I read about this idea on another forum...and reading about Mary's birthday ride has inspired me. I'm going to try to do 41 miles on my 41st birthday. Okay, probably it'll be the day after my birthday so I can do it on a weekend. Target date: Nov 5.

Today I went for my longest ride ever: 20 miles. I stopped at parks and refilled my water bottle and had a fig newton or 2. Even after the distance, I still (unbelievable to me) made it up my 2 nemesis hills at the very end of the ride. I enjoyed a glass of chocolate milk after my ride, and really felt great. Like I could've kept going (albeit at a very slow pace on my hybrid). Rear end and hands got a little sore - I'll have to find my old cycling gloves.

Any suggestions on how much mileage to increase on my weekend rides?

I think you should be comfortable increasing by five miles evey weekend. Actually, ten miles would probably be ok, as long as you are getting enough calories in while riding, but then you'd reach your goal too soon!

oh my, we don't want to go around exceeding any goals do we? ;) Is it okay if I do my ride a little late because the Cinderella is usualy right after my BD which means I can keep doing that till I'm 64.

ROFL - let me see, that would be 47 miles on my birthday, which is in December!! Can I "pick" a 50 mile ride and call it my birthday ride?? ;) Actually I'm seriously going to try to continue to ride on the weekend even through the winter: I bike commute, I run the dogs so I should be able to ride too right?? (will keep y'all posted)

I'm a dodo: congrats dr! It sounds like you had a great ride and yes ma'am...if you're riding that far and felt great you should be to do your age in miles by your birthday. The best rule of thumb I heard was to increase your miles by 10% each time but it seems most of us don't need no stinking rules - we seem to ride by what feels good.

I did 45 miles on my 45th. Of course that meant riding around the block a few times to make sure the odometer passed 45.

What a great idea!! Hmm, I turn 46 on 10/10. But my personal best is the 10 miles I did on Saturday, maybe I should stick with my goal of 25 miles for my birthday. But enough about me -

GO DOC GO!!! :D

You could always do the 26 miles on my birthday - you'd even have an extra month to train for it... :D Not so sure I want to do the 46 miles on your birthday though - that'd be a heck of a long mtb ride!
