My husband and I are converting a downstairs room into a fitness room and we're looking at equipment. He'd like to have a trainer with a computer that simulates, ie., part of Tour de France Stage. I don't have any model names in front of me right now but Bike Nashbar has a couple on sale. The reviews I've read point towards the lower priced models not being very good, the moderately priced models ($800 or so) are a good ride, and so on. None of the reviews say how long these trainers last, though, and I'm concerned that we could spend $800 on something that will break down after a few rides. Does anyone here have one of these/know anyone who has one to say whether or not they're worth it?

My preference is to get a rowing machine. I like the Concept II, but I've seen a combination recumbent bike/rowing machine that cost around $800. It gets good reviews. I know the Concept II tends to cost a little more, so I'm sure the quality of a combo wouldn't be as good. DH says he's more likely to use a recumbent bike than a rowing machine, thus the idea of going with the combo.

Any suggestions?

My husband and I have had a Computrainer for a few years now. I don't know if it does real video (it is probably too old) though you can do simulations, put in courses, build courses and it has a simulated video rides - you can pick the simulated scenery, desert or greenery..... It's been relatively trouble free. I broke cadence sensor once, but that was my fault... it came loose and caught on the pedal and I ripped it apart... My husband overheated it (we think?) once and I had to take it in, but they fixed it for free even though it was already a few years old. I do have the advantage of living about 3 miles away from Racermate's "headquarters" (its a small, small operation) though.

I would agree with Eden that Computrainers are great quality!

Elite also has a trainer where you can buy videos/DVD's of pro courses, and that may be something to consider as well. I do not have any experience with that particular trainer, but I will say that they are a reputable company and definitely one that I would consider.

Good luck in your search, sounds like lots of things to consider!

DH and I picked up a Concept II rower from Craigslist at a reasonable price. It's been great...when we have it in one piece and set up. I've actually used it more this year than in the past 3 years that we've had it. I like that it's full body and works different muscles vs. a bike. The last time I used my Nordic Track, I threw out my back on it () so right now, it's collecting dust and holding various vacuum parts on it.
We hope to ultimately convert a room in our basement into an exercise room. Some day. It will have the rowing machine, hopefully a spin bike, a treadmill, and room for us to set up the rollers. And free weights. And a flat panel t.v. on the wall so we can keep an eye on Coach Troy! I think the Nordic Track will go to Freecycle (http://www.freecycle.org/).

I think you should buy one of these:

My LBS has a demo set up and it's SWEET. I would train all day, every day if I had this.
