Because I bragged that I could change tires in the Can You Fix A Rear Flat? thread, I decided to go out and replace the old, torn up tires on my bike with brand new, shiny (really, there is a reflective strip), light weight tires.

That was when I discovered that my back rim is cracked in about six places. That puppy was ready to blow.

So, thanks, guys for lighting a fire under my tail and getting me out to do some bike maintenance.

I do wish, however, that I discovered the problem before I got the tire nicely seated.

sometimes the spirits send you a warning and then just laugh, laugh, laugh. I feel your pain but good thing you found out when you weren't on the bike in the middle of nowhere.

I'm impressed that you went out and did something mechanical! Good for you. My bike hasn't had any problems yet (only 6 months old), but I hope I'll be as motivated as you were when it comes time to actually do something with it.

I'm no heroine for doing my own wrenching, I'm the bike mechanic in this household. DH is a really nice guy but just doesn't get the concept of preventative maintenance.

The good news (really good news) in all of this is that I get a new wheelset out of the deal. As long as I had to have a new rear wheel built up, I decided to have a new front wheel built up as well. After 12,000 miles, I think it is probably time to get a new front braking surface.
