In January, I decided to try for a P12, which is twelve 100k rides, one a month for a year.
I completed my second today, and it was much easier than the freezing one I did in January.
I went to Hillsboro OR and did the snoozeville 100k permanent on the tandem with my husband. The weather was miraculously clement.
Never rained, light wind, temps between 48 and 58...
I saw too many roadkill animals for my liking, but other than that, all was good. We almost "timed out" when we decided to sit down for lunch at a sleepy restaurant. We sat for almost 30 minutes before we got our drinks... Realized we were running out of time for the next control and cancelled our order... ate our peanut butter sandwiches instead!!
after we made it to the next control (with 6 minutes to spare!!) we had a tailwind, and ended up finishing in less than 6 hours.

I have 10 more to go...

Where are the rest of the details? :D

Thank you! Sounds like a bunch of fun. And it's always nice to spend the day with your honey.

Glad you had PB for back up.

Veronica; 64 miles, 1540 feet of climb, 4:37 saddle time, 5:55 total time average speed was about 13.8.
We rode through farm country and a bit of suburbia. I was very excited when we rode by a new development under construction with a portapotty!! WoOHOOO! clean even!
no flats, no rashes, no nasty motor vehicles or even close calls.
There's nothing like a tailwind on a tandem on low rolling hills.

WOW- sounds like an incredible goal to shoot for (and a lot of fun at that!). Congrats on two down for the year! :D
Do you get to choose the route each time?
The closest permanents are a mere 400 miles away, so Ranndoneuring is out of the question for me. It sounds really interesting, tho- and I'd love to try it sometime.

You can do any 100k permanent, but so far, my DH has chosen the routes.
Last year we didn't have any 100k routes near my house and now we have a handful. People decided they wanted more in our neighborhood (my husband is one of them) so they created and submitted them.

Is this a club activity or something you decided to do on your own? I've never heard of P12 but that's pretty cool. Good for you.

Oh, fun!

Nothing like starting them out in the worst weather. The summer legs will be a breeze! :D

Way to go Mimi! I'm so jealous right now. I'm behind on my P12 because of my dang back. It's feeling a lot better and I even went for a little 15 mile ride on Saturday. Other than very tired legs my back felt okay. It's still twinging though.

Bikechick, the P12 is a new thing this year with the randonneurs. Not just my local club either. Did I mention you get a medal at the end?

Susan, I'm glad you got back on your bike. You'll be back in shape in no time!

Oakleaf, December is a really scary month for me. Sometimes there are entire weeks that I don't even want to go outside let alone ride for 6-7 hours!

Don't you have to buy the medal for yourself?

yeah, I guess you do have to pay for it, but it's less than 10 dollars including shipping.

It's not much, and seems like a nice thing to have around to remind you of all of the effort that went into it.

well yeah. Besides my husband has a wall of medals, maybe now I can finally earn one!

I still intend on joining you - but it is going to take me awhile...have to actually establish one in my area.

It might be easier to simply choose a 100k route that I will ride once a month and give myself a virtual medal at the end of the 12th - something really decadent like hot dark chocolate over real ice cream - I just couldn't tell my doctor nor check my blood sugar that day

hmmmm ;)

Surely Catrin, you can cheat on your diet once a year!

Oh I do, though not very often. I really have to justify THAT combination though - it is my most favorite decadent delight and if I wasn't very strict with it I wouldn't get anywhere :o Just because I've managed to ride myself into reversing the diabetes (2) doesn't mean that it cant come back :o

This sounds seriously fun, and a great way to stay riding year round. Now about the weather....

Nice job, Mimi! You rode very close to my house, but not quite by it (I live a little south of the Gaston check in). :)

A tailwind on the return trip was good luck indeed - usually it blows the opposite direction this time of year if the weather is clear!
