Hi, Im 16 and quite into cycling, in a couple of months (8 weeks) Im going to be cycling around lake taupo in a race. Its 160kms longs and i did it last year. My question is that my mother wants to do the ride as well this week. She only told me two days ago. I would like any help with training or anything really. My mums around 40 years old and aint really bike fit. I know she can do this but i would just like a little help. Weve just gotten a wind trainer for her/me to use while its raining/ dark.

Thanks, Marie

Sounds like a great ride. Do you get Bicycling Mag? In the September issue it had a program on training for a 100 miles basically the distance you will be doing in KMS. Its over 10 weeks but im sure if your Mum has some basic fitness you could adapt it to 8. If you dont have this mag Im sure there would be some programs on the web.

I hope you both have a great ride. Fill us in on all the details - we love to hear about everyones adventures especially mother and daughter ones. :)

Hey there!

I did the round taupo (well the first 80k's) last year and loved it! First, where in nz are you? If you're in the waikato you can first get your mom to drive the course and see what it's like. If not, make sure you tell her about the Waihahaahahhahah hill(that was so much fun..too funny) and the last one at 120k.(it gets everyone)

An even better idea is if she's never done 160k's before, why not be part of a relay team. Check out the round taupo site.

I must say the first 80k's aren't too bad. The hills are manageable if you take your time, have fun(the Tui signs are the best!!!) and drink tons of fluids...

I wish your mom tons of luck!!!!

C

ps-i'd join your mom & do the last 120k's but i've moved to perth.....

Well mum and me went out for a short short ride on the road today. It went well till mum couldnt unclip in time. Shes out for 2 weeks with her leg in a spilnt. So I have to get her back on as soon as we can. Shes pretty sore right now. We live in west auckland so we have heaps of hills to train on. :p

This is just a tiny set-back. You have 8 months to prepare for the ride. Here's (http://www.teamestrogen.com/articles/asa_century.asp) an article about training for your first century. There's lots of good info in it.

Hey there ZubZub... its awful news about your ma, but I am really pleased she is not attempting to do Lake Taupo with little training behind her. There are three big hills on that course, as you will know, and Hatepe (the last) breaks alot of people even though it is not the worst hill.

She really needs to start her training months before if she hasn't been on a bike much.

A friend of mine took 9 hours to complete it last year - thats 9 hours ion the bike - not including her rest-stops... she was completely exhausted and in alot of pain by the end of it, and purely because she had not prepared herself for it... the most she had ever ridden was about 50kms...

I would suggest get her training once she is well, get her used to clipping in and out of pedals (really bad luck she broke her leg unclipping - usually those kind've falls result in a bruised ego and not much more cause you are not travelling at speed).

Enter in a few fun-rides and you can do the longer distance and she can do the 40/50km rides... That way she'll get used to riding with packs, and the distances are manageable. You have plenty of time to work her up to a next years Taupo Challenge.

I've just turned 40 too... was going to be doing Taupo with two of my sons in a relay, but the Nationals are on in a few weeks and my partner and oldest son are training toward that...

I personally have no interest in doing full Round Taupo unless I can do it in about 5 1/2 hours... I reckon that is the absolute max I would want to spend on a bike.

You may find your mum is like me and prefers shorter distances (have my first "real" race - ie, not club or purely fun-ride - in 3 weeks - 50kms and my goal is to beat my sister-in-law...)

Hills will never be my strength but my power output is very very good, and i think time trialing is what I will continue to focus on. Is your mum aware of the different options available to her?
