I've been on a search for a new road bike. I'm a beginner but i would like to get a sorta mid level bike instead of the entry level so i won't be tempted to upgrade soon. I test rode a trek 4.5, Cannondale Synapse 5 105 (didn't like it), and a Giant Avail Advanced 2. The fit for the Avail and the Trek are equal to me, i like the look of the Avail better, and the LBS are both nice, and the components are pretty much equal (both carbon frames, 105 shimano components). The avail is $200 cheaper and the shop that sells it also seems cheaper in price for accessories compared to the shop that sells the trek. I'm looking for a bike for long rides, comfort, and maybe get into some charity rides and races.

Any suggestions?

Giant, in my limited experience, is good bang-for-buck. I have a Giant, and love it.
Is the Trek the Madone 4.5? I'm guessing, but if you're going for comfort, the Avail is a more relaxed, upright geometry. The Madone is more aggressive, so if you want to race, that may enter your consideration.

Can you take them both out on test rides? That may make or break the deal. But reading your post, I think you've already decided. ;)

Yes, the trek is the madone 4.5. I test rode both and they both feel great. I will be making a purchase in about a month or so. Just looking for feedback on both bikes.

Wheels? (I know nothing about them, so hopefully someone else will chime in.) Gearing? How long were your test rides? Did you get some hills in?
What do you see yourself on?

They're both really nice bikes, and if they're both carbon and the component specs are the same, and they fit...it just comes down to what you're willing to spend. And yes, in this case, you're allowed to be swayed by silly things like color. :p
