The Berkeley Humane Society went up in flames last week, gutting the Cat area, laundry , kitchen and admin areas. 12-15 cats died in the fire, several others and the dogs were rescued. While sad to hear of the cats and the damage I did hear that it was a pitt who alerted the human in the building so she was able to get out along with the other animals.

The building though was a near total loss. Today only the following stores are having sales. In most locations 20% of all purchases go to a fund to rebuild.

All out of towners wherever you are - several of the stores on the list are donating online sales monies too, so please shop for your pet, or your friends pets, or pets you may get in the future, or pets on your Christmas/Chanukah/Solstice/Kwanza list or....

It resonates with me because my now aging but still energetic shelter mutt alerted me that the gas was on in the house long ago. We'd been cooking, turned the burner off but not all the way. If Mae (my mutt) had not kept barking and alerted us judging from the smell of gas in the house at 2am or so I am sure we would not be having this conversation on TE right now. :o
