ for chronic users might be helpful, especially if that FAQ is somewhere I could find it...

Hi Oakleaf,

I believe you switch to threaded view by:

click on SETTINGS (upper right-hand corner of page)
then My Settings > My Account > General Settings
then scroll down awhile to "Thread Display Options"
then select "Threaded" from Thread Display Mode.

I don't think you'll need to change your bookmark...

I hate this kind of change.
When I clicked on my bookmark, I thought I was on drugs. It took me to some weird part of the forum, like Activity record. But, when I logged in, it brought me back to the threaded view I've always had it set on.
It's just the visual change that is hard for me to get used to. I don't use any of the fancy stuff.
I got the Tapatalk for my I Phone, but, I found it very difficult to use. I just access TE from my bookmarks and it's fine.

One thing I noticed on my iPhone (it's less apparent on the desktop) is that the titles of threads are really small in comparison to the "started by" and time/date information. It makes it hard to read and hard to tap the title rather than the poster's name. If anybody sees my name listed for who has viewed their profile, that's probably why!

"New Posts" is in the upper left, right under "What's New?"

I find the new format harder to read because the type is so small. Just as well, I shouldn't spend so much time on the forum anyways, as I do actually have a Real Life. I'm sure it's more functional, though, and that's a good thing. 90-seconds between posts is completely reasonable. I hate hackers.

In the lower left corner there is a "style" dropdown that I can populate with different styles. Right now there is a default and a mobile style -- mobile users who don't use Tapatalk, you can choose the mobile style for less clutter and bigger fonts. I'll look into finding / building some alternate styles that address some of the concerns being raised (font size, contrast, etc).

I think the orange appears once a thread goes beyond one page. Another forum I post on gets a little flame once it gets to a certain number of posts. I think this is similar. One pagers the envelope is blue, more than one, orange.

Except I now see ones that are orange and not multiple pages. So.... never mind. :)

I should add that the UI for the individual threads is easy enough to read, and pretty similar to before. The pages that list threads are the ones that are harder for me. They seem kinda busy, and the thread titles don't stand out as much as I'd like.

For me the font when the "new forum" first went live was very nice (tho I can't remember how it looked now). Now it is all scrunched up (not enough spacing between the lines), like instead of single-spaced lines, it seems more like less than single spaced. Anyone else see this? It just looks really busy and is tiring to my 51-year old eyes!

I'm reading on a standard laptop, not a mobile device. Is there any option for the user to modify the font displayed herself?

Oakleaf,

When you click on the "Forums" tab, you should see all the individual forums and sub-forums in an expanded view -- meaning all the subforums are shown by default. You can collapse each major forum by using the "+" or "up/down arrow" located to the far right of the color bar on each major forum. I believe this is what you are referring to as threaded at the top level? (expand/collapse the heiarchy of forums?)

Sequential at the posts level is controllable in your user profile.

Thx,
Jeff

I'm bugged by having to click to get to a log in

My browser is showing a bit of loose Javascript at the top of the forums home page ( forums.teamestrogen.com/forum.php ). The code is:

'); var sidebar_align = 'right'; var content_container_margin = parseInt('290px'); var sidebar_width = parseInt('270px'); //-->

I'm running an ancient version of Firefox - version 3.0 I think - on MacOSX. The visible code is present in both the Luburox and vB4 Default styles.

Edit: Looking at the "page source", the line before the loose Javascript is a document.write which generates a line of Javascript. It appears that my browser treats the /script in the function arguments as the end of the Javascipt block - thus causing the var lines to be treated as plain html text.

Hi Crankin,

The primary reason behind the upgrade is to stay on the current version so we can continue to get security updates.

There isn't much in the way of new functionality that we are using (there is a "blogging" feature and some Facebook integration that I haven't turned on -- it can post to your facebook page whenever you post here -- didn't think anyone would really want that!)

Please let me know if this keeps happening to posts you read going forward. A few hours ago I, in an effort to get "ignored threads" working, I switched a setting to keep track of read posts in the database instead of using a cookie file on your computer. That change is probably what is causing the behavior you are seeing. However, posts you read going forward from now should properly get marked as read - let me know if they don't!

I've noticed the list being "1 to 17 of 23" and then there's no link to a second page. Or - the first page will say "1 to 25 of 34" and the second page has just three topics and says "26 to 28 of 34".

You probably hit the magic number of new posts where you were offered a link to the second page, but there really weren't any posts to show on that page.

The Ignore Thread is appearing in some themes, but not others. It works in VB4Default and Blue Theme, but not in any of the Luburox themes. You can switch to Blue Theme, ignore the thread, and then switch back to Luburox and the thread should still be ignored. I haven't been able to figure out yet why it isn't working properly in the Luburox themes.

I have a different issue that cropped up with the new forum. It's not a "bug" but just something that bugs me. When I go to the forum, I always click on "New Posts". In the old forum, that would only show me threads with new posts since my last visit. Now, in addition (and following) those, I get a whole slew of posts under "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts." Is there any way to turn that off. If I didn't read them before, I don't want to read 'em this time around either. It makes my "new posts" search go on for page after page.

Minor, I know, but just one of those niggling little changes I don't care for.

Thanks!

The only way I've found around that Emily is to read the ones that are new that I want to read and the click to mark all posts read. That's the only work-around to that aspect that I've figured out.

Thanks, Possegal! I never used to have to do that so didn't even think of it. I will give it a try.

I really haven't been following this thread, so apologies if someone has posted before, but sometimes when I post a quick reply, I will get the error message "do you really want to navigate away from this page?" It's intermittent and I haven't identified anything that says when it will do that and when it won't. I'm on MacOS 10.6.8 and Firefox 15.0.1.

ETA - it did it this time. ;)

Emily,

New posts since your last visit are at the top of page 1 - everything after the "threads below" marker can be ignored. Unless I'm misunderstanding something, you shouldn't have to go on page-after-page ???

No, you're not misunderstanding. It's just a small annoyance since it never did that before the forum changes that I recall. However, thanks to the tip above, I just did a "mark all read" and it went away. It's just a preference, not a bug at all. Thanks, Jeff, for checking!

Me too -- with Windows 7, Chrome browser. It's after my post goes through successfully, though it doesn't look like it did. If I click "Stay on this page", it then warns me that I can't post again for 45 seconds. But I didn't try to post again. This entire sequence does appear to be some sort of bug with the "Post Quick Reply". Just happened to me above when I posted the reply to Jeff.

OK, I just had that problem, as Emily described. I rarely use the Quick Reply, but I just did.
Using Chrome with Mac 10.8.2

I've had this happen quite a few times in the last couple of days as well. Chrome and Firefox, Windows 7 64-bit if it matters.

Still only get the first page of recent posts and nothing shows up if I click to go to the next page. As a result I miss a lot of recent posts.

Goldfinch, what browser, OS and skin are you using? (ex: IE7, Windows 7, Luburox Blue)
