I've got the spreadsheet set (really just copying over from the last one). So let me know if you are in, and what your goal is, and we all weigh in this Friday (or over the weekend, whatever works best for you, no matters to me as far as the spreadsheet goes). I'll post the link at the end of the week.

This 8-week period actually takes us to July 3rd, but I like the 8 weeks so I figured it was Ok that it is really a May, June and a couple days of July challenge. :)

Can I join too? I've gained far too much this winter and need to get back in shape. Now that the Crohns is under control again I'm back to getting excercise so that should help. My goal for the challenge will be to reach 80kg. Hopefully this will keep me accountable and motivated....

Of course all are welcome!! And you can definitely let me know the goal once you weigh in for the first week. I'll likely be doing the same. :) And I convert the numbers to pounds rather than kg just so that the tally for the total lost is consistent. I can also put the line for anyone that would rather track in kg on the chart, below the box that tallys pounds lost. Just let me know what you would prefer.

Tucker Cat is not going to join this time. But he's much happier now that he's svelter and boy is he faster. Watch out for those fingers!

I am in again. My starting weight is 150 and goal is 143. I'm hoping to get down to 15 - 18% body fat before my half Ironman in August. That's a final weight of 137 - 143.

ok.... I'm at 160.4 (Still) I'm not sure what I want to do for my goal weight... it's alwasy so troubling. I'm seriously just not sure what my body can handle since my weight has been so crazy (up and down) for the last 10 years. If i have to put a weight down.. I guess 150.... But is there any way to just not put a final weight down there?

OK folks, here is the link to the spreadsheet. Some names from last month are still on there. I'll take them off if I hear from folks that they aren't joining us this go around, or after the first couple of weeks if I don't hear anything from them. No worries! The people who've already said they are in for this 8 weeks are highlighted in column B.

Congrats Veronica! I know how hard you are working from following your HIM training thread. Great job!

I had a "finally" moment yesterday as well. I MADE MY WEIGHT WATCHERS GOAL!! Actually, I exceeded it. :D Today I am 129 pounds (WW goal was 130). I'm thrilled.

36 pounds ago, I had no idea what my body would look like at this weight, so I just picked 130 as a reasonable goal for my height. Now that I'm here, I think I'm going to make myself one final goal. 125 pounds by 6/28/2009, the day of the Pacific Crest Triathlon, 7 weeks from now. I hoping to lose the last 5-6 pounds of belly/thigh fat and gain a few pounds of muscle.

After that, I hope I have the strength to throw away my scale.

I'm feeling strangely optomistic about the next two months. Gotta love it!

I feel really positive today too. I think it's the rays of sunshine streaming across my desk. I'm sitting in this warm pool of light, and loving it!

After soooooo many months of cold and rain, the start of nice weather has me feeling very energetic. I'm hoping for this wonderful sunshine to continue on into tomorrow, for the 1st tri of the season. My swim heat starts 24 hours and 5 minutes from now! WooHoo!

I wasn't going to do the challenge this time since I have yet to make any progress in the downward direction in the past. But Susan and Veronica's successes (well done, ladies!) have changed my mind. Thanks for the inspiration!

The last couple weeks have been more stressful than usual. That, coupled with being out of town for five days trying to eat the best of poor restaurant food and having no bike to ride, has me up at 139   .

My goal is always 129 each challenge. I don't really see that happening in two months, but I hope to see some change for the good this time. I want to toss my scale, too.

Good luck to everyone.

I wasn't going to join either. I've gained and lost the same 5 pounds for the past year and can't seem to break through. But I'm feeling optimistic after reading the threads and ready to try again. Starting weight: 143. Goal weight: 139.

05-08-2009, 03:30 PM
I'm not officially joining this challenge, but will definitely keep reading, as this is one of the most inspirational threads on here!

That being said, I'm trying something different for myself: I switched my scale into kilograms! I can still check my progress, but I find that I don't get as freaked out about the ACTUAL NUMBER that it's reading out... mostly because I can't do the mental math that early in the morning. Now, it really DOES feel like "just a number" and not my entire self-worth.

(And everyone who's not in the US, please don't tell me; this ignorance is bliss to me!)

gnat, what an interesting tactic, I like it!!

And I do understand the concept of gaining and losing the same dang 5 lbs. It is frustrating. But I too am gaining inspiration from some of the folks here and am hopeful that this 8-week period is a turnaround for me.

I was hoping today was the start of that, I was going to try my first ride with a local bike group here. But sparing too many details, I had to have some tests today and let's just say I understand now why my sister says she usually can't leave the house the day she has her CTs to with contrast. Man this would not have been good to have happen while on a bike and while wearing lycra. :P

So I weighed myself at the gym last night. 66.5kg, aiming for 64kg. I don't mind if you'd rather turn that into pounds, but a line for those of us working in kg would be nice because then we wouldn't all look like we're obsessive or just plain nerdy having goal weights that go into decimal places... :p

My initial goal is to do daily food journal to track what I'm eating. And no more chips and no more ice cream (I just can't control myself with those foods).

Hello!

Well - this is my first official weigh-in post - wish it was better but down @ a half pound (my scale is really old - the kind where the line goes through the number & if you tip forward or backward you can make the line go to a higher number or down to a more pleasing lower number :D)

I have an injury that has stopped me from riding or running but it is healing & I'm hoping to get back on the road next week - that should help with the calorie burn.

Thanks for doing the spreadsheet!!

Down to 179.0!!

Although this is exciting to be down 3 pounds, I cannot take a lot of credit. I had to have some bone graft surgery done on my gum due to a blob of cement left there when my dental implant/crown was done (2 years ago). So I have not been able to eat normally for the last 2 weeks. Not a recommended weight loss method!

Down to 222 for me. I've had to cut way back to keep losing at all thanks to an injured knee (no exercise for me!). For some odd reason, I lose weight when I cut breakfast. I can cut the calories elsewhere to no effect. Odd - and very much contrary to conventional wisdom, I know.

129.5.

Having reached my WW goal, I am now on "maintenance" with WW. This moves my daily points from 18 to 21 (which adds 21 points per week total). Ironically, 21 points per day is where I started in November when I weighed 165 pounds. It really is amazing how I could lose weight at 21 points when I weighed 165, but be on maintenance at 21 points weighing 129.

Less body mass requires fewer calories to maintain. I know that. But it's still vaguely depressing somehow. :o

Weighing in a day early as I will be getting up before I go to bed tomorrow to catch the early morning train and start the journey from the end of the world to CA (or at least that's how it seems when you have to get up at 4am, catch the 5:30 train, spend 3.5 hrs on the train just to get to the airport then three flights to get to CA).

Anyway, not much movement this week. Stacks of exams to mark and meetings to rush to kept me too busy and rushed to cycle much. But my weight is ever so slightly down from last week: 211.8. I'll take whatver small steps I get. And next week while in CA I'm sure mom (Duck-on-Wheels) will keep me on track, then the week after is ALC when i'll at least get enough exercise. Hopefully when I get back the numbers will be better...

I am hanging in at 151. I have been eating more veggies and fruit. I just wonder if it has to do with my Dr changing my thyroid medication. She decreased back in October. I gained about 5-6 pounds within a month or 2 and have not been able to drop it. I have spoken to her about this but she disagrees. Oh well. I will keep trying with eating more veggies and increasing my time on my bike. Good luck everyone.

129.5 - no change. I'm rather enjoying eating in maintenance on WW :D, though if actually want to drop the last few pounds I'd better quit eating the extr afew points I've been allotted.

I'm heading to Pendleton for ~225 miles of riding in 3 days. The weather is predicted to be PERFECT, so I'm really looking forward to it!

I've decided to not try to record for WW this weekend, since I'll be out of the house for 3 solid days. Besides no home cooking, I'll also not have access to my computer and I don't feel like keeping track of it all on paper while I'm riding. I'll instead use all of the strategies I've learned over the past 6 months to eat sensibly, listen to my body and trust myself to make good choices all weekend.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend!

The sad thing is that over the last 7 days, I haven't worked out at all. I don't think I've done that in probably 10 or 12 yrs. Working two jobs this week, plus added responsibilites at the main one. I agree with Reesha - go with how you FEEL in your clothing.

I'm only 4 pounds lighter now than I was 6 weeks ago. BUT, I've lost an inch off my hips, 1/2 inch off my waist and 1/2 inch off my bust in those 6 weeks. All that exercising YOU'RE doing is making you fitter and stronger too, and building more muscle. If the scale never budges, but your body changes shape as a result of all that fitness, you should celebrate it! So yes, using the "zipper method" of determining progress towards a goal is just as valid (perhaps more so!) than using a number goal.

Keep your chin up. :) You're a mileage rock star!

I thought I'd take a minute and report in on how I did with this goal.

I think I'd give myself a B-.

Today is my WW weigh day, and the scale tells me I'm exactly the same weight as last week. So that pulled up the grade.

Pulling *down* the grade is how I feel I handled myself at the food stops on the ride. I didn't make *terrible* choices, but I also think I could have made better ones. For example, at the "Western" themed food stop - I should have stopped at one s'more, but they were so yummy that I had two! At the "OSU Tailgate Party" themed food stop, I made mostly good choices: a baked potato, half of a grilled burger (gave Jeff the other half), some fruit... But then they also had 5 different kinds of cookies to choose from. I couldn't decide, so..... I'm unhappy to report that all 5 flavors were fantastically delicious, especially the peanut butter cookie. :o

Clearly, 225 miles and ~15,000 feet of climbing burned off the excesses, but I still wish I could have exercised a little more self control. You know - two cookies instead of five! :D

Jones
05-27-2009, 12:24 PM
I think you are being too hard on yourself. You didn't gain any weight, you made good or okay choices most of the time and now that you are back home you will continue to make good choices. Imho I think that is what we are all trying to do. If I had made good or okay choices most of the time I wouldn't be 184 lbs but I made more bad choices thus the need for me to diet now. My goal is to be able to eat whatever I want sometimes and eat healthy most of the time and sometimes I am just gonna wanna eat 5 different cookies. Life and food would be pretty boring without good and bad choices.

Well said! That is probably why I won't ever be a size 6 again, but life is short, and there ARE good cookies out there! This is why I exercise... ok, it's only ONE of the reasons, but it's a big one!

PEDAL WENCH: if you want, I can sneak in and loosen that dress a little -- then you can zip it up and feel FANTASTIC!

I thought of that! I bought it for my brother's wedding last year. Couldn't zip it then either and got into it in time. So, I know I can do it. But, if not, maybe just a little bit around the bust...:o

I learned that there's a huge difference between junior and real-woman sizes. This dress is 4 sizes bigger than my jeans - I don't get it. Apparently, juniors don't have ribs. Or are they like baby's heads - they're still soft and squishy.

I've been introduced to the indoor trainer by D*H and can do 10 miles in about an hour and fifteen minutes. I've decided I really prefer the lake route, where I can coast and still earn miles, but this sure beats not getting any exercise at all because I couldn't carve out a three-hour block of time to get to the lake, get changed, ride for two hours, and drive home.

I guess I forgot to weigh in last week. Freudian slip, most likely.

I'm at 138 this morning and have decided to not weigh in again until the end of the challenge. I get too frustrated by the lack of movement in the right direction when it seems I'm doing what I should be to lose. Will revisit my food intake and choices yet again.

Judging by the way my watch and ring magically grow larger and smaller, I retain lots of water with no apparent pattern to the retention. I'm sure my little fluctuations in weigh are simply water weight gain/loss.

No change here. Considering I spent 4 days with my folks this week celebrating my dad's birthday, and I ate and drank way too much rich food and sweets and didn't exercise at all while I was there, I'm happy I didn't gain.

185.2 I ate everything in sight this week. I couldn't stop myself. Last night I ate a huge steak, drank really good wine and split two desserts with my friend and she didn't eat her fair share. So now I am back from my vacation away from dieting and will be dieting again this week.

Raining here now so my chance at squeezing in a ride is slim. I have to go post 'yard sale' signs all over the place near my friends house. Three of us do a yard sale each year and then the money we raise goes to charity. Last year and this one, it will all go to my ride in August, which is good because my teammates will collect things for us to sell then we donate in each of their names. Win win for everyone. I was hoping I could ride before the signage, but not with this rain! Hopefully tomorrow after transporting all the things I've collected down to the location of the sale. Life keeps getting in my way of riding! :)

I'm not weighing until tomorrow, but I had to post today anyway. I'm pretty sure I'll see a gain, but it's for a good reason. I am FINALLY getting back into a real exercise routine. I'm achy and sore, so I feel good. BUT, this means that it'll be a couple of weeks before the scale starts to move again. In fact, it'll probably go up. Today, my jeans were extra tight even though I have been riding and eating well this week. That's just the way my body works.

I've been sloth-like for so long that getting back on the exercise bandwagon is going to cost me in the short term. That's ok as long as I'm mentally prepared (and it's why I'm posting now). I know that in about 4 to 5 weeks, I'll start reaping the rewards in terms of scale weight and clothing fit. In the meantime, I get to feel better both physically and mentally while I frantically search for stretchy things to wear to get me over this 'hump'!

136.2 again...

My century bike ride is in two week. I am finding it too hard to be in "Calorie Deficit Mode" while training for this event.

Therefore, for the next two weeks, I am planning to maintain my weight, not lose weight. So, 136.2 is good! :)

After the century ride, I will get back to being serious about losing these last few pounds.

Hi there ... (waves)

Any chance I can join in for the remaining few weeks? :)

After a couple of months of enforced lethargitude, I'm ready to get rolling again. Well, slowly, and with the stoopid back brace still my constant companion for perhaps another month. :p

I won't be road riding again until well after I get the brace off, but I'm doing short bits of time on the trainer.

And my physical therapist has me doing lots of exercises for my right arm and shoulder. Who knows, my arms might be stronger than before when all is said and done. Not that that's saying an awful lot.

Anyhow, I've also been using the "I can eat this cuz I'm healing" excuse early and often, so naturally I've gained a few pounds in the interim. Eh, not as bad as it could have been, I suppose.

I took the plunge and joined Weight Watchers online (got a slightly reduced rate through my insurance so I figured why not).

Starting weight is back up to 160. grrr. Goal weight for the end of June is 155. Small steps, grasshopper.

I'm right with you... I have a little of surgery weight that I"m trying to get over.... but after all the crap (sorry) that I went through, I am much stronger and could never go on a 2hour ride if I wanted to before. You will be great! keep up the hard work!!!! It truely pays off. I also recently joined WW online and I love it. I"ve lost 4 pounds this past month.... I feel as though it's slow sometimes, but ya know what?!?! It's been staying off and that's a lifestyle change, which is what's it's all about. I'm at your same weight... usually between 158-160... trying to get down to 145 overall.....

12" of rain between Fridays killed a full week of riding and I didn't reduce calories enough. I work out three days a week with a personal trainer. Monday is leg day and if I do any aerobic activity, it's in the morning. My weight training is focusing on building muscle endurance so I don't want my legs tired before the session. Wed. is upper body and I usually run to the gym. It's a 4 mile route. My husband picks me up after training. Thursday is plyometrics and boxing day. I have run to the gym before this, but boy am I dead after.

My diet is full of fresh fruit and vegetables, and today I've really gone bonkers for fruit.

I've already had:
1 small banana (@ breakfast)
1/2 a medium orange (also @ breakfast)
1 medium apple (moring snack)
1 cup blueberries (with a big salad at lunch)
1/4 of a large cantaloupe (afternoon snack)

I love fruit because its alot of volume for very low WW points (all of the above only cost me 5 WW points).

I pre-cut/rinse enough fruit and salad fixings for 2-3 days and bring it to work in plastic containers. When I feel hungry, I bop into the kitchen and have a healthy snack! Having fruit handy and ready to eat keep me from making poor choices.

I tested out two weeks on a raw diet earlier this year and ate mostly raw fruit (along with raw veggies and nuts too). I was literally eating well over 2000 calories a day but I lost weight like crazy! 8 lbs over the two weeks. Even if it was water weight-- there was a noticeable difference in how everything fit. I also felt really sparklingly healthy. I stopped when I started biking heavily again-- thought maybe fish might be good to eat post rides!

I no longer worry about fruit as carb additions. :D

I agree Susan, keeping fruit around ready to eat totally helps me from eating a pile of crap. Well... not total crap. It's just easier and faster and healthier than a bowl of popcorn.

Carbs are our bodies' primary fuel. I try to get 65% or so of my daily caloric intake from carbohydrates. I'm not a believer in low carb diets, though I recognize that they work for others.

I'm picky about my fruit too. Especially the right firmness. I like crunchy apples, crisp grapes, etc.

I loooooove nuts(especially roasted & salted), but eat them only in moderation. Full of good fats, but fats nonetheless. It's very easy for me to have too many and consume a lot of additional unnecessary calories.

My favorite nuts are unroasted raw almonds. I don't think I ever eat more than a quarter cup or so. I just think they're so much more fragrant than when they're roasted! I think it's important to be conscious of where your carbohydrates are coming from, rather than eliminating as many of them as possible. I know that my body balloons when I have to many simple, refined carbohydrates. When I have them, I try to make sure they're from fruit or whole grains, but mostly from fruit.

Veronica
06-08-2009, 04:23 PM
It wasn't until I really began watching my carb intake that I got leaner. But I was a real sugar junkie - still am. I just keep it under control a lot better. I'm doing roughly 50% carbs, 30% protein, 20% fat. I actually keep track of the grams, so it doesn't quite work out to that - 173 carbs, 100 protein, 40 fat.

Since I really like sugar, I've been limiting the fruit and trying to get more whole grain stuff in. I find it a little more satisfying. I still don't have it quite right - 100 proteins are hard and I like my fats!

Veronica

Reesha
06-08-2009, 04:28 PM
I find it really, really hard to cut the fats out of my diet, especially when I use straight olive oil on my salad instead of dressing. I should eat more protein, but it's expensive :(

I don't know... my fat intake was really high on the raw diet as well but they were all really healthy fats-- olive oil, avocados, nuts. I still lost plenty of weight.

Possegal, can you eat seeds? I've recently started carrying a little Glad container of raw sunflower seeds. They're very satisfying and are a MUFA, so they're one of the healthy fats, and all that.

I'm three days off wheat as of tonight. D*H eliminated wheat and dairy from his diet in February and lost thirty pounds in two months. He was riding a lot, too, and had just gotten an iPhone with the calorie tracking app, so he has become a bit obsessive about tracking everything he eats and all the exercise. He did a 42-mile ride this afternoon and probably lost five pounds or something ridiculous. It's just falling off him. He's lost two whole bikes' worth of weight. His average speed has gone from 18mph to 20+.

Me, well, I'm enjoying long rides every weekend, and I've noticed that I can keep my heartrate higher longer without feeling like I'm about to have a heart attack. My speed hasn't increased much lately, though. I'm on a mountain bike - a 12-year-old Palomar GT. Lavender with white trim. I also have a Schwinn gear bag on the front in which I carry a couple of pounds' worth of tools, a spare tube, my cell phone, a small first aid kit, my arm warmers, and some tissues. Oh, and my keys. Not exactly aero.

So really, off wheat, exercising quite a bit, the weight should start falling off any second now, right? I want to get under 240 before we go to Hawaii on Saturday.

Somebody please say yes.

I kept track of my cabs/protein/fat for a short while a few months ago, when I was feeling a little fatigued. It was eye-opening and I'm glad I did it. I discovered I wasn't getting enough protein. And at that point, I *did* start to make an effort to get a little more. I like to get .6-.7 grams per pound of body weight, which puts me at 77-90 grams protein per day, or around 300-350 cals per day of protein. I wasn't always getting that, partially because I sometimes do not eat alot of animal protein. (I'm allergic to cow's milk). So, I've started eating more turkey breast in particular, and have goat yogurt almost every day. Along with beans and tofu, that's usually enough. Also, I never miss an opportunity for sushi, as GLC can attest to. :D Finally, I joined a beef/pork CSA. I didn't eat beef or pork for about 11 years, but added it back in late last summer. We only eat it once a week, sometimes twice, as I try to limit my saturated fat intake.

I think the most important thing of all is to find something that fits your lifestyle, while being healthy & maintaining a healthy body weight. If it's too hard to keep track of, or if you resent having to do it, it'll feel like work. And we all work enough already - who needs more? ;) I want food to be something that is pleasurable and satisfying, not something that I have to divide into "good" and "bad".
