Big Wheel (http://www.originalbigwheel.com/) (and the pretender Green Hornet) are what you are thinking about, I think. All plastic. My brother rode at least two of them completely out. They had the brake on the back wheel that you pulled up with your hand. Big holes in the rear wheel from all that skidding.

I also don't remember wearing a helmet riding mine :o... we used to take them down dirt hills and skid out at the bottom. You couldn't keep your feet on the pedals they were going so fast. We'd ride them far past the time we were too big to do so, and even instead of riding a real bike. I had 3 siblings and a neighborhood full of kids, so there was no shortage of big wheels (and parents yelling that you're going to hurt yourself on that thing!). ;)

Ha, that has a height capacity of 5'3" and I have short legs, so my 5'3.5" squatty body could probably ride that thing! :D

My brother had a Big Wheel that he would occasionally let me ride. I had a Schwinn Stingray with a banana seat and streamers. I never let him ride it.

Looks like inseam might be the limiting factor. It says it fits 15 - 22" inseam. I'm 5' and have a 25" inseam.

They are really cool looking bikes! The original seat and streamers have been replaced on mine, but it still looks pretty awesome.

CHILDREN! The proportions are different for kids, you know. They don't grow evenly. And some are quite freaky.

Most kids I know are more leg than torso, though...man, I would kill to have the legs I had at age 10. My kid is built like I was--legs for miles (and not an extra ounce of body fat). WTF happened to me?! Now I'm proportioned like a small gorilla. :p

I always wanted a Big Wheel and my parents wouldn't let any of us get one. No new-fangled plastic toys were allowed in our lives, so I would watch enviously as Jeff Hudgins up the street tore down the hill on his Big Wheel, wiping out in our yard every time.

I also wanted a Sit and Spin but that was also too new and plastic. I got my DD one when she was three years old and my parents watched her on it saying "what a great toy!" Grrrr. I wish they made THOSE for adults!

I was ten years too old for a Big Wheel. My brother, who is 11 years younger, had one. So did the kids I babysat. They used to scare me to death on that thing. My younger son had one; hmmm, wonder if that's what put the racing bug in his head?
I had a very small Schwinn, bought in 1963. Yes, I was ten when I learned to ride. I don't know the model, though. It was teal blue, had foot brakes, streamers, and one of those "back seats" where you could strap stuff onto, or have your best friend hop on and s/he could hang onto your waist while you gave him or her a ride :eek:. But, that wasn't my first bike. When I was 7, my parents bought me a German made, very teeny bike with training wheels. I remember some of the neighborhood boys making fun of it, it was so little. Alas, my total un-coordination prevented me from learning to ride it without training wheels.
I also had a black Raleigh, with the 3 speed Sturmey Archer shifter, a Brooks saddle and saddlebag, and one of those really bright big headlights. It was in my aunt's basement until 1977, when she sold it when she moved. If I only knew then what I know now. I rode that bike up some pretty humongous hills when I was a young teen. Until I moved to Florida and no one would be caught dead riding.

we bought them for our sons, they were noisy, the kids loved them. On them was a warning "not meant for anyone over 65 pound" That didn't stop my DH from riding it. What DID stop him was ending up in the orthopedic surgeon's office...
"so what did you do THIS time... ?"
"I was riding my little boy's big wheel down a steep hill"

Well they have a bunch of these in different colors on ebay right now, and it says it will adjust for someone up to 6'3" and hold up to 250lbs.
