As I ride recumbent on the road, I used a non-cycling short yesterday, a fitness short that I picked up. Fairly loose fitting and comfortable.

After the ride I noticed that my gluts were more sore than usual. Is the tightness of a cycling short for support of the muscles?

Thanks!

Lisa

If the knowledgeable women on this forum answer yes, try rowing shorts. These things are da bomb on a bent (or in my case, under loose shorts on a bent). they have a very thin modesty pad and that's it.

the above link has shorts that aren't cheap, but their quality is higher than other's I've tried.

hmmmm.... I remember when I was touring, people told me to take off my cycling shorts asap or risk a yeast infection. I wonder if these rowing shorts (they said they were of the wicking variety) would help decrease that? Does anyone know? (I can repost this somewhere else if this is too much of a hijack)...

TsPoet,

Thanks so much! It's hard to tell if all of the shorts have a pad or not, I'll give them a call.

Well, technically cycling shorts are compression shorts, but I don't know how much support they really provide (they do smooth out my fat like spanx  )

I know a company came out with running tights that claimed to improve performance because of the specialized muscle support--and I thought that was C@#$ for an amateur athlete.

I have several pair. They do, sort of. But it isn't anything like a bike shorts. it's more for their butts rubbing back and forth while they row - which I think is better for a bent rider, and it is very very thin. It is also not made out of the thick chamois, so shouldn't be a problem for yeast or anything.
Good luck.

This seems like a very likely answer to me. And, the fact that no one else has chimed in supports that (pun intended). If cycling shorts did do something for muscle support, people would be all over that action.

I guess I could ride in my Spanx :D
