This just showed up in Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090904/ap_en_mo/as_people_russell_crowe):

An Australian newspaper mocked Russell Crowe for smoking and shoveling down a fatty meal during a recent bike ride, so the notoriously salty actor set out to prove he is still in gladiator shape — by challenging the paper's gossip columnist to a duel by bicycle.

Crowe, who has been photographed looking slimmer in recent months, was apparently none too pleased by a column published in Sydney's The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday entitled "Smokes and fatty foods the fitness regime for Rusty." The paper mocked Crowe after he was photographed pausing during a recent bike ride with his personal trainer to puff on a cigarette and chow down on three tacos and a soft drink.

In a story published Friday, the paper said Crowe's spokesman called up gossip columnist Annette Sharp the next day and said, "Get on your bike. Russell wants you to go riding with him. Are you ready to die?"

Sharp accepted the challenge and the pair met a dawn for a 12-mile (20-kilometer) ride through the city. Video of the race shows Sharp struggling to keep up while Crowe zooms along unfazed. At one point, Sharp fell off her bike.

Still, Crowe gave Sharp some credit, telling her she was a better biker than Australian director Baz Luhrmann. "You're twice the man Baz is," he said.

Crowe's manager Grant Vandenberg had no comment. "I think everything's been said in the paper," he said.

Love. It.

We need more bike duels, fewer lawsuits!

I love it. Bikes! At dawn!

and then on the appointed morning...

... a van from a LBS rolls up, unloads matching bikes for the duel, with all the formal ceremony that some duels were held in the days of yore.

I dunno if he has to do this to avoid the Paparazzi but ..... Russell puhleeeze, he's weaving, doesn't signal, at one point he's on the wrong side of the road, and Russell please wear something lighter or brighter. :o

Here's video of the actual bike duel: http://player.video.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/#ysKJE5c8DHh_xt4k_FDHQabUPex7rjAX

I couldn't watch the whole thing because I'm at work, but it seems like there was more talking than riding. But at least Russell's wearing a light colored vest.

Of course watching that video makes me want to publish disparaging remarks about his taco habit... I think I could probably kick his butt ;):D

Hey! Tacos made right aren't bad!

Longboard Louie's halibut and cabbage tacos.

La Rosa's carne asada tacos with pico de gallo.

What the heck is wrong with those? Nothing fried, no ranch sauce and bacon or iceberg lettuce.

Try some traditional-style tacos. Those things Taco Bell makes aren't tacos.

California Tortilla (http://californiatortilla.com/menu/tacos/) has surprisingly good tacos, for a chain. I've had a few good rides fueled by their fish tacos.

But I still love Taco H-e-l-l, too :D

Oy, baseball caps under helmets: your opinions here, please.  ;)

You can tell I don't like them. To me nothing should go under a helmet other than a cycling beanie. :)

Oh around here a baseball helmet is down right normal. We have people with those hiker hats - the ones with the huge brims - under their helmets. The capper (pun intended) was when I saw a woman with a huge hiker hat (had a big wind come up she would have been been air born it was that big) and one those full face sun visors all crammed under a helmet that perched on her head like a undersized beanie.

But if Russell Crowe wants to challenge me to a dual, I'm up for it! I'll just, ah, draft off of him - yeah, that's it, draft off of him - and enjoy the view. Then I'll use the energy I saved to kick his butt. :D
