About four and a half yesterday, just testing out a new lacing pattern for my shoes (it didn't really help, but wasn't bad), and 11 today. Dang it's hot and humid. I really meant to get out before the hottest part of the day, but I watched the MotoGP race, then had to get my laundry hung out, procrastinated a little, and before I knew it it was nearly noon. I couldn't decide whether to do the 12-mile loop that I didn't feel quite in shape or heat-acclimated enough to try, or a shorter one, so I set off on the 12-miler, but walked the rest of the way in once I'd got halfway up my road. Felt pretty much all right. But I still can't decide about Columbus marathon. :(

Well, it finally decided to become summer here in the Southwest. All next week the highs will be over 100 degrees F. So needless to say, I have not been doing my early AM runs. We get up about 5 am but even then the low is 75-80:eek: I'm having a hard enough time staying hydrated during the day when I'm inside in the AC.
I'm hoping that maybe by August the temps won't be so bad. I could be totally wrong on this hope. But there is always hope, right? If its cool, strangley enough, I don't mind getting out there and running or fast hiking in my case.

Red Rock, have you considered run/hiking at night? I love running at night in the summer. But then I love to run in the dark in the winter, too. Go figure.
I'm running a little, not much. Still rehabbing the leg but it's getting better. I'm on the wait list for a 50k in August but I'm thinking that, if I do get in, I will decline to run and just volunteer instead. I've been doing short bike rides in between my short runs, and while it's been nice to do something different, it's not helping my fitness for running 50k in a month.
I hate getting out of running shape!

Went for a trail run yesterday. It was hot, but I had enough water, so I was OK. It's nice to finally have some snow-free trails.

Ok, have not been posting much lately. Training plan is been sporadic lately do to a few things and I am in crunch mode (more on that later). Just wanted to share that I did the Peachtree Road Race 10K in Hotlanta this July 4th. Me and 55,000+ people. It was awesome. Super organized. Yes it was hot, but not unbareable. I was running w/ my SO, so it was a slower pace than I normally run, that may of been why it was so enjoyable. Had a great time, would definitely do it again! If it is on anyone's bucket list...then do it!
Work schedule sucks this week and I am doing OT, so my running schedule is not so great. 44 days til PPA (OMG ). Just doing 12 this Saturday and then get back to the grueling TM incline and hill repeats next week.

So my heel pain has only gotten worse even though I keep taking a lot of days off and doing easy trail runs. I think I am going to have to quit running for awhile! Guess I'll just have to bike more for now. :D

Intervals on Tuesday, and an easy four today. I'm getting the feeling it's the air quality I'm struggling with as much or more than the heat. :( Not sure what to do about that. I HATE air conditioning and I HATE cardio machines.
Lime, that stinks. Hope you get it sorted - good thing you still have the bike!
Kat, 55,000 people in a 5K? I can't even imagine that! Do they send you off in waves? Have the last people started before the first ones finish???

Lime, have you tried icing your foot/heel? I have had some arch going heel pain. When it was really bad I was icing after runs. And don't forget your anti inflammatories like ibuprofen or naproxyn...take them on a regular schedule.
Oak, it was a 10K & trek think a full alphabet of waves. Tons of people finishing well after we did and my group was L. But very fun. I even had a small Dixie cup of beer on the run!

It's hot. Really hot. I woke up sweaty this morning it was so hot (no central air, and the window unit's in the living room). But I ran anyway... Seems that it was "replace your toilet" weekend in the neighborhood-- there were 3 out at the curb in the mile loop I was using. Ended up doing a slow 3 miles. It's slow or not at all on a morning like this...

I went out this AM and had a good four miles on the trail. I can tell I have not done anything for a few weeks, that is for sure. I'm hoping to go out at least four days this week, now that I am getting a little more familiar and comfortable with this running at night.
Twenty seems like a lot for a week for me but I hope to get there.

Steamy 6 mile hilly run on Sun morning. It was a good bit of shade on my route but the humidity made it soooo sticky! I was literally dripping wet and unfortunately started developing a blister which cut the run short :(

So I did my 12 miles on Saturday. First half wasn't too bad then the heat really kicked my butt. Then I did 5 minutes of step ups on a weight bench...ouch! But the end the PPA is like steps so I need to be ready!
Today was 6 miles of "hill" (bridge) repeats. Near the end I though I would burst into flames...no from my speed but the heat! Once the sun comes up it is brutal. I know everyone right now is experiencing this heat. Whew!
Not sure how the heat and humidity will translate into making me "tough" and "fit" for the ascent on Pikes Peak...I am sure the incline and lack of O2 will make me suffer even more! I think it is 38 days to go. So a couple more weeks of pushing myself in my training (although I think it is getting to be too late for that!) and then a nice taper. OMG

I got out for a fairly flat 9 miles after a few days of running around like a chicken with my head cut off ... It was a little bit cooler than it's been, but my breathing still wasn't the best. I'm about resigned to running the half in Columbus this fall, but still haven't made a final decision.

With the summer heat, and the recognition that I am still such a new runner that I still need to build my "base" rather than work on things like speed work (that will come in time....I'm focused on injury prevention and stamina right now), I've started to run even more slowly than usual.
I'm using this article from Active (http://www.active.com/running/Articles/The-Benefits-of-Running-Slow.htm?cmp=291&memberid=111237012&lyrisid=22364923) as my ...justification? Guide? What?
And I've been thinking about HR rates....Staying in Zone 2 for some runs, Zone 3 for others. And THAT sure makes me run slowly. I often say, I have a heart like a bird....for the same effort, my running/biking partner and I will have vastly different HR's - mine much higher. Doesn't matter if the partner is male/female/younger/older. Just me.
So last night - after a 15 mile bike commute day - I went out for my 4 mile loop. After a warm up (although I don't know why I bothered with that - I figure I was plenty warmed up from the bike ride), I kept it in Zone 3, then a cool down. I refuse to be frustrated by my glacial pace. I keep thinking "I could do this SO much faster on a bike!" I figure/hope I'll be rewarded with fitness and speed come those October-December races.

7Rider, I have a high HR, too. It's always higher than everyone else's, when I am riding or running. It's low when resting, though.
I stopped wearing my HR monitor because of this.
I haven't run in 2 weeks, because I've been riding so much, since it got warm out. Getting ready to go out and ride and now, after reading this thread, I want to go on a trail run.
We shall see. I'll never be a runner on this schedule (that, and the fact I am slower than slow).

7rider, don't feel like the loan ranger going slow. That is what I'm doing. I had my first week of actual mileage. Today makes 16 miles for the week. I can not think of when I did that last.
These runs/hikes are on the trail so that makes me feel that much better. I just hope I will be able to loose some of this weight I have aquired since this whole thyroid thing came up about a year or so ago now. But I have to run 35 miles to loose 3500 calories or one pound. So this could take awhile.
I am trying to eat more proteins, fewer carbs (WW when I do), and more veggies and fruit intake. Lots of water and zero carbonated drinks. I do crystal light now and then.
Thanks for making me accountable to you all. I hope next week is as good as this week has been.

Mile repeats for me today - first time since the fall. I really wanted to go for distance instead, but the respite from the heat is just about over and I knew I needed to get some speedwork in while my lungs can handle the air.
I obviously don't remember how to hold a 5K pace ... so this was obviously the workout I really needed to do today.

I blew off yesterday and did another flattish 9 miler this morning.
"Flat" around here means right around 500 feet of climbing in 9 miles, and nothing over 10% except the very first hill after I turn out of my lane, which isn't long. I have only this one loop I can do that's this flat. I've realized that my bad habit habit of throwing my head back comes from always running hills ... on an ascent, I want to look at something besides the road two feet in front of me. I'm going to try to roll my eyes up more, and see if that helps.
I've also realized that I'm just not going to be ready to do Columbus marathon in any time that would make it worth it to me. I'm inclined to run the half just so I won't be sitting home on race day - but I need to convince myself that it's worth the effort to run a support race, or to do "half" of anything. I also have to decide whether or not to sign up for Disney ... there are a whole lot of downsides to that one, and the guy at the LRS pretty much talked me out of it the other day, but now I'm back to being on the fence.

Went from deciding not to run a trail race yesterday, to agreeing to the 5k, to running the 10k (and I haven't run more than 3 at a time in, oh, 6 weeks?)
Great race. Beat my last 10K trail time by 5 minutes and made an awesome friend with a woman who lives 1500 miles from me :)
I'm still pretty giddy!

14 miler today. Hot, but not as humid I think. I felt pretty good. Picked up to a respectable pace at time. I will do 18 miles on Saturday and then I taper. Of course these are still FLAT miles. (that is why I am running longer than 13.3 miles which is the actual distance of the race) PPA is in 32 days...yes about 1 month. No, not ready. But will I ever be? So as part of my taper I plan to spend more time on TM at incline w/ super slow jog (i.e. "slog") or walk. I feel I have not put in enough TM time w/ high incline. In realization that I will be walking MOST (if not all) of the ascent. This week I am conquering all my doubt that happened past couple weeks. I am not fast, never have been. But this may be an advantage mentally for me when I hit the incline of the mountain. I have already just planned to walk as hard/fast as I can and thow in a "jog" here and there. I can do this. (I will keep saying that). I have 6 1/2 hours...(still ignoring the fact that there is no oxygen up there!)
Oh yeah, and on Monday (we will still be there) is the Pro Cycling event starting there (forgot the official name). So I will get to see some of the pro's. I mean it will be a little "vacation" except for the one day of possible hell!:p

Way to go, jessmarimba! What a great, spur of the moment race!
Here, it's hot. Very hot. I hoped the treadmill at the gym might be more comfortable; maybe, but I don't like resorting to the treadmill. But this morning, it was so icky out that I only did one token mile.
But the cool thing: Wednesday I reached 1000 miles for 2011, according to my log.

Nice job jess! And wow, nice mileage skhill.
Kat, I have a feeling that you'll breathe better at altitude than you think you will, considering the humidity you've been training in.
Speaking of humidity ... it's been unreal here. I've been comparing the weather in Ohio and Florida, and it's actually hotter and more humid in Ohio. So I've been keeping it short and easy and trying to acclimate little by little.
A little under four on Tuesday - calibrating the footpod in a new velcro pouch I got that lets me transfer it between shoes without wearing out the clip. And this morning I went to the end of the block and back, a little over four - by the time I got back the heat index was already 101°.
I don't know if I'm even going to do the club ride tomorrow....

Oak,
Thanks for the encouragement. I am dreading getting up early for 18 miler tomorrow. Goal out on road by 6:30. Also dreading 18 miles. Really only did that twice when I trained for my marathon. Don't remember how it went. Little scared. But I figure if I walk I walk and it really matters time on my feet right now.

This morning was my worst race ever. It was 80 F and very humid, yuck. The first mile was alright, about 8:10, but then I wilted. I kept getting nauseous, walking until I felt better, then running again, over and over. Ended up doing the 5k in 29:25, more than 5 minutes off my PR. But I finished...
At least next week is supposed to be cooler...

Did my longest run ever today. 6.67 miles. Alone. Just me and my Sony. Okay, so I walked some of it. But it was nearly 80 degrees (26.7 C) at 7 a.m. with humidity levels at about the same. And it had twice the elevation gain of my previous distance record of 6.5 back in December.
So I'm not fast but at least I did it.
I hope to be in decent shape come the Du in 2 weeks.

Did an impromptu 5K tonite, basically walked up to the registration table and was running about 10 min later haha I guess the spontanaiety of it didn't give me time to really "think". It was a good run despite the rain, but if I'm running in La in July at night and in the rain isn't a bad way to do it haha Some of the "hill" training that I've been doing transferred, I felt more at ease at a faster pace than normal, however I did have some lower back pain and some knee pain, but I believe that all stems from my shoes being shot! :( definitely time for a new pair. I have 2wks before my Du so I'll start tapering soon, we've had a lot of rain the last few weeks which means i havent put in many bike miles but I think I'll be fine..
7rider, which Du are you doing?

7rider, which Du are you doing?
It's called "Du the 2 (http://www.creativetsolutions.com/DUthe2/about-duthe2.asp)" in Howard County, Maryland.
2 mile run, 26 mile bike, 4 mile run.
I did the course on Sunday - 2-26-2. (which meant two days in a row running for me....a first)
It was brutally hot.
Run 1 was okay. I went off with a friend of mine and we run at about the same pace (that is: slow). I told her ahead of time that it would be a "drop" ride - as I'm faster than her on the bike and I wanted to do the course at near-race pace. And drop her I did, but I also realized that, without a flat section of road, the course doesn't really lend itself to the TT bike (I think), so I'd like to try it again with my road bike and see how it goes.
I was off on Run2 when I saw my friend coming in on the bike.
Run 2 was awful. The hazy sun really heated up the pavement, and there really isn't any shade to speak of on the course. I watched 4 others pass me and leave me in their dust as I walked a bit, jogged a bit, and nursed my water bottle. I didn't do the full 4-mile run 2. I forgot my Camelbak bottle holder, so I was low on water. I'm certain I could have done the 4 miles with support (i.e., water stops) and more fluid. It would have been ugly and slow, but I'm pretty confident I can do it.

That's cool that you got to do a trial run of the course. I'm doing the B Quick Duathlon http://www.trifind.com/re_42767/BQuickDuathlon.html 2 mi run 18 mi bike 3.1mi run
weather permitting tomorrow I'll do a mock race of my own, not on the course though since I live about an hour away from where the race is being held. I did a mini-brick (10mi bike/2mi run) yesterday and it took me forever to get warmed up on the bike. The run however felt pretty good, even in my running shoes that in plan to replace tomorrow because they have way too many miles on em and are causing some pain.
Best wishes to ya! I'm sure you'll rock it!

Sorry I have not been around! I am checking back in. You ladies are doing a GREAT job in July.
I know it is hot everywhere, and Atlanta is no exception. I have been running plenty though. I am doing another Ironman in 6 weeks, so plenty of 8-10 milers. Will be bumping it up to the longer ones very soon.
Stay cool!

Monday I jogged easy for 2 miles and then did diagonals (http://www.runningwarehouse.com/LearningCenter/TrainKenyan.html) at the football field.
Yesterday my friend dragged me out for an 8x800's workout. Ugh! I have never felt so ill. We managed to do all 8 reps on pace. But the last 4 I could feel my head floating away like a balloon and my guts starting to burn. Too much humidity!
I think I'm ready to start running 3x a week again :)

I ran/hiked the 8 mile trail loop with my dog this weekend - she is so pooped even today that if I stop for a minute to talk to someone she lies down for a nap. I was getting my laptop out of the car and turned around to find her on the ground half asleep already. Needless to say, she wasn't excited about running the second half, so it was not as fast as I'd hoped, but I/we'll get faster as we go.
The trail is about 2 miles of flat to uphill, 3 miles of fairly steep climbing-scrambling where I'd run until my heart rate was too high and sometimes even hiking my heart rate would stay the same, and then 3 miles of gradual downhill (parts a little less than gradual). It was in the 90s, which is usually too warm for running. Stubbed my right pinky/second toe on a big rock, pinky toe is still a little sore (needs some ice). Same toes I stubbed before, need to work on picking my feet up on the trail.
As I posted on facebook, we also saw a bald bearded man in a wedding dress getting his picture taken. This is a dirt trail, he was about 3 miles in. I hope he carried the wedding dress.
I am doing the P90X strength training with my Ironman endurance training at this point. P90X forces me to focus on specific areas better than I do with just a regular strength training plan. I will cut it back after I am building more. It basically means I'm skipping the plyo/cardio days ATM, though I miss the plyo from when I was doing it a few weeks ago, and I think my running would benefit, so I'm kind of trying to find a place for it, but it might be too late.
Anyway... happy running :D

Hot buttered runs indeed!!!!
I went for my first trail run in a long time. It was very steamy. I had to walk most of the hills. There was a fire in my gut. Ugh. It's supposed to be a recovery week for me so I had no problem laying off and taking it easy ;)
